Composition of the basic fraction of marijuana and tobacco condensates: A comparative study by capillary GC/MS

Summary Combined capillary gas chromatography/mass spectrometry has been used to characterize the basic fraction of Mexican marijuana and standard tobacco smoke condensates. A thermostable Superox-coated glass capillary column permitted elution of relatively large nitrogen-containing compounds. Substantial qualitative and quantitative differences between the two materials were noted.Dedicated to Dr. L. S. Ettre on the occasion of his 60th birthday.     

Separation of fluorescent oligosaccharide derivatives by microcolumn techniques based on electrophoresis and liquid chromatography.

Various aldose oligosaccharides can be quantitatively derivatized into primary amines for subsequent reaction with fluorogenic reagents, such as 3-(4-carboxybenzoyl)-2-quinolinecarboxaldehyde or 3-benzoyl-2-naphthaldehyde. Capillary electrophoresis (CE) and microcolumn liquid chromatography (LC), coupled with laser-induced fluorescence detection, were evaluated as a means of separating complex oligosaccharide mixtures. Whereas microcolumn LC and open-tubular CE appear confined in their utility to relatively small oligosaccharides, unprecedented results were obtained with polyacrylamide gel-filled capillaries on hydrolyzed malto-oligosaccharides and enzymatically degraded samples of chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid.     

Applications of a miniaturized fluorimetric photodiode array detector for capillary liquid chromatography

A high sensitivity, multichannel fluorescence detector with small volume has been developed for capillary column liquid chromatography. Using an intensified linear photodiode array to monitor fluorescence emission, several important mixtures exhibiting native fluorescence have been examined following high efficiency separation on a capillary column. By correlating mass spectral, fluorescence spectral, and retention time data, information of potential utility in the structural elucidation of aromatic molecules contained in complex mixtures can be obtained. Examples include the separation and spectral examination of the polyaromatic compounds in samples of both biological and environmental interest.     

Enhanced post-source decay and cross-ring fragmentation of oligosaccharides facilitated by conversion to amino derivatives

Post-source decay (PSD) fragmentation of chemically or enzymatically produced aminoglycans has been evaluated through matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry. Conversion of native glycans to their respective aminoglycan derivatives improved detection sensitivity of the usual fragments and promoted cross-ring fragmentation of linear oligosaccharides, facilitating linkage recognition. The cross-ring fragmentations for both dextrin and dextran oligosaccharides were not limited to the reducing-end glucose moiety, as they were extended throughout the entire molecule. When the amino group was generated for N-glycans derived from three different glycoproteins, an enhancement of PSD was observed, without a significant extent of cross-ring fragmentation.     

Analytical characterization of a facile porous polymer monolithic trypsin microreactor enabling peptide mass mapping using mass spectrometry

A simple and rapid single-step method is presented to fabricate an enzyme reactor using trypsin immobilized on a macroporous polymer monolith. A reactor produced in a capillary format is ready to use within 1 h of preparation. The monomers making up the monolith, including N-acryloxysuccinimide for covalent immobilization of the enzyme, are mixed with trypsin and introduced into the column by capillary force for polymerization/immobilization. The enzyme activity from column-to-column is reproducible below 5% relative standard deviation (RSD), while the reactor is durable for at least 20 weeks when stored at room temperature. The apparent kinetic constants V(max) and K(m) are of value similar to those obtained by free trypsin in solution. Enzymatic digestion of proteins was shown to be feasible on a time-scale of seconds and submicromolar concentrations enabling peptide mass mapping by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry.     

Determination of inorganic arsenic species As(III) and As(V) by high performance liquid chromatography with hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry detection

The paper presents the principles and advantages of a technique combining high performance liquid chromatography and hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry (HPLC-HGAAS) applied to speciation analysis of inorganic species of arsenic As(III) and As(V) in ground water samples. With separation of the arsenic species on an ion-exchange column in the chromatographic system and their detection by the hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry, the separation of the analytical signals of the arsenic species was excellent at the limits of determination of 1.5 ng/ml As(III) and 2.2 ng/ml As(V) and RSD of 4.3% and 7.8% for the concentration of 25 ng/ml. The hyphenated technique has been applied for determination of arsenic in polluted ground water in the course of the study on migration of micropollutants. For total arsenic concentration two independent methods: HGICP-OES and HGAAS were used for comparison of results of real samples analysis.     

On the Vanishing Electron-Mass Limit in Plasma Hydrodynamics in Unbounded Media

We consider the zero-electron-mass limit for the Navier?CStokes?CPoisson system in unbounded spatial domains. Assuming smallness of the viscosity coefficient and ill-prepared initial data, we show that the asymptotic limit is represented by the incompressible Navier?CStokes system, with a Brinkman damping, in the case when viscosity is proportional to the electron-mass, and by the incompressible Euler system provided the viscosity is dominated by the electron mass. The proof is based on the RAGE theorem and dispersive estimates for acoustic waves, and on the concept of suitable weak solutions for the compressible Navier?CStokes system.
