Metastable phase in the quantum Hall ferromagnet

Time-dependent capacitance measurements reveal an unstable phase of electrons in gallium arsenide quantum well that occurs when two Landau levels with opposite-spin are brought close to degeneracy by applying a gate voltage. This phase emerges below a critical temperature and displays a peculiar non-equilibrium dynamical evolution. The relaxation dynamics is found to follow a stretched-exponential behaviour and correlates with hysteresis loops observed by sweeping the magnetic field. These experiments indicate that metastable randomly distributed magnetic domains with peculiar excitations are involved in the relaxation process in a way that is equivalently tunable by a change in gate voltage or temperature.     

Selection theorems,based on generalized variation and oscillation

In this paper we prove selection theorems for everywhere and almost everywhere convergent subsequences, based on the notion of uniformly limited oscillation, ofA, Λ-oscillation and ofA, Λ-variation, whereA is a system of intervals and Λ a sequence of reals. By this, we generalize and strengthen the selection theorems of Schrader (for oscillation) and of Waterman (for Λ-variation).     

Small-angle neutron-scattering study of concentrated nonionic-amphiphile solutions

The structure of aqueous solutions of two polyoxyethylene non-ionic amphiphiles, C₁₀E₅ and C₈E₄, is studied by small-angle neutron-scattering along isothermal paths crossing the isotropic single-phase region from 0% to 100% amphiphile volume fractions. The scattered intensityI(k) shows a peak at a valuek _m , which grows monotonically as the amphiphile volume fraction increases. The interpretation of the scattering data lead to the following conclusion: as increases the micellar structure becomes less and less sharp, but some orientational correlations between neighboring amphiphile molecules are preserved even in the pure amphiphile phase.     

HPTLC separation of aromatic α-amino acid enantiomers on a new histidine-based stationary phase using ligand exchange

Summary A new chiral ligand exchange selector for hydrophobic stationary phase modification has been synthesized by selective alkylation of L-histidine at the pyrrolic nitrogen atom in its imidazolic ring. Its performance was then tested on RP-HPTLC plates treated with copper acetate. Significant selectivity towards aromatic amino acid enantiomers, was observed. Chromatographic retention data were compared to available thermodynamic complex formation parameters for the relevant model systems in aqueous solution.Stationary and mobile phase effects on retention were studied by using different RP-HPTLC plates and various binary aqueous solvent mixtures.Optimized separation conditions for aromatic amino acid sample class are given.     

Chemometric studies in the Lagoon of Venice, Italy. Annual evolution of sulphur species and relationship to biogeochemical cycles in lagoon water

During the period March 1997-March 1998 dimethyl sulphide (DMS), dimethylsulphoniopropionate (DMSP) and carbon disulphide (CS2) were determined weekly in the water of the Lagoon of Venice, Italy (at three stations located in the Giudecca Canal, the San Secondo Canal and the Rio di San Nicolò). At the same time, the following hydrological and biological variables were also measured: tide height, temperature, transmittance, fluorescence, pH, salinity, chlorinity, sulphate, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, silicate, chlorophyll a, phaeopigments, phytoplankton (abundance and biomass). Principal component analysis (PCA), applied as a dimension reduction tool, made it possible to summarize multivariate information in a small number of components, which highlighted the relationships between the temporal evolutions of the sulphur compounds with hydrological and biological variables in the seasonal biogeochemical cycle of the lagoon. In particular the overall temporal cycle, which begins with the development of biological activity in late winter and spring, followed by the predominance of degradation processes during the late summer and the remineralization of nutrients in autumn, is clearly described in the plane of the first two principal components, together with the interrelationships between all the relevant variables.
