The objective of this study was to determine the incidence of vocal problems in young choir singers and to correlate vocal problems with demographic and behavioral information. A questionnaire addressing vocal habits and hygiene was offered to 571 young choir singers, up to 25 years of age, who sing at least weekly; 129 (22.6%) responded. More than one-half of the respondents had experienced vocal difficulty, particularly older adolescents. Detrimental behaviors and circumstances surveyed were not reflective of the incidence of vocal difficulty, except for morning hoarseness, chronic fatigue, insomnia, and female gender after puberty. Voice care professionals should be aware that self-reported voice difficulties are common among young choral singers, especially postpubescent girls, and children with symptoms consistent with reflux (morning hoarseness) and emotional stress (insomnia). Laryngologists should communicate with choral conductors and singing teachers to enhance early identification and treatment of children with voice complaints, and to develop choral educational strategies that help decrease their incidence. 相似文献

A fully automatic radioxenon sampler/analyzer (ARSA) has been developed and demonstrated for the collection and quantitative
measurement of the four xenon radionuclides,131mXe(11.9 d),133mXe(2.2 d),133Xe(5.2 d), and135Xe(9.1 hr), in the atmosphere. These radionuclides are important signatures in monitoring for compliance to a Comprehensive
Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). Activity ratios of these radionuclides permit source attribution. Xenon, continuously and automatically
separated from the atmosphere, is automatically analyzed by electron-photon coincidence spectrometry providing a lower limit
of detection of about 100 μBq/m3. The demonstrated detection limit is about 100 times better than achievable with reported laboratory-based procedures for

Using concentration measurements based on high performance liquid chromatography, we have investigated the kinetics of reaction between single-stranded oligonucleotides containing a d(GpG) sequence, i.e., d(GG), d(TGG), d(TTGG), and d(CTGGCTCA), and the platinum complexes cis-[Pt(NH(3))(2)(H(2)O)(2)](2+) (1) and [Pt(NH(3))(3)(H(2)O)](2+) (2). The rate constants for the substitution of one aqua ligand of platinum in 1 or 2 by each guanine of the oligonucleotides were individually measured, as well as, for 1, those for the subsequent conversion of the monoadducts to the diadduct. For the platination of d(GG) and d(TGG), the rate constants are similar for the 5'- and 3'-guanines. The longer oligonucleotides d(TTGG) and d(CTGGCTCA) are platinated slightly faster on the 5'-G than on the 3'-G. 2 shows a similar slight preference for the 5'-guanine, but it reacts by a factor of 4-10 more slowly than 1. For both complexes, the platination rate constants increase with increasing oligonucleotide length. Platination of the 5'-G by 1 is 1 order of magnitude faster on d(CTGGCTCA) than on d(GG). Concerning the chelation step giving the GG diadduct of 1, the longer the oligonucleotide, the larger is the ratio between the rates of the cyclization of the 3'- and 5'-monoadducts k(3)(')(c) and k(5)(')(c): k(3)(')(c)/k(5)(')(c) equals 1.4 for d(GG) and 3.3 for d(CTGGCTCA). 相似文献

The beta-delayed two-proton decay of theT
z
=–5/2 nuclide39Ti has been observed. The39Sc isobaric analog state has been calculated to lie at 8.82 MeV using the measured two-proton sum energy of 4750±40 keV for its decay to the37K ground state. Chloroacetaldehyde reacts with viral M13mp18 single and double stranded DNA to form the highly fluorescent adducts, etheno-AMP and etheno-CMP. Absorbance and fluorescence spectroscopy can be used to monitor and characterize these reactions. Both single and double stranded DNA showed increases in the absorbance following reaction with the aldehyde. The fluorescence also increased in these two groups and continued to rise with increasing time of incubation until a point of saturation was reached. The fluorescence of the double stranded moiety was considerably enhanced following reaction with the aldehyde while that of the single stranded population was not, making this method appropriate for the separation of small quantities of the two populations of DNA. 相似文献
