Cross-axis synchronous flow-through coil planet centrifuge (type XLL). I. Design of the apparatus and studies on retention of stationary phase

The fourth prototype holds a pair of column holders in the lateral position at 15 cm from the center of the rotary shaft horizontally mounted on the rotary frame at 7.6 cm from the central axis of the apparatus. Using short coils of 2.6 mm I.D. PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) tubing with 7.6 cm and 24 cm helical diameters, retention of the stationary phase was measured in ten pairs of two-phase solvent systems under various experimental conditions. Satisfactory retention was obtained by choosing proper combinations of three factors, i.e., the direction of planetary motion, head-tail elution mode, and inward-outward elution mode. The polar butanol solvent systems showed excellent retention from 65 to 80% in the 7.6 cm helical diameter left-handed coil.     

Gas chromatographic determination of residual hydrazine and morpholine in boiler feed water and steam condensates

Summary Hydrazine, an oxygen scavenger in boiler water, was derivatised to the corresponding acetone azine and determined at the ng ml^–1 level by gas chromatography. Morpholine, a corrosion inhibitor used in steam boilers, was estimated either directly (if >2.0 g ml^–1) or by quantitative preconcentration (0.1 ng – 2.0 g ml^–1). To obtain symmetrical peaks for these amines, the column packing was coated with KOH. Use of a nitrogen-specific detector improved accuracy of estimation of hydrazine and morpholine, giving a RSD of 1.9–3.6%. Chromatographic analysis of these amines in boiler feed water and steam condensate samples collected from boilers servicing a petroleum refinery is described. Environmental safety regulations calls for monitoring of hydrazine and the methods developed can easily be adapted for this purpose.     

Reatarding effect of nitrogen ylide for the polymerization of N-vinyl pyrrolidone

-Picolinium-p-chlorophenacylide (-PCFY) acts as a retarder for polymerization of N-vinyl pyrrolidone. The polymerization runs were carried out at 60°C using benzene as an inert solvent. The kinetic equation for the present system may be written asR _p [-PCPY]^–1.0 [AIBN]^0.66[N-VP]^1.0. The value of overall energy of activation for polymerization in presence and absence of-PCPY was computed as 44.0 and 42.3 kJ mol^–1, respectively. The inverse relationship ofR _p and¯M _v with-PCPY suggests that-PCPY acts as a polymerization retarder. The retarding effect is also evidenced by higher initiator exponent value and higher value of energy of activation in presence of ylide. A mechanism is also proposed in which polymer propagating chain combines with one ylide component to give resonance stabilized radical.     

Synthesis and characterization of biocompatible poly (L-lactide) using zinc (II) salen complex

Abstract

A biocompatible zinc (II) complex based on a tetradentate N,N,O,O-type salen ligand was synthesized, characterized and used for the solvent-free ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of L-lactide in bulk at 180?°C to prepare high molecular weight poly(L-lactide) (M_n : 82,600?Da; M_w : 140,000?Da; PDI: 1.70). Poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) was characterized using FTIR, ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, GPC, TGA, DSC, WAXD, and MALDI-ToF. Kinetic measurement was carried out and first-order behavior to monomer was observed. The k _app was found as 6?±?0.001?×?10^?4?s^?1. The biocompatibility of the PLLA was confirmed by in vitro cytotoxicity against NIH/3T3 fibroblast cell line and can be used in biomedical applications.
