Kinetic and thermodynamic study of adsorption of methylene blue and rhodamine B on adsorbent prepared from Hyptis suaveolens (Vilayti Tulsi)

In the present study adsorption behavior of methylene blue and rhodamine B from aqueous solution using adsorbent prepared from “Hyptis suaveolens” (Vilayti Tulsi) was investigated as a function of parameters such as initial concentration, adsorbent dose, pH, contact time and temperature. The adsorption process was pH dependent. The thermodynamic parameters such as $ {{\Updelta}}G,{{\Updelta}}H \,{\text{and}} \,{{\Updelta}}S $ were calculated to investigate the nature of adsorption, their values indicate that the adsorption process is favorable. The first-order, second-order and intra-particle diffusion models were used to describe the kinetic parameter. The Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption models were applied to describe the adsorption equilibrium. Column study was conducted for both dyes.

Enantiospecific total synthesis of lairdinol A

The synthesis of lairdinol A, a component of the host-selective phytotoxin depsilairdin, was achieved in 12 steps (18% overall yield) without the use of protecting groups starting with the Diels-Alder reaction of (R)-carvone with 3-trimethylsilyloxy-1,3-pentadiene. The key step established the trans ring fusion by preferential epoxidation of a trans-fused enone in an equilibrating mixture of the cis-fused and trans-fused diastereomers (i.e., equivalent to a dynamic kinetic resolution of these isomers). The synthesis confirms the absolute configurations of lairdinol A and its enantiomer, cyperusol C.     

Analysis of 99Tc in the radioactive liquid waste after extraction into suitable solvent

⁹⁹Tc is one of the long lived fission product with high fission yield. From radioactive waste management point of view it is very much essential to evaluate the concentration of technetium in the radioactive liquid waste in order to finalise the treatment process to extract/isolate it from the stream which is discharged to the environment. For the estimation of ⁹⁹Tc in the radioactive liquid waste stream, extraction of the stable complex of technetium-tetraphenyl arsonium chloride (TPAC) into chloroform followed by beta counting was studied. Various parameters like pH, time of equilibration, concentration of TPAC in chloroform, use of other solvent for extraction as well as interference of various other radionuclides present in the waste were also studied. The radioactive liquid waste being handled in plant contains high concentrations of salts in the form of sodium nitrate. Hence effect of salt concentration on the percentage extraction was also evaluated. The extraction behavior does not dependent on change in the pH of the solution. Almost 99.5% extraction was observed in the pH range of 1?C13.0. High concentration of salt is affecting the extraction. However, this can be taken care by diluting the radioactive waste. It takes almost 90?min time for maximum extraction. Presence of radionuclides like ¹³⁷Cs, ⁹⁰Sr are not interfering the extraction of ⁹⁹Tc. However, ¹⁰⁶Ru is getting slightly extracted along with ⁹⁹Tc. The error due to ¹⁰⁶Ru can be eliminated by taking gamma spectrum and deducting the activity from the total beta activity to get ⁹⁹Tc activity. Nitrobenzene can be used for extraction of Tc?CTPAC complex in place of chloroform.     

A highly divergent Pictet-Spengler approach for pyrrolo[1,2-a]quinoxalines from aryl amine using 1,2-dinitrobenzene as an oxidant

A convenient Pictet-Splengler approach for the synthesis of substituted pyrrolo[1,2-a]quinoxalines from aryl amine and 1-(2-aminoaryl)-pyrrole has been developed. This is the first domino protocol involving formation of benzaldehyde as an intermediate from benzyl amines and benzyl alcohols using 1,2-DNB as an oxidant, followed by its endo cyclization with 1-(2-aminophenyl)-pyrrole to furnish the pyrrolo[1,2-a]quinoxalines. Notably, this procedure exhibits good functional group tolerance as well as good to moderate yield of pyrrolo[1,2-a]quinoxaline.

Kiton red S dye: Photophysical, photostability, photothermal and narrow-band laser performances using different solvents

Many aspects of photophysical, photostability and laser properties of kiton red S dye remain unresolved, particularly for pumping with 578 nm radiation of CVL and 532 nm output of Nd:YAG lasers, and these are studied using different alcohol- and water-based binary solvents. Our results show that methanol is better suited for low and high-repetition-rate KRS dye lasers because of its superior laser efficiency, photostability as well as photothermal properties.     

Neutron activation analysis of manganese and nickel in commercial steel samples

The non-destructive thermal neutron activation analysis of some commercially available steel samples viz. SS-316, SS-310, SS-304, Tiscral, CA55 and EN 8 is carried out using a²⁵²Cf source. The manganese content of these steel samples is estimated by measuring the -activity of⁵⁶Mn using a single channel analyzer on integration mode and a NaI/Tl/ detector as well as using a high purity germanium detector coupled to a 4K multichannel analyzer. The results obtained by both procedures show reasonable agreement with each other. The nickel content of the various steel samples is also estimated.
