Synthesis, structure, and antimetastatic activity of thetrans-[Pt(NC5H4C(O)NHC2H4ONO2)2Cl2] complex

Thetrans-[Pt(NC₅H₄C(O)NHC₂H₄ONO₂)₂Cl₂] complex (2) was prepared by the reaction of nicorandyl (N-nitroethoxynicotinamide), which is widely used in cardiology, with K₂PtCl₄ in water. The structure of2 was established by X-ray structural analysis. It was found that complex2 exhibits high antitumor activity, in particular, antimetastatic activity, unlike the analogous Cu^II complex with bromine atoms. Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. Fluorescence and absorption of polystyrene exposed to UV laser radiation

We show that when polystyrene is exposed (for 15–60 sec) to a UV laser light beam (λ = 248 nm), its absorption and luminescent properties change significantly. In the irradiated polymer, optical centers are formed with absorption bands in the 280–460 nm region and fluorescence bands in the 330–520 nm region. Semiempirical calculation of the fine structure of the indium ion

The fine-structure parameters of a series of configurations of the first ion of indium and the gyromagnetic ratios in intermediate coupling are calculated by a semiempirical method in the single-configuration approximation.

Astrogeometry: Toward mathematical foundations

Inimage processing (e.g., inastronomy), the desired black-and-white image is, from the mathematical viewpoint, aset. Hence, to process images, we need to process sets. To define a generic set, we need infinitely many parameters; therefore, if we want to represent and process sets in the computer, we must restrict ourselves to finite-parameter families of sets that will be used to approximate the desired sets. The wrong choice of a family can lead to longer computations and worse approximation. Hence, it is desirable to find the family that it isthe best in some reasonable sense. In this paper, we show how the problems of choosing the optimal family of sets can be formalized and solved. As a result of the described general methodology, forastronomical images, we get exactly the geometric shapes that have been empirically used by astronomers and astrophysicists; thus, we have atheoretical explanation for these shapes.     

Prediction problem in quantum mechanics is intractable (NP-Hard)

It is proved that both the prediction problem and the problem of reconstructing the state from the observations in quantum mechanics are NP-hard.
