Exact solutions of solid-liquid phase-change heat transfer when subjected to convective boundary conditions

A closed-form expression is presented to find the location of solid-liquid interface motion in convection-dominated solidification and melting problems. In this regard, the solutions are expressed in terms of the generalized representations of error functions,E (u, v) andF (u, v), which are useful to heat-conduction problems with convective-type boundary conditions. It is demonstrated that for constant surface temperature, the interface solution reduces to the classical Neumann solution.     

Structure determination of bioactive galloyl derivatives by NMR spectroscopy

The investigation of the chemical constituents of Symplocos racemosa Roxb led to the isolation of two new glycosides, symcomoside A (1) and symcomoside B (2), together with one known glycoside, tortoside C (3), which is reported for the first time from this plant. The structures of the new compounds were determined by 1D and 2D homonuclear and heteronuclear NMR spectroscopy, from chemical evidence and by comparison with published data for closely related compounds. Symcomoside B (2) showed potent inhibitory activity against alpha-glucosidase in a concentration-dependent fashion with an IC50 value of 0.733 +/- 0.033 mM whereas symcomoside A (1) showed very weak inhibitory activity against alpha-glucosidase (9.90% in 0.70 mM).     

NMR assay of ephedrine hydrochloride in tablets

A rapid NMR method is described for the determination of ephedrine hydrochloride. The relative standard deviations are 1.5% and 1.2% for the pure drug and tablets respectively. The results for synthetic mixtures and tablets are comparable to those obtained by the B.P. 1973 method. In addition, the NMR spectrum furnishes a specific means of identification of ephedrine.     

The autoxidation of 2-(2-aminophenyl)-3- methylindole

Fischer indolisation of 2-aminophenyl ethyl ketone phenylhydrazone using glacial acetic acid saturated with hydrogen chloride as catalyst affords 3-methylindolo(l′:2′-3:4)2-methylquinazoline and 2-(2-aminophenyl)-3-methylindole. The latter compound is autoxidised to 2-(2-amino-phenyl)-3-hydroxy-3-methyl-3H-indole, a reaction which is shown to be dependent upon the presence of the primary amino group at the 2-position of the 2-phenyl substituent and which is much slower than the corresponding autoxidation of 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-3-methylindole to 3-hydroxy-2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-3-methyl-3H-indole previously reported.Nitration of isopropyl phenyl ketone occurs preferentially at the ortho- rather than the meta- positions of the benzene nucleus.     

Phosphodiesterase‐Inhibiting Glycosides from Symplocos racemosa

Phytochemical investigation of Symplocos racemosa resulted in the isolation of two new glycosides, symploracemoside ( 1 ) and symplomoside ( 2 ), which are structurally related to the reported benzoylsalireposide ( 3 ) and salireposide ( 4 ). The structure elucidation of the isolated compounds was based primarily on 1D‐ and 2D‐NMR analysis, including COSY, NOESY, HMQC, and HMBC correlations. These glycosides showed inhibitory activity against snake‐venom phosphodiesterase I.

Ionic Liquids Supported on Metal‐Organic Frameworks: Remarkable Adsorbents for Adsorptive Desulfurization

Acidic ionic‐liquids (IL) supported on metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been shown to be beneficial for adsorptive desulfurization. A remarkable improvement in the adsorption capacity (ca. 71%) was observed in for ILs supported on MIL‐101 compared with virgin MIL‐101. The improved adsorptive performance might be explained by the acid–base interactions between the acidic ionic liquid and basic benzothiophene (BT). Moreover, from this study, it can be suggested that porous MOFs, supported with ionic liquids, may introduce a new class of highly porous adsorbents for the efficient adsorption of various compounds.
