Two sterically equivalent series of phenoxy-terminated 5-alkoxy-2-(4-alkoxyphenyl)pyrimidine liquid crystals were synthesised, and their mesogenic properties were characterised by polarised optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The phenoxy end-group causes a significant increase in melting point and inhibits – at least partially – the mesomorphism of these materials relative to the parent isomers; in most cases, the broad enantiotropic SmC phase formed by the parent isomers is suppressed by the addition of the phenoxy end-group. However, detailed analyses by small-angle X-ray scattering and monodomain 2D X-ray scattering suggest that these compounds form a SmA phase with a partially intercalated bilayer structure in which the phenoxy end-groups are nanosegregated. Such an intercalated bilayer structure might enable the tuning of smectogenic properties by appropriate substitution of the phenoxy end-groups.  相似文献

First-principles molecular dynamics (FPMD) simulations and static quantum chemical (QC) calculations are used to evaluate the tensile strengths, σ(c), of interfaces consisting of (0001) surfaces of α-Al(2)O(3) separated by small organic species. The evaluation of σ(c) with FPMD was achieved by performing simulations in which the simulation cell was extending in a direction normal to the fracture plane until rupture of the interface occurred. The static QC calculations employed an approach which treated fracture of the interface as a competition between uniform extension of the simulation cell and crack formation at the rupture site, which is analogous to that used in the construction of universal binding energy relationships. The results showed that the static QC calculations accurately reproduced the FPMD simulations with respect to tensile strength and the cell extension at which rupture occurred, provided that the rupture site employed in the static calculations matched the site at which rupture occurred during the FPMD simulations. A simple strategy for identifying the rupture site, even in complex systems containing many potential rupture sites, is proposed. Overall, the work extends the calculation of tensile strengths with static QC methods to highly heterogeneous interfaces, thus providing a computationally efficient alternative to demanding FPMD simulations for this purpose.  相似文献

We present a general purpose QM-MM-MD engine (DYNGA) designed to test alternative hybrid Hamiltonians geared towards the treatment of problems of interest in structural biology including the use of experimental data constraints. In this first presentation we use DYNGA to explore the behaviour of a traditional QM-MM approach in the treatment of the water—water interaction. We find the potential energy hypersurface for the water dimer computed with the HF 4–31G*/TIP3P hybrid Hamiltonian tends to be too flat. We also explore the effect of using traditional QM-MM techniques on proton wires and conclude there is a need for improvement, possibly addressed by using polarizable force fields.  相似文献

Abstract We analyze the efficiency of the international management of the Bay of Biscay anchovy. While a sharing agreement between France and Spain has been in place since 1992, the fish stock collapsed in 2005 and the fishery closed from 2005 to spring 2010. We consider differences in production technologies between both countries and calibrate our model using data from 1987 to 2009. Our results suggest two sources of rent dissipation under the existing sharing agreement: inefficient quota allocation and production inefficiencies due to inflexible national regulations. We discuss several alternatives to improve management.  相似文献

A newly developed interface coupling a CHN combustion device (elemental analyser 'EA') to an isotope ratio mass spectrometer is described and evaluated. The purpose of the device is to extend the dynamic range of delta(13)C and delta(15)N analysis from less than 2 orders of magnitude to more than 3 orders of magnitude. Carbon isotope ratio measurements of atropine as a model compound have been performed analysing between 1 μg to 5 mg C with acceptable to excellent precision (0.6 to 0.06 per thousand, delta-notation). The correction due to the blank signal is critical for sample amounts smaller than 4 μg C. The maximum sample weight is determined by the combustion capacity of the EA. Larger sample amounts are measured using dilution of a small part of the EA effluent with helium. The dilution mechanism works virtually free of isotope fractionation. Assigning effective atomic charges that properly reproduce the electrostatic fields of molecules is a crucial step in the construction of accurate interatomic potentials. We propose a new approach to calculate these charges, which as previous approaches are, is based on the idea of charge equilibration. However, we only allow charge to flow between covalently bonded neighbors by using the concept of so-called split charges. The semiempirical fit parameters in our approach do not only reflect atomic properties (electronegativity and atomic hardness) but also bond-dependent properties. The new method contains two popular but hitherto disjunct approaches as limiting cases. We apply our methodology to a set of molecules containing the elements silicon, carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen. Effective charges derived from electrostatic potential surfaces can be predicted more than twice as accurately as with previous works, at the expense of one additional fit parameter per bond type controlling the polarizability between two bonded atoms. Additional bond-type parameters can be introduced, but barely improve the results. An increase in accuracy of only 30% over existing techniques is achieved when predicting Mulliken charges. However, this could be improved with additional bond-type parameters.  相似文献
