An activated building block for the introduction of the histidine side chain in aliphatic oligourea foldamers

A new N-Boc-protected monomer for the synthesis of oligourea foldamers containing the (1H-imidazolyl-4yl)methyl side chain of histidine, has been prepared in seven steps from Trt-His(τ-Trt)-OMe. This protecting group combination on histidine was found to be critical to ensure efficient access to the requisite activated building block. This new derivative, suitable for solid phase synthesis, expands the current arsenal of building blocks with proteinogenic side chains useful for the design of peptidomimetic oligourea foldamers.     

Precise determination of 6Li cold collision parameters by radio-frequency spectroscopy on weakly bound molecules

We employ radio-frequency spectroscopy on weakly bound (6)Li(2) molecules to precisely determine the molecular binding energies and the energy splittings between molecular states for different magnetic fields. These measurements allow us to extract the interaction parameters of ultracold (6)Li atoms based on a multichannel quantum scattering model. We determine the singlet and triplet scattering lengths to be a(s) = 45.167(8)a(0) and a(t) = -2140(18)a(0) (1a(0) = 0.052 917 7 nm), and the positions of the broad Feshbach resonances in the energetically lowest three s-wave scattering channels to be 83.41(15), 69.04(5), and 81.12(10) mT.     

Resonator-enhanced optical dipole trap for fermionic lithium atoms

We demonstrate a novel optical dipole trap that is based on enhancement of the optical power density of a Nd:YAG laser beam in a resonator. The trap is particularly suited for experiments with ultracold gases, as it combines a potential depth of the order of 1 mK with storage times of several tens of seconds. We study the interactions in a gas of fermionic lithium atoms in our trap and observe the influence of spin-changing collisions and off-resonant photon scattering. A key element in reaching long storage times is the use of an ultralow-noise laser. The dependence of storage time on laser noise is investigated.     

Stereochemistry and reactivity of F- and H-vinyldiazocarbonyl compounds and their phosphazines: synthesis of pyrazoles and pyridazines

3-(Trifluoromethyl)-substituted (F) 2-vinyl-2-diazocarbonyl compounds, having cis-relationship of functional groups (AlkO₂C, CN₂), do not undergo 1,5-electrocyclization, but readily take part in the tandem Staudinger-diaza-Wittig reactions to produce trifluoromethyl-substituted pyridazines, whereas their non-fluorinated analogs (H), with trans-configuration, easily cyclize to pyrazoles, but remain intact under Staudinger-diaza-Wittig reaction conditions. The difference in the reactivity of H- and F-vinyldiazoketones, vinyldiazoacetates, and derived phosphazines is apparently caused by the different stereochemical arrangements of the AlkO₂C and CN₂ groups.     

Stepwise interfacial self-assembly of nanoparticles via specific DNA pairing

In the present work, we succeeded in alternatively depositing inorganic nanoparticles and functionalized DNA bases onto the water/oil interface from the water and oil bulk phases. The ligands used were functional thymines and adenines. Their thiol and phosphate groups were used to cap inorganic nanoparticles and their thymine and adenine groups to alter the surface functionality of the nanoparticles, thus enabling a layer-by-layer growth fashion of nanoparticles at the interface. The multiple particle ligation rendered the resulting nanoparticle films rather mechanically robust. As results, the freestanding asymmetric bilayer and trilayer films, composed of negatively-charged Au, positively-charged CdTe, and/or organic Ag nanoparticles were constructed; their areas were as large as over several centimetres, depending on the sizes of the containers used. Our work should bring up a novel methodology to generate asymmetric multilayer films of nanoparticles with a defined control of electron or charge across the films.     

Singularities in a Solution to a Rotating Orthotropic Disk with Temperature Gradient

A semi-analytical solution is obtained for a rotating stress-free edge disk of constant thickness and density. In the plastic range, the Hill’s quadratic orthotropic yield criterion is adopted. In the elastic range, the Hooke’s law holds with thermal effects included. The analysis of singularities performed may be used for correct implementation of numerical codes and preliminary engineering design.     

Some remarks on compact constant mean curvature hypersurfaces in a halfspace of ℍ n+1

We consider embedded compact hypersurfacesM in a halfspace of hyperbolic space with boundaryM in the boundary geodesic hyperplaneP of the halfspace and with non-zero constant mean curvature. We prove the following. Let {M _n } be a sequence of such hypersurfaces withM _n contained in a disk of radiusr _n centered at a point P such thatr _n 0 and that eachM _n is a large. H-hypersurface,H > 1. Then there exists a subsequence of {M _n } converging to the sphere of mean curvatureH tangent toP at. In the case of smallH-hypersurfaces orH 1, if we add a condition on the curvature of the boundary, there exists a subsequence of {M _n } which are graphs. The convergence is smooth on compact subset of ³ .     

Uniqueness of H-surfaces in {\mathbb{H}}^2 \times \mathbb{R},{{\vert H\vert \leq 1/2}} , with boundary one or two parallel horizontal circles

We prove that a H-surface M in ${\mathbb{H}}^2 \times {\mathbb{R}} ,\vert H\vert \leq 1/2$ , inherits the symmetries of its boundary $\partial M,$ when $\partial M$ is either a horizontal curve with curvature greater than one or two parallel horizontal curves with curvature greater than one, whose distance is greater or equal to π. Furthermore we prove that the asymptotic boundary of a surface with mean curvature bounded away from zero consists of parts of straight lines, provided it is sufficiently regular.
