Some remarks concerning C-spaces

We comment on the definition of C-spaces in [D.F. Addis, J.H. Gresham, A class of infinite-dimensional spaces. Part I: Dimension theory and Alexandroff's Problem, Fund. Math. 101 (1978) 195-205] and [W.E. Haver, A covering property for metric spaces, in: Topology Conference at Virginia Polytechnic Institute 1973, in: Lecture Notes in Math., vol. 375, 1974, pp. 108-113]. Furthermore we introduce two types of ‘finite’ C-spaces one of which gives an internal characterization of all spaces having a metrizable compactification satisfying property C. We also introduce a transfinite dimension function for those finite C-spaces. Several questions arise that are related to Alexandrov's problem.

An attempt on the calculation of relativistic potential energy curves: Noble gas difluorides

Total energy SCF calculations were performed for noble gas difluorides in a relativistic procedure and compared with analogous non-relativistic calculations. The discrete variational method with numerical basis functions was used. Rather smooth potential energy curves could be obtained. The theoretical Kr-F and Xe-F bond distances were calculated to be 3.5 a.u. and 3.6 a.u. which should be compared with the experimental values of 3.54 a.u. and 3.7 a.u. Although the dissociation energies are off by a factor of about five it was found that ArF₂ may be a stable molecule. Theoretical ionization energies for the outer levels reproduce the experimental values for KrF₂ and XeF₂ to within 2 eV.     

On the covariance of the level sizes in random recursive trees

In this paper we study the covariance structure of the number of nodes k and l steps away from the root in random recursive trees. We give an analytic expression valid for all k, l and tree sizes N. The fraction of nodes k steps away from the root is a random probability distribution in k. The expression for the covariances allows us to show that the total variation distance between this (random) probability distribution and its mean converges in probability to zero. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Calculation of photoionization cross sections of small metal clusters

In this paper we present photoionization cross sections of the Cu and Al dimers and tetramers. The local spin density method is applied to calculate the electronic structure and the ground state potential. The cross sections are calculated using the continuum multiple scattering method, and a basic analysis of the photoionization process is given within the independent particle picture.     

Synthesis of enantiomeric-pure cyclohexenyl nucleoside building blocks for oligonucleotide synthesis

Lipases were used for the resolution of (±) (4aR, 7R, 8aS)-2-phenyl-4a,7,8,8a-tetrahydro-4H-1,3-benzodioxine. This separation was carried out on preparative scale and used for the synthesis of eight phosphoramidites of cyclohexenyl nucleosides (d- and l-series).     

The effect of high electric fields on the structure and dielectric properties of the B2 phase

Dielectric studies are presented of a banana-shaped compound that exhibits the antiferroelectric B₂ phase. Upon application and subsequent removal of strong electric fields the textures and dielectric properties of the phase drastically change. Most notable is the huge increase of the low frequency permittivity. This behaviour would suggest the induction of ferroelectricity by the electric field.
