The alkylation of m-cresol with isopropyl alcohol in the presence of novel superacidic catalysts named as UDCaT-4, UDCaT-5, and UDCaT-6 was investigated. The catalysts are modified versions of zirconia showing high catalytic activity, stability, and reusability in the presence of water as compared to conventional sulfated zirconia. The objective of the present investigation was to explore the potential of these catalysts in this alkylation of m-cresol with isopropyl alcohol to thymol, which has widescale applications. The reactions were conducted in liquid phase in the temperature range of 433-473 K. Both, O- and C-alkylated products were obtained at lower temperatures, while at higher temperatures, thymol was the main product of the reaction. The catalytic activity increases in the order UDCaT-5 > UDCaT-6 >UDCaT-4 > sulfated zirconia. Thymol could be efficiently obtained with selectivity reaching up to 79% at an isopropyl alcohol conversion of 92% with UDCaT-5. This process can be a replacement for the existing process based on zeolites where high temperature and pressure are required. Synergistic effects of very high sulfur content present (9% S) and preservation of the tetragonal phase in UDCaT-5, in comparison with sulfated zirconia (4% S), were responsible for higher catalytic activity. A systematic investigation of the effects of various operating parameters was accomplished, and a mathematical model is developed to describe the reaction pathway and validated with experimental results. A series of anthraquinone (C(14)O(2)H(8)) derivatives has been studied by means of electron capture negative ion mass spectrometry (ECNI-MS), photoelectron spectroscopy (PES), and AM1 quantum chemical calculations. Mean lifetimes of molecular negative ions M(-.) (MNI) have been measured. The mechanism of long-lived MNI formation in the epithermal energy region of incident electrons has been investigated. A simple model of a molecule (a spherical potential well with the repulsive centrifugal term) has been applied for the analysis of the energy dependence of cross sections at the first stage of the electron capture process. It has been shown that a temporary resonance of MNI at the energy approximately 0.5 eV corresponds to a shape resonance with lifetime 1-2.10(-13) s in the f-partial wave (l = 3) of the incident electron. The next resonant state of MNI at the energy approximately 1.7 eV has been associated with the electron excited Feshbach resonance (whose parent state is a triplet npi* transition). In all cases the initial electron state of the MNI relaxes into the ground state by means of a radiationless transition, and the final state of the MNI is a nuclear excited resonance with a lifetime measurable on the mass spectrometry timescale. A stabilized finite element method, to carry out the linear stability analysis of a two‐dimensional base flow to three‐dimensional perturbations that are periodic along span, is presented. The resulting equations for the time evolution of the disturbance requires a solution to the generalized eigenvalue problem. The analysis is global in nature and is also applicable to non‐parallel flows. Equal‐order‐interpolation functions for velocity and pressure are utilized. Stabilization terms are added to the Galerkin formulation to admit the use of equal‐order‐interpolation functions and to eliminate node‐to‐node oscillations that might arise in advection‐dominated flows. The proposed formulation is tested on two flow problems. First, the mode transitions in the circular Couette flow are investigated. Two scenarios are considered. In the first one, the outer cylinder is at rest, while the inner one spins. Two linearly unstable modes are identified. The primary mode is real and represents the axisymmetric Taylor vortices. The second mode is complex and consists of spiral vortices. For the counter‐rotating cylinders, the primary transition is via the appearance of spiral vortices. Excellent agreement with results from earlier studies is observed. The formulation is also utilized to investigate the parallel and oblique modes of vortex shedding past a cylinder for the Re = 100 flow. It is found that the flow is associated with a large number of unstable oblique shedding modes. UDCaT-5, a modified version of zirconia, efficiently catalyzes alkylation of phenols with alcohols under environmentally safe, heterogeneous reaction conditions with high selectivity and in excellent yields. The high content present in UDCaT-5 with preservation of tetragonal phase of zirconia was responsible for the superactivity. Several phenolic compounds carrying either electron-sulfer releasing or electron-withdrawing substituents in the ortho, meta, and para positions afforded high yields of the products.  相似文献

A novel type of crosslinkable waterborne polyurethane ionomer was prepared by the acetone process. Two new types of sulfonated diols compatible with this process were synthesized from dimethyl 5‐sodium sulfo isophthalate using a one‐ or two‐stage method. Isocyanate‐terminated polyurethane oligomers were prepared from the sulfonated diols with various combinations of diols and diisocyanates and subsequently reacted with amino silane derivatives. Stable, low‐volatile organic chemical, waterborne dispersions of the sulfo‐urethane silanol polymers spontaneously crosslink upon drying without extra additives or processing steps. Despite the lack of organic coalescing solvents, the dispersions have minimum film‐forming temperatures below 10 °C, regardless of glass‐transition temperature. Tensile strengths up to 6000 psi with elongations between 300 and 600% were obtained for the crosslinked films. The hard‐segment content of the films can be controlled to produce films with a Sward–Rocker hardness value up to 42. Through silane end‐group modification, the crosslinking density of the films can also be modified to produce polyurethanes with a wide range of physical properties. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The response and the functioning of the photosynthetic machinery of cotton, Gossypium hirsutum during water stress was studied by leaf optical properties, linear (ETRII) and cyclic electron flow (CEF) and chlorophyll a fluorescence. We observed that in G. hirsutum, during water limitation, Chlorophyll b showed the best correlation with reflectance at 731 nm and is a better indicator of drought. Fv/Fm was observed to be very insensitive to mild water stress. However, during severe water stress the leaves exhibit considerable inhibition in Fv/Fm and an increase in anthocyanin levels by about 20‐fold. CEF was very responsive to mild water stress. The mild drought stress caused large decrease in the ability of the leaves to utilize the light energy. Photosystem I and photosystem II is protected from photoinhibition by high CEF and nonphotochemical quenching under mild water stress. While during severe drought stress, linear electron flow showed a sharp decrease in comparison to CEF. CEF play a major role in G. hirsutum leaves during mild as well as under severe water stress condition and is thus a good indicator of water stress.  相似文献
