The zeta-potentials of the self-assembled surface ionic surfactants (sodium dodecyl sulfate—SDS and hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide—CTAB) on graphite surfaces were determined both from streaming potential and electrophoretic mobility measurements. The adsorption of the surfactants at graphite–liquid interfaces has been studied using atomic force microscopy (AFM) soft-contact imaging which shows the formation of linear, parallel hemicylinders with headgroups oriented towards the solution. The magnitude of the zeta-potential increased with an increase in surfactant concentration, reaching a constant value at a concentration corresponding to the point of surface micelle formation as confirmed from AFM imaging. The streaming potential and electrophoretic mobility measurements showed that the zeta-potentials of SDS and CTAB surface micelles adsorbed at the graphite surface were about −75 and +70 mV, respectively, well in agreement with the values reported for bulk phase micelles in the literature.  相似文献

We demonstrate that a flowing liquid jet can be controllably split into two separate subfilaments through the application of a sufficiently strong tangential stress to the surface of the jet. In contrast, normal stresses can never split a liquid jet. We apply these results to observations of uncontrolled splitting of jets in electric fields. The experimental realization of controllable jet splitting would provide an entirely novel route for producing small polymeric fibers.  相似文献

We present herein a short tripeptide sequence (Lys–Phe–Gly or KFG) that is situated in the juxtamembrane region of the tyrosine kinase nerve growth factor (Trk NGF) receptors. KFG self‐assembles in water and shows a reversible and concentration‐dependent switching of nanostructures from nanospheres (vesicles) to nanotubes, as evidenced by dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The morphology change was associated with a transition in the secondary structure. The tripeptide vesicles have inner aqueous compartments and are stable at pH 7.4 but rupture rapidly at pH≈6. The pH‐sensitive response of the vesicles was exploited for the delivery of a chemotherapeutic anticancer drug, doxorubicin, which resulted in enhanced cytotoxicity for both drug‐sensitive and drug‐resistant cells. Efficient intracellular release of the drug was confirmed by fluorescence‐activated cell sorting analysis, fluorescence microscopy, and confocal microscopy.  相似文献

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) films have been deposited on glass and p-silicon (1 0 0) substrates by DC magnetron sputtering technique to investigate their structural, electrical and optical properties. The surface composition of the TiO2 films has been analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The TiO2 films formed on unbiased substrates were amorphous. Application of negative bias voltage to the substrate transformed the amorphous TiO2 into polycrystalline as confirmed by Raman spectroscopic studies. Thin film capacitors with configuration of Al/TiO2/p-Si have been fabricated. The leakage current density of unbiased films was 1 × 10−6 A/cm2 at a gate bias voltage of 1.5 V and it was decreased to 1.41 × 10−7 A/cm2 with the increase of substrate bias voltage to −150 V owing to the increase in thickness of interfacial layer of SiO2. Dielectric properties and AC electrical conductivity of the films were studied at various frequencies for unbiased and biased at −150 V. The capacitance at 1 MHz for unbiased films was 2.42 × 10−10 F and it increased to 5.8 × 10−10 F in the films formed at substrate bias voltage of −150 V. Dielectric constant of TiO2 films were calculated from capacitance–voltage measurements at 1 MHz frequency. The dielectric constant of unbiased films was 6.2 while those formed at −150 V it increased to 19. The optical band gap of the films decreased from 3.50 to 3.42 eV with the increase of substrate bias voltage from 0 to −150 V.  相似文献

We have synthesized five new cholesterol based gemini cationic lipids possessing hydroxyethyl (-CH(2)CH(2)OH) function on each head group, which differ in the length of the polymethylene spacer chain. These gemini lipids are important for gene delivery processes as they possess pre-optimized molecular features, e.g., cholesterol backbone, ether linkage and a variable spacer chain between both the headgroups of the gemini lipids. Cationic liposomes were prepared from each of these lipids individually and as a mixture of individual cationic gemini lipid and 1,2-dioleoyl phosphatidylethanolamine (DOPE). Each gemini lipid based formulation induced better transfection activity than that of their monomeric counterpart. One such gemini lipid with a -(CH(2))(12)- spacer, HG-12, showed dramatic increase in the mean fluorescence intensity due to the expression of green-fluorescence protein (GFP) in the presence of 10% FBS compared to the conditions where there was no serum. Other gemini lipids retained their gene transfection efficiency without any marked decrease in the presence of serum. The only exception was seen with the gemini with a -(CH(2))(3)- spacer, HG-3, which on gene transfection in the presence of 10% FBS lost ~70% of its transfection efficiency. Overall the gemini lipid with a -(CH(2))(5)- spacer, HG-5, showed the highest transfection activity at N/P (lipid/DNA) ratio of 0.5 and lipid : DOPE molar ratio of 2. Upon comparison of the relevant parameters, e.g., %-transfected cells, the amount of DNA transfected to each cell and %-cell viability all together against Lipofectamine 2000, one of the best commercial transfecting agents, the optimized lipid formulation based on DOPE/HG-5 was found to be comparable. In terms of its ability to induce gene-transfer in the presence of serum and shelf-life DOPE/HG-5 liposome was found to be superior to its commercial counterpart. Confocal imaging analysis confirmed that in the presence of 10% serum using a Lipid : DOPE of 1 : 4 and N/P charge ratio of 0.75 with 1.2 μg DNA per well, HG-5 is better than Lipofectamine 2000.  相似文献

Ultrasonic velocity, u density, ?? and viscosity, ?? of mixtures of N,N-dimethyl acetamide with equimolar mixture of ethanol?+?isopropyl alcohol/isobutyl alcohol/isoamyl alcohol, including those of pure liquids over the entire composition have been measured at T?=?308.15, 313.15, and 318.15?K. Using this data, various thermo-acoustic parameters such as deviations in ultrasonic velocity, ?u, isentropic compressibility, ?k s , viscosity, ????, excess molar volume, $ V_{\text{m}}^{\text{E}} $ and excess Gibb??s free energy of activation for viscous flow, ??G *E have been calculated at different temperatures. The calculated deviation and excess functions have been fitted to the Redlich?CKister type polynomial equation. The influence of temperature on the observed negative and positive values of deviation and excess thermodynamic properties has been explained in terms of molecular interactions present in the investigated acid?Cbase liquid mixtures. The experimental data of ultrasonic velocity have been used to check the applicability of velocity models of Nomoto, Van Dael and Vangeel and Junjie and viscosity data have also been availed to test the applicability of standard viscosity models of Grunberg-Nissan, Hind-Mc Laughlin, and Katti-Chaudhary for all the systems investigated at various temperatures.  相似文献
