Discovery of a herbicidal lead using polymer-bound activated esters in generating a combinatorial library of amides and esters

Summary A combinatorial library containing mixtures of amides and esters was prepared through solid-phase chemistry. The advantages of using solid-phase chemistry over solution-phase chemistry to prepare this library are discussed. The library was screened through a high-throughput whole organism herbicidal assay upon which a mixture containing amides was found to have herbicidal activity. Deconvolution of the mixture providedN-(3-benzoylphenyl)-3-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-1-methyl)-1H-pyrazole-5-carboxamide as a herbicidal lead with broadleaf and narrowleaf pre-emergence herbicidal activity as low as 100 g/ha on some weed species. This study represents the first report of an agrochemical discovered using a combinatorial approach. Rapid comprehensive amino acid analysis by liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry: comparison to cation exchange with post-column ninhydrin detection

Ion-exchange chromatography with ninhydrin detection remains the gold standard for detecting inborn errors of amino acid catabolism and transport. Disadvantages of such analysis include long chromatography times and interference from other ninhydrin-positive compounds. The aim of this project was to develop a more rapid and specific technique using liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). Optimal fragmentation patterns for 32 amino acids were determined on a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer following butylation. Chromatographic characteristics of each of the amino acids were determined using C8 reversed-phase chromatography with 20% acetonitrile/0.1% formic acid as isocratic mobile phase. Quantitation using eleven deuterated internal standards was compared to cation exchange and ninhydrin detection on a Beckman 7300 system. Following methanol extraction and butylation, determination of 32 amino acids required 20 min. The dynamic range of each amino acid was generally 1-1000 micromol/L. Imprecision ranged from 7 to 23% (CV) over 6 months and recovery ranged from 88-125%. Deming regression with the Beckman 7300 yielded slopes from 0.4-1.2, intercepts from -21 to 65 micromol/L, correlation coefficients from 0.84-0.99 and Syx from 2-125 micromol/L. Isobaric amino acids were separated by chromatography (e.g. leucine, isoleucine) or by unique fragmentation (e.g., alanine, beta-alanine). LC/MS/MS is comparable to traditional LC-ninhydrin detection. Mass spectral detection shortens analysis times and reduces potential for interference in detecting inborn metabolic errors.

In this article, we introduce the concept of lacunary statistical convergence of order α of real number sequences and give some inclusion relations between the sets of lacunary statistical convergence of order α and strong Nαθ(p)-summability. Furthermore, some relations between the spaces Nαθ(p) and Sαθare examined.     

How does cold constrain life cycles of terrestrial plants and animals?

Short summer seasons with low thermal energy input characterise polar ecosystems. Climatic variables and physical isolation of terrestrial habitats act as selective filters which must be passed to allow colonisation, establishment and survival in these extreme environments. Life history studies of the terrestrial biota of such ecosystems give little evidence of adaptive responses to low temperatures having evolved in situ, even though behavioural, ecophysiological and biochemical features allowing tolerance of the likely extremes are well-developed. Observed life history strategies are often consistent with the general predictions of adversity (A) or stress (S) selection. However, biota successful in these extreme environments may be better-grouped by the lack of particular life history features, rather than common possession.     

SOME GEOMETRIC PROPERTIES OF A NEW DIFFERENCE SEQUENCE SPACE INVOLVING LACUNARY SEQUENCES

In this paper, we define a new generalized difference sequence space involving lacunary sequence. Then, we examine k-NUC property and property （β） for this space and also show that it is not rotund where p = （pr） is a bounded sequence of positive real numbers with pr ≥ 1 for all r ∈ N.
