Fundamental groups of the complements of certain plane non-tame torus sextics

The moduli space of torus sextics with the configuration of singularities {A₂+A₅+2E₆} has two connected components. We compute the fundamental groups π₁(CP²−C) for sextics C in both components and study their differences.     

Photorefractive Four-Wave Mixing Switches Utilizing Pockels Effect -Longitudinal and Lateral Switches-

We carried out detailed calculations for photorefractive wave-mixing switches based on one of three crystals with high electro-optic coefficients, namely, BaTiO₃, Strontium Barium Niobate (SBN (0.75)), and Potasium Sodium Strontium Barium Niobate (KNSBN). A comparison of results for the three crystals shows that a 0_-cut BaTiO³ crystal is suitable for a longitudinal switch and requires a voltage of about 80 for a 2-mm-thick crystal to induce sufficient phase mismatch. The electrodes must be transparent for the incident and diffracted beams. A 45_-cut SBN (0.75) crystal, however, is suitable for a lateral switch and requires a voltage of about 150 for a 1-mm-wide crystal. The electrodes do not need to be transparent.     

Solvent extraction of alkali metal ions with chromium complexes

Solvent extraction of alkali metal ions by batch and counter-current distribution methods was investigated with tetrathiocyanatodiamminechromate(III) and tetrathiocyanatodianilinechromate(III) as reagents and nitromethane and nitrobenzene as organic solvents. The distribution ratios of alkali metal ions in the various systems were measured. Cesium was readily extracted with the aniline compound and nitrobenzene. The separation of sodium from potassium in trace amounts was possible by the counter-current distribution method.     

Stark effects on the phosphorescence spectra of p-benzoquinone

Stark effects on the phosphorescence spectra of p-benzoquinone have been studied in naphthalene crystals at temperatures between 1.7 and 30 K. The experimental data establish that the band splitting of 24 cm^?1 arises from a double minimum potential in the T₁ state.     

A new synthetic route to 2-substituted naphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione2-Substituted Naphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione

4,9-Dimethoxynaphtho[2,3-b]furan 9 was obtained in 91% yield via the reductive methylation of naphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione 2 . After treatment of 9 with butyllithium, the mixture was allowed to react with N,N-dimethylacetamide, followed by oxidization with cerium(IV) diammonium nitrate to give 2-acetylnaphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione 1 . 2-Formylnaphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione 13 and 2-trimethylsilyl-naphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione 14 were also obtained from 9 by a similar method. The halodesilylations of 14 easily gave 2-iodonaphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione 16 , 2-bromonaphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione 17 , and 2-chloronaphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione 18 in 82%, and 93% and 83% yield, respectively. Furthermore, the nitrodesilylation of 14 gave 2-nitronaphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione 3 in 77% yield.     

Spongistatin synthetic studies. An efficient, second-generation construction of an advanced ABCD intermediate

[reaction: see text] A short, efficient, and stereocontrolled synthesis of (-)-4, an advanced ABCD subunit of the spongistatins, has been achieved. Central to the synthetic strategy is the multicomponent linchpin union of silyl dithianes with epoxides to access both the AB and CD fragments. Fragment coupling was then achieved via an efficient stereoselective aldol reaction. The linear sequence required 22 steps and proceeded in 4.0% overall yield.     

Exploratory Investigations Probing a Preparatively Versatile, Pyridinium Salt Photoelectrocyclization-Solvolytic Aziridine Ring Opening Sequence

A novel pyridinium salt photoelectrocyclization-nucleophilic bicyclic aziridine ring opening reaction sequence has been investigated in order to determine its preparative potential. N-Alkylpyridinium perchlorates were found to undergo photoinduced electrocyclization upon irradiation in nucleophilic solvents, such as H(2)O and MeOH, to efficiently produce 6-alkyl-6-azabicyclo[3.1.0]hex-2-en-4-yl alcohols and ethers. The bicyclic aziridine photoproducts react with a number of different nucleophiles (e.g., H(2)O, MeOH, AcOH, AcSH) under acid-catalyzed conditions to produce 5-(nucleophile-substituted)-4-(alkylamino)cyclopenten-3-yl alcohols and ethers. The aziridine ring opening processes are both regioselective and stereoselective, yielding trans,trans-trisubstituted cyclopentenes exclusively, apparently as a consequence of the operation of an SN(2) mechanism. The effects of C-alkyl substitution on the regiochemistry of the pyridinium cation photocyclization reaction were briefly probed, and a method was developed to produce trans,cis-trisubstituted cyclopentenes by use of this tandem preparative sequence.     

Effect of Headgroups on Small‐Ion Permeability across Archaea‐Inspired Tetraether Lipid Membranes

This paper examines the effects of four different polar headgroups on small‐ion membrane permeability from liposomes comprised of Archaea‐inspired glycerolmonoalkyl glycerol tetraether (GMGT) lipids. We found that the membrane‐leakage rate across GMGT lipid membranes varied by a factor of ≤1.6 as a function of headgroup structure. However, the leakage rates of small ions across membranes comprised of commercial bilayer‐forming 1‐palmitoyl‐2‐oleoyl‐sn‐glycerol (PO) lipids varied by as much as 32‐fold within the same series of headgroups. These results demonstrate that membrane leakage from GMGT lipids is less influenced by headgroup structure, making it possible to tailor the structure of the polar headgroups on GMGT lipids while retaining predictable leakage properties of membranes comprised of these tethered lipids.
