Antimicrobial activity on the copolymers of 2,4‐dichlorophenyl methacrylate with methyl methacrylate: Synthesis and characterization

Copolymers of monomers 2,4‐dichlorophenyl methacrylate (2,4‐DMA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) were synthesized with different monomer feed ratios using toluene as a solvent and 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator at 70 °C. The copolymers were characterized by IR‐spectroscopy, and copolymer composition was determined with UV‐spectroscopy. The linearization method of Fineman–Ross was employed to obtain the monomer reactivity ratios. The molecular weights and polydispersity indexes were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Thermogravimetric analyses of polymers were carried out in nitrogen atmosphere. Isoperthiocyanic acid (3-amino-5-thione-l, 2, 4-dithiazole) as a new reagent for the selective detection of nitrite ion

Summary A new, simple, and selective test is described for the detection of nitrite ion with isoperthiocyanic acid (I) as the reagent. The test is based on the reaction of a 5% solution ofI with the nitrite ion solution, a deep orange precipitate being formed. Conversely, the test can be used in the identification ofI itself. Presumably, the coloured product is 3-hydroxy-5-thione-1, 2, 4-dithiazole, formed by the action of nitrous acid (producedin situ by the action of sulphuric acid and nitrite) on the 3-amino group ofI. The limit of detection is 300g of NO₂ ^– in a drop (0.05 ml). Most anions (including IO₃ ^–) do not interfere. Only I^–, thiourea, and hydrogen peroxide interfere; S₂O₃ ^2– interferes only when present in large amounts.

Zusammenfassung Ein neuer, einfacher und selektiver Nachweis von Nitrit mit Isoperthio cyansäure (I) wurde beschrieben. Er beruht auf der Umsetzung einer 5% igen Lösung von I mit Nitritlösung, wobei ein tief orange gefärbter Niederschlag entsteht. Umgekehrt kann die Reaktion auch zum Nachweis von I dienen. Vermutlich handelt es sich bei dem gefarbten Produkt um 3-Hydroxy-5-thion-1, 2, 4-dithiazol, das durch Einwirkung der salpetrigen Säure auf die 3-Aminogruppe von I entsteht. Die Erfassungsgrenze betragt 300g NO₂ ^–im Tropfen (0,05 ml). Die meisten Anionen (inklusive JO₃ ^–) stören nicht. Nur J^–, Thioharnstoff und H₂O₂ stören; Thiosulfat stört nur in großen Mengen.

     

INTERACTION OF VIOLOGEN DYES WITH CHROMATOPHORES AND REACTION-CENTER PREPARATIONS FROM RHODOSPIRILLUM RUBRUM

Abstract —Various low-potential viologen dyes enhance light-induced absorption changes in the near-infrared region (ΔA870) in chromatophore preparations from Rhodospirillum rubrum in the presence of dichlorophenol indophenol and a high concentration of ascorbate (DCPIP + asc). An increase in ΔA870 was also observed in large reaction-center preparations from R. rubrum with viologens in the presence of ascorbate. Our results indicate that E'₀, of the primary electron acceptor X may be as low as -0.37 V, as suggested recently by P. A. Loach (1973, personal communication).     

Identification of isothiocyanates (Mustard oils) and liquid primary amines via the formation of 1-substituted 2-tetrazoline-5-thione

The oscillometric method is suggested for the determination of alkali salts of organic acids in non-aqueous media. In the titrations of organic sodium and potassium salts the influence of water content and dielectric constant of non-aqueous solvents on the slopes of the titration curves was investigated. Errors obtained were in the range of±0.6 to 1.5%.     

Purification of recombinant green fluorescent protein by three-phase partitioning

The technique of three-phase partitioning (TPP) was used to purify the green fluorescent protein (GFP) in a single step. TPP uses a combination of ammonium sulphate and tert-butanol to precipitate proteins from their crude extracts. In the first round of TPP with 20% ammonium sulphate saturation at the ratio of crude to tert-butanol 1:1 (v/v), most of the GFP remains in the lower aqueous phase. When subjected to a second round of TPP with 60% ammonium sulphate saturation at the ratio of crude to tert-butanol 1:2 (v/v) gives 78% recovery of GFP with a 20-fold purification. The sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic (SDS-PAGE) analysis of purified preparation shows single band. The fluorescence excitation and emission spectra agreed with values reported in literature.     

Reaction between copper(I)-thiourea and bismuth(III)-thiourea complexes in presence of iodide. New spot-tests for copper(II) and bismuth(III)

New and very simple spot tests are described for the detection of Bi(III), Cu(II) and I(-) ions with limits of detection of 3, 8, and 75 mug/0.05 ml respectively. Tests are also described for such combinations as Bi(III) + I(-); Bi(III) + Cu(II); and Bi(III) + Cu(II) + I(-). All the tests are based on the formation of an orange or red-orange precipitate of bismuth(III)-copper(I)-iodide-thiourea complex, for which the formula [Bi(tu)(3)I(3).Cu(tu)(3)I] (where tu = thiourea) is proposed. This complex is produced in various ways by the interaction of Bi(III), Cu(II), and I(-) ions with thiourea. Most cations and anions do not interfere, but Tl(I), Cs(I), SO(2-)(3), S(2)O(2-)(3), EDTA, and oxidizing ions such as NO(-)(2), IO(-)(3), IO(-)(4), BrO(-)(3), and MnO(-)(4) do. The complex hexakis(thioureato)sulphatomonoaquodicopper(I) [Cu(2)(tu)(6)SO(4).H(2)O] is proposed as a new spot-test reagent for Bi(III) and I(-) ions, although the sensitivity for the latter is poor.     

An unusual conformation of gabapentin (Gpn) in Pyr‐Gpn‐NH‐NH‐Pyr stabilized by weak interactions

The crystal structure of N‐[(1‐{2‐oxo‐2‐[2‐(pyrazin‐2‐ylcarbonyl)hydrazin‐1‐yl]ethyl}cyclohexyl)methyl]pyrazine‐2‐carboxamide monohydrate (Pyr‐Gpn‐NN‐NH‐Pyr·H₂O), C₁₉H₂₃N₇O₃·H₂O, reveals an unusual trans–gauche (tg⁻) conformation for the gabapentin (Gpn) residue around the C^γ—C^β (θ₁) and C^β—C^α (θ₂) bonds. The molecular conformation is stabilized by intramolecular N—H...N hydrogen bonds and weak C—H...O interactions. The packing of the molecules in the crystal lattice shows a network of strong N—H...O and O—H...O hydrogen bonds together with weak C—H...O and π–π inteactions.     

Synthesis and antimicrobial evaluation of novel 3-(arylideneamino)-3a,8a-dihydroxy-1,3,3a,8a-tetrahydroindeno[1,2-d]imidazole-2,8-diones and their 2-thioxo analogues

The preparation of some novel 3-(arylideneamino)-3a,8a-dihydroxy-1,3,3a,8a-tetrahydroindeno[1,2-d]imidazole-2,8-diones 8(i–xiv) and 3-(arylideneamino)-3a,8a-dihydroxy-2-thioxo-1,3,3a,8a-tetrahydroindeno[1,2-d]imidazol-8(2H)-ones 9(i–xiv) have been reported through one-pot catalyst-free reaction of aldehydes, semicarbazide hydrochloride/thiosemicarbazide with ninhydrin. All the synthesized compounds have been screened for antimicrobial activity and some of them were observed to possess broad spectrum antibacterial potential as well as significant antagonistic potential against fungal pathogens.
