Retardation characteristics and birefringence of a multiple-order crystalline quartz plate

A crystalline quartz plate of thickness 1.070 mm is calibrated between 370 and 794 nm. Throughout this spectral interval, the retardance varied by 32π and the plate introduced quarterwave retardance 16 times at different wavelengths. The birefringence (n_e−n_o) of crystalline quartz was calculated as a single quantity and varied from 0.00971 at 370 nm to 0.00891 at 794 nm. All measurements were carried out at 23°C.     

Multiparameter Polynomial Adaptive Stabilizers

In 1983 Morse proved, for unknown scalar one-dimensional linearsystems, the nonexistence of rational or polynomial universalstabilizers (UAS). In 1983, Nussbaum gave an example of an analyticUAS. In our paper, it is shown that there exist time-invariantpolynomial UAS's with multidimensional gain adaptation. Thedesign procedure is developed for linear, minimum-phase systemsof relative degree one. Convergence of the closed-loop systemis proved. Some numerical simulations are provided.     

A new ent-labdane eiterpenoid lactone from Andrographis paniculata

A new ent-labdane diterpenoid lactone with a new natural product was isolated from Andrographis paniculata. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectral evidences including 2D NMR.

Applications of the Poincaré sphere in polarization metrology

The Poincaré sphere representation of polarization states is used to derive two auxiliary equations for phase retardance measurements. These equations, in addition to another two previously derived equations, allow for extending the range of validity of a model for calibrating phase plates in pairs. In another application, the sphere is used to explain a new method for identifying the principal axes of two birefringent phase plates during their calibration.     

Microwave-assisted one-pot synthesis of 3-substituted-3,4-dihydrocoumarins via tendem Konevenagel and Hantzsch reactions

A convenient route for the synthesis of 3,4-dihydrocoumarin derivates from salicylaldehyde derivates and 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds under solvent-free microwave irradiation conditions was described. In this way, a range of compounds was obtained in moderate to good yields in a short reaction time.     

Self-injection length in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3-YBa2Cu3O7-δ ferromagnet-superconductor multilayer thin films

We have carried out extensive studies on the self-injection problem in barrierless heterojunctions between La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO₃ (LCMO) and YBa₂Cu₃O_7-δ (YBCO) thin films. The heterojunctions were formed in situ by sequentially growing LCMO and YBCO films on 〈100〉 LaAlO₃ (LAO) substrate using a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) system. YBCO micro-bridges with 64 μm width were patterned both on the LAO (control) and LCMO side of the substrate. Critical current, I _c, was measured at 77 K on both the control side as well as the LCMO side for different YBCO film thickness. It was observed that while the control side showed a J _c of ∼ 2 × 10⁶ A/cm², the LCMO side showed about half the value for the same thickness (1800 ?). The difference in J _c indicates that a certain thickness of YBCO has become ‘effectively’ normal due to self-injection. From the measurement of J _c at two different thicknesses (1800 ? and 1500 ?) of YBCO films both on the LAO as well as the LCMO side, the value of self-injection length (at 77 K) was estimated to be ∼ 900 ?. To the authors’ best knowledge, this is the first time that self-injection length has been quantified. A control experiment carried out with LaNiO₃ deposited by PLD on YBCO did not show any evidence of self-injection.

Binary,ternary and quaternary complexes invloved in the systems pyridoxamine-glycine-imidazole with some bivalent metal ions

Equilibrium-based computer models using MINIQUAD-75 program were utilized to determine the stoichiometry and formation constants involved in the systems pyridoxamine(Pm)-glycine (Gly)-imidazole (lmd) with CO(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) metal ions. The data were obtained from potentiometric pH titration of the various binary and ternary quaternary systems under physiological-like conditions (0.15 M NaNO₃-37°C). Various composition ratios of metal and ligands were used. The ligand concentrations did not exceed 4 times the concentration of metal ion in the binary systems and 4 times of the metal ions in ternary systems. In case of the quaternary systems only imidazole concentrations were two or four times the concentrations of metal ions keeping those of other ligands equal to that of metal ions. The stability constants of the quaternary species are discussed in terms of binary and ternary constants as are the effect of ring size on the stability of mixed ligand species. In addition, electrostatic as well as statistical effects also are mentioned and the biological implications of these model equilibria are described.
