The influence of selected metals and halogens on the electronic system of benzoic acid

The influence of halogens and metals on the electronic system of the aromatic ring in lithium, sodium and potassium complexes with p-halogenobenzoic acids has been investigated by means of ¹³C and ¹H NMR, IR and Raman spectroscopy and semi-empirical calculations. It has been shown that ionic potentials and electronegativities of halogens and metals are the main factors responsible for perturbations of the electronic charge distribution in the ring.     

Enhancement of a 24.77-nm line emitted by the plasma of a boron nitride capillary discharge irradiated by a high-intensity ultrashort laser pulse

Investigations of plasma produced by a boron nitride capillary discharge irradiated with a guided 20-TW Ti: sapphire laser pulse at a peak intensity of 4 x 10(18) W/cm2 are presented. The guided laser radiation in the plasma channel generated He-like ions that, subject to suitable plasma temperature, recombined into Li-like nitrogen ions. Intense radiation at a wavelength of 24.77 nm was observed, indicating possible lasing at the 3d(5/2) - 2p(3/2) transition in Li-like nitrogen.     

A primer of substitution tilings of the Euclidean plane

This paper is intended to provide an introduction to the theory of substitution tilings. For our purposes, tiling substitution rules are divided into two broad classes: geometric and combinatorial. Geometric substitution tilings include self-similar tilings such as the well-known Penrose tilings; for this class there is a substantial body of research in the literature. Combinatorial substitutions are just beginning to be examined, and some of what we present here is new. We give numerous examples, mention selected major results, discuss connections between the two classes of substitutions, include current research perspectives and questions, and provide an extensive bibliography. Although the author attempts to represent the field as a whole, the paper is not an exhaustive survey, and she apologizes for any important omissions.     

Pulse shape measurement by a non-collinear third-order correlation technique

A third-order correlator suitable for detailed shape measurements of picosecond laser pulses has been developed. The working principle in both the single shot and the scanning mode is based on detection of the phase-matched difference frequency non-collinear generated signal in a non-linear crystal. This third-order OPA correlator was applied for the characterization of the specifically shaped picosecond laser pulses from the MBI CPA Nd: glass laser system.     

Sensor information monotonicity in disambiguation protocols

Previous work has considered the problem of swiftly traversing a marked traversal-medium where the marks represent probabilities that associated local regions are traversable, further supposing that the traverser is equipped with a dynamic capability to disambiguate these regions en route. In practice, however, the marks are given by a noisy sensor, and are only estimates of the respective probabilities of traversability. In this paper, we investigate the performance of disambiguation protocols that utilize such sensor readings. In particular, we investigate the difference in performance when a disambiguation protocol employs various sensors ranked by their estimation quality. We demonstrate that a superior sensor can yield superior traversal performance—so called Sensor Information Monotonicity. In so doing, we provide to the decision-maker the wherewithal to quantitatively assess the advantage of a superior (and presumably more expensive) sensor in light of the associated improvement in performance.     

The UV photolysis of azidomethane and 3-azidopropyne in nitrogen matrices

IR spectra of azidomethane, 3-azidopropyne and 3-azido-1-d-propyne in nitrogen matrices have been recorded during UV photolysis. In contrast to the simple photolytic reaction of matrix isolated azidomethane (azidomethane → methylenimine → HCN + HNC), 3-azidopropyne apparently displays more complex reaction paths.     

The acid-catalysed reaction of thiols with alkyl 2,3-dideoxy-glyc-2-enopyranosides or glycals

The acid-catalysed (HCl or SnCl₄) reaction of alkyl 2,3 dideoxy-glyc-2-enopyranosides or 3,4,6-tri-O-acetyl-D-glycals with thiols leads to mixtures of alkyl 2,3-dideoxy-1-thio-glyc-2-enopyranosides and 3-S-alkyl-3-thioglycals. Under equilibrium conditions the latter are the preponderant products of the reaction. Cross experiments have confirmed the intermediacy of the allylic carbocation in the reaction. A rationalization of the substitution reactions of 1,2- and 2,3-unsaturated sugars based on HSAB principle has been proposed.
