Exhibition of surface steps by high resolution electron microscopy of monoclinic rare earth sesquioxides

On high resolution structure images, the existence of a superperiod has been observed, linked with the apparition of extraspots in the diffraction diagram. The specimen (B-Sm₂O₃) can be described as composed of layers of thickness 6 Å, nearly perpendicular to the incident electron beam. These layers are of 3 different kinds. We have shown that the apparition of the superperiod can be linked with steps of height 6 or 12 Å (i.e. 1 or 2 layers): computed images, using this hypothesis exhibit the observed superperiod, even for thicknesses around 230 Å. This allows atomic steps to be imaged with a high resolution structure image.     

Structures and defects of Au particles (1–3 nm) by HREM

Gold particles produced by the inert gas aggregation technique were observed in HREM. Among the smallest ones (1–3 nm), four structures were recognized: decahedra, icosahedra, cuboctahedra and body-centered tetragonal or orthorhombic structures. The observation of the latter structure for Au clusters is reported for the first time. By improved image processing, their morphologies and defects were precisely determined. Most of them contained small distortions compared to the ideal structures.     

Slow motion of a conducting fluid between two rotating walls

Summary An investigation is presented of the flow of a viscous, conducting fluid between two plane walls, which rotate around a common axis towards each other. The flow is considered to be under the influence of a magnetic field, set up by a line-current along the axis of rotation.Under the assumption of low hydrodynamic and magnetic Reynolds-number, expressions are given for the velocity and the pressure gradient.At present at Brussels: Ecole Royale Militaire, Physique des Plasmas.     

Applied mathematical modelling in marine science

The essential elements of a general interdisciplinary marine model are reviewed; state variables are identified, evolution equations are discussed and major parameters are indicated. The methods of reducing the size of the model by aggregation in state space (reduction of scope) or averaging in physical space (reduction of support) are revised with particular emphasis on the associated parameterization of the non-linear effects. Examples of application are given in illustration and comparison of the models' predictions with observations indicates the degree of accuracy and the limits of viability of present state marine modelling.     

On stage V recovery in VIa b.c.c. metals

Abstract

A resistometric study at 4.2 °K of the high-temperature recovery spectrum of neutron-irradiated molybdenum as a function of fast fluence and of cold-worked molybdenum as a function of the heating program, yields evidence against vacancy migration in the 0.31 T_m stage for VIa b.c.c. metals.
