Thermal diffusion of envelope solitons on anharmonic atomic chains

We study the motion of envelope solitons on anharmonic atomic chains in the presence of dissipation and thermal fluctuations. We consider the continuum limit of the discrete system and apply an adiabatic perturbation theory which yields a system of stochastic integro-differential equations for the collective variables of the ansatz for the perturbed envelope soliton. We derive the Fokker-Planck equation of this system and search for a statistically equivalent system of Langevin equations, which shares the same Fokker-Planck equation. We undertake an analytical analysis of the Langevin system and derive an expression for the variance of the soliton position Var[x _s ] which predicts a stronger than linear time dependence of Var[x _s ] (superdiffusion). We compare these results with simulations for the discrete system and find they agree well. Influences of local polymer-solvent π-π-interaction on dynamics of phenyl ring rotation and its role on photophysics of conjugated polymer

In this report, the role of local polymer-solvent π-π-interaction on rotational dynamics of phenyl rings of poly[2-methoxy-5-(2′-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) is examined by utilizing nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. We have found that an aromatic solvent can couple strongly with the phenyl rings via favorable local π-π-interaction, causing a restriction of the ring rotation. The dynamic process takes place at much faster rate in a non-aromatic solvent. NMR line shape analysis indicates the existence of two side chain configurations with relatively long life-time in toluene and pyridine while a single time-averaged configuration is detected in chloroform and tetrahydrofuran. Addition of chloroform or cyclohexane to a solution of MEH-PPV in toluene is accompanied by an increase of the rotational dynamics. This indicates that the expansion or collapse of main chain upon varying solvent quality play a minor role on the rotational dynamics. The relationship between the dynamics of ring rotation and photophysics of MEH-PPV in solution is discussed.     

Determination of low dose concentration profiles in solids by means of (n,p) and (n, α) reactions

The isotopes³He,⁶Li,⁷Be and¹⁰B exhibit extremely large cross sections, between 1 and 48 kilobarn, for (n, p) or (n, α) reactions with thermal neutrons. Together with now available extracted thermal neutron fluxes of 10⁽ n·cm⁻²·sec⁻¹ or more, these reactions present a highly sensitive method of detecting the mentioned light elements in any heavy matrix material. Through the experimentally determined energy losses of the emitted protons or α-particles, also well resolved depth profiles can be obtained, as demonstrated here for some relevant examples from semiconductor and fusion technology.     

Synthesis of 5-alkylidene-2,5-dihydropyrrol-2-ones and their ring-transformation into 5,6-dihydrobenzo[h]chromones, 5,6,7,8-tetrahydrochromones and pyran-4-ones

Acid-mediated ring-transformations of 5-alkylidene-2,5-dihydropyrrol-2-ones, available by cyclization of 1,3-diketone dianions with bis(imidoyl) dichlorides of oxalic acid, resulted in formation of functionalized pyran-4-ones, such as 5,6-dihydrobenzo[h]chromones and 5,6,7,8-tetrahydrochromones.
