We study the effect of shear flow on the entropic Helfrich interaction in lyotropic surfactant smectic fluids. Arguing that flow induces an effective anisotropic surface tension in bilayers due to a combination of intermonolayer friction, bilayer collisions and convection, we calculate the reduction in fluctuations and hence the renormalised change in effective compression modulus and steady-state layer spacing. We demonstrate that non-permeable or slowly permeating membranes can be susceptible to an undulatory instability of the Helfrich-Hurault type, and speculate that such an instability could be one source of a transition to multilamellar vesicles. 相似文献

We analyze the steady planar shear flow of the modified Johnson-Segalman model, which has an added nonlocal term. We find that the new term allows for unambiguous selection of the stress at which two "phases" coexist, in contrast to the original model. For general differential constitutive models we show the singular nature of stress selection in terms of a saddle connection between fixed points in the equivalent dynamical system. The result means that stress selection is unique under most conditions for space nonlocal models. Finally, illustrated by simple models, we show that stress selection generally depends on the form of the nonlocal terms (weak universality). 相似文献

We report the first determination of the upper limit for the branching ratio of the CP forbidden decay eta-->4pi(0). No events were observed in a sample of 3.0x10(7) eta decays. The experiment was performed with the Crystal Ball multiphoton spectrometer installed in a separated pi(-) beam at the AGS (Alternating Gradient Synchrotron). Shear banding occurs in the flow of complex fluids: various types of shear thinning and shear thickening micelle solutions
and liquid crystals. In order to cope with the strongly inhomogeneous interface between the bands, constitutive models used
in standard rheology must be supplemented by non-local terms. This leads rather generally to non-linear partial differential
equations of the reaction-diffusion type. We use this formalism in order to explain some observed experimental features and
as a guide for future research in this field.

Dislocation-pairing transitions in hot grain boundaries 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We report the finding of a novel grain-boundary structural phase transition in both molecular-dynamics and phase-field-crystal simulations of classical models of bcc Fe. This transition is characterized by pairing of individual dislocations with mixed screw and edge components. We demonstrate that this type of transition is driven by a combination of factors including elastic softening, core interaction, and core disordering. At high homologous temperatures the occurrence of this transition is shown to prevent premelting at misorientation angles where it would otherwise be expected. 相似文献

In dendritic solidification, growth morphologies often display a pronounced sensitivity to small changes in composition. To gain insight into the origins of this phenomenon, we undertake an atomistic calculation of the magnitude and anisotropy of the crystal-melt interfacial free energy in a model alloy system featuring no atomic size mismatch and relatively ideal solution thermodynamics. By comparing the results of these calculations with predictions from recent phase-field calculations, we demonstrate that alloying gives rise to changes in free-energy anisotropies that are substantial on the scale required to induce changes in growth orientations. 相似文献

The equilibrium free energy difference between two long-lived molecular species or "conformational states" of a protein (or any other molecule) can in principle be estimated by measuring the work needed to shuttle the system between them, independent of the irreversibility of the process. This is the meaning of the Jarzynski equality (JE), which we test in this paper by performing simulations that unfold a protein by pulling two atoms apart. Pulling is performed fast relative to the relaxation time of the molecule and is thus far from equilibrium. Choosing a simple protein model for which we can independently compute its equilibrium properties, we show that the free energy can be exactly and effectively estimated from nonequilibrium simulations. To do so, one must carefully and correctly determine the ensemble of states that are pulled, which is more important the farther from equilibrium one performs simulations; this highlights a potential problem in using the JE to extract the free energy from forced unfolding experiments. The results presented here also demonstrate that the free energy difference between the native and denatured states of a protein measured in solution is not always equal to the free energy profile that can be estimated from forced unfolding simulations (or experiments) using the JE. 相似文献
