A new measurement of the neutrino asymmetry parameter B in neutron decay, the angular correlation between neutron spin and antineutrino momentum, is presented. The result, B=0.9802(50), confirms earlier measurements but features considerably smaller corrections. Bacterial Ser/Thr kinases modulate a wide number of cellular processes. In Bacillus subtilis , the Ser/Thr kinase PrkC has been shown to induce germination of bacterial spores in response to DAP-type but not Lys-type cell wall muropeptides. Muropeptides are a clear molecular signal that growing conditions are promising, since they are produced during cell wall peptidoglycan remodeling associated with cell growth and division of neighboring bacteria. However, whether muropeptides are able to bind the protein physically and how the extracellular region is able to distinguish the two types of muropeptides remains unclear. Here we tackled the important question of how the extracellular region of PrkC (EC-PrkC) senses muropeptides. By coupling NMR techniques and protein mutagenesis, we exploited the structural requirements necessary for recognition and binding and proved that muropeptides physically bind to EC-PrkC through DAP-moiety-mediated interactions with an arginine residue, Arg500, belonging to the protein C-terminal PASTA domain. Notably, mutation of this arginine completely suppresses muropeptide binding. Our data provide the first molecular clues into the mechanism of sensing of muropeptides by PrkC. 相似文献

In this article we compare the classical monopole mass filter of von Zahn and the monopole mass filter with a hyperbolic V-shaped electrode. The experimental results and those of computer simulation for both mass spectrometers are presented. We show that the replacement of a conventional 90 degrees V-shaped electrode by an electrode with a hyperbolic profile substantially improves the peak shape of any given mass, and increases the mass resolution by a factor of 3-4 and the abundance sensitivity by a factor of 100. The potential of high analytical performance combined with electroforming techniques for electrode manufacture indicate future practical uses of such instruments. We discuss the development and characterisation of a new in situ spin exchange optical pumping (SEOP) based 3He neutron spin filter polarisation device. We present results from a recent test of the prototype system developed with the Institut Laue-Langevin. The polariser was installed on the polarised reflectometer CRISP at ISIS in the analyser position. The 3He was pumped continuously in situ on the beamline. The system also integrated a 3He adiabatic fast passage spin flipper that allowed reversal of the 3He and therefore neutron polarisation state, allowing for measurement of all four polarisation cross-sections. The system was run for a number of days reaching a 3He polarisation of 63%. 相似文献

Structural analysis of flexible macromolecular systems such as intrinsically disordered or multidomain proteins with flexible linkers is a difficult task as high-resolution techniques are barely applicable. A new approach, ensemble optimization method (EOM), is proposed to quantitatively characterize flexible proteins in solution using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The flexibility is taken into account by allowing for the coexistence of different conformations of the protein contributing to the experimental scattering pattern. These conformers are selected using a genetic algorithm from a pool containing a large number of randomly generated models covering the protein configurational space. Quantitative criteria are developed to analyze the EOM selected models and to determine the optimum number of conformers in the ensemble. Simultaneous fitting of multiple scattering patterns from deletion mutants, if available, provides yet more detailed local information about the structure. The efficiency of EOM is demonstrated in model and practical examples on completely or partially unfolded proteins and on multidomain proteins interconnected by linkers. In the latter case, EOM is able to distinguish between rigid and flexible proteins and to directly assess the interdomain contacts. 相似文献

Polarized 3He spin-filters are currently employed on a wide range of neutron instruments at the ILL, primarily for diffraction, reflectometry and fundamental physics. A wide range of recent and ongoing improvements are enabling the implementation of this technique for wide-angle polarization analysis for inelastic measurements. These include
- • Progress in metastability-exchange optical pumping (MEOP), resulting in on-beam polarization levels of up to 80%.
- • 1st generation “Pastis-1” coils for rotating the neutron polarization at the sample position, allowing for “XYZ” polarization analysis.
- • 2nd generation “Pastis-2” coils with no blind angles in the equatorial plane.
- • Spin-filter cells with glued silicon windows, allowing for wide-angle “banana” cells with very low background scattering.
- • Polarization-preserving capillaries for transferring polarized 3He gas into the cell without manual access.

DC magnetization, neutron depolarization and neutron diffraction (with both polarized and unpolarized neutrons) measurements
have been reported for the Co1.1−x
Zn
x
Ge0.1Fe1.2O1 spinels with x=0.5, 0.6 and 0.7. Neutron depolarization and neutron diffraction measurements confirm the presence of a long range ferrimagnetic
ordering of the local canted spins in these ferrite samples. The observed features of low field magnetization have been explained
under the framework of thermally activated domain wall movement of ferrimagnetic arrangement of local canted spins. An important
role of magnetic anisotropy (due to the presence of Co2+ ions) in establishing the magnetic ordering and domain kinetics in these ferrites has been observed. 相似文献
