The alpha-helix folds more rapidly at the C-terminus than at the N-terminus

The helix-coil dynamics of different sections of an alpha-helical model peptide were observed separately by nanosecond temperature jump experiments with IR detection on a series of isotopically labeled peptides. The results show that the helix-coil dynamics of the alpha-helical C-terminus are faster than those of the N-terminus.     

Efficient asymmetric epoxidation of alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones using a soluble triblock polyethylene glycol-polyamino acid catalyst

[reaction: see text]. Polyethylene glycol (PEG)-bound poly-L-leucine acts as a THF-soluble catalyst for the Juliá-Colonna asymmetric epoxidation of enones. Excellent enantioselectivities may be obtained even with short chain length polyleucine. FT-IR investigations have determined that the catalytically active polyleucine components of these copolymers have an alpha-helical structure.     

A comparative investigation of the fatty acid compositions of the seeds of a number of lines of a genetic collection of Gossypium hirsutum

A comparative analysis has been made of the amounts of lipids and their fatty-acid compositions in the seeds of the lines of agenetic collection of cotton plants of the speciesGossypium hirsutum and their hybrids and the variety Tashkent-1. 2-(1-Azulyl)ethyl tosylate methylene scrambling in the gas phase. Similarities to solution chemistry

The methylene groups in 2-(1-azulyl)ethyl tosylate are largely scrambled prior to formation of fragment ions in the mass spectrometer. This process also occurs in the 3-nitro analog, where it is dependent on sample residence time in the source and independent of electron energy. It could not be observed with the isomeric 6-substituted tosylates, the 1-substituted acetates or alcohols, or with 2-(p-anisyl)ethyl tosylate. Scrambling occurs in the neutral molecule prior to ionization and a mechanism involving absorption onto the metal surface and formation of a complexed ethylenazulonium ion is suggested.     

DNA-templated Ag nanocluster formation

The high affinity of Ag+ for DNA bases has enabled creation of short oligonucleotide-encapsulated Ag nanoclusters without formation of large nanoparticles. Time-dependent formation of cluster sizes ranging from Ag1 to Ag4/oligonucleotide were observed with strong, characteristic electronic transitions between 400 and 600 nm. The slow nanocluster formation kinetics enables observation of specific aqueous nanocluster absorptions that evolve over a period of 12 h. Induced circular dichroism bands confirm that the nanoclusters are associated with the chiral ss-DNA template. Fluorescence, absorption, mass, and NMR spectra all indicate that multiple species are present, but that their creation is both nucleotide- and time-dependent.     

ADSORPTION OF SURFACE-ACTIVE AGENTS FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTION: HYDROPHOBIC SUBSTRATES∗

Isotherms for the adsorption of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate, sodium POE (4) nonyl phenol sulfate, and POE (25) nonyl phenol, on the hydrophobic crystalline herbicides atrazine and cyanazine were determined. Anionic surfactants were measured at 5°, 25°, and 50° C; the nonionic surfactant at 25° C only. Low degrees of surface coverage were observed; in only one case (atra-zine/NaDBS) was monolayer coverage approached. On the other hand, adsorption was accompanied by a significant increase in negative zeta potential. Although DLVO calculations suggest that this adsorption should lead to stable aggregates, these are of such size that gravitational effects overpower the DLVO terms.     

Structure of valinomycin/fatty acid langmuir-blodgett films

We report on the structure of monolayer and multilayer Langmuir-Blodgett films of mixtures of arachidic acid and the ionophore valinomycin. Compressibility measurements on the floating layers and low angle x-ray diffraction experiments with multilayers indicate the possible miscibility of the two components at low concentrations of the ionophore. However, it would appear that the arachidic acid and valinomycin are insoluble in one another over most of the composition range.

用强子–弦级联模型JPCIAE及相应的Monte Carlo事例产生器研究相对论性核–核碰撞中带电粒子多重数的赝快度密度对能量和中心度的依赖关系.无需另调任何模型参数的条件下,此模型可以同时较好地描述相对论性pp实验数据及PHOBOS和PHENIX实验组的Au+Au实验数据.本文指出:因〈N_part〉并非严格定义的物理量,致使实验上和理论上确定〈N_part〉有一定任意性,从而使得每参加者核子对的带电粒子赝快度密度随着〈N_part〉的增加可能逐渐增大,也可能逐渐减小,因此用它来区分粒子产生机制是欠妥的.     

Imaging sustained dissipative patterns in the metabolism of individual living cells

Theoretical studies have predicted spatiotemporal organization of cell metabolism. Using a rapidly gated CCD camera, we demonstrate for the first time sustained traveling waves of NAD(P)H autofluorescence and protons in individual morphologically polarized living cells. Chemical concentration fronts moved in the direction of cell orientation, thus correlating dissipative structures with cell shape.
