K α L 1 satellite multiplet structure of photon-excited chlorine atoms

Summary An attempt is made to study theK _α L ¹ satellite multiplet structure of chlorine atoms in different compounds by photon excitation. A comparison of the averageK _α L ¹ group energy shift from the diagram line with those based on Dirac-Fock evaluations with different number ofM-shell electrons shows a reasonable agreement. The intensity ratios are found to be higher than those studied in Mg compounds in general.     

Errors in the determination of silica in lead-bearing samples caused by preliminary separation of lead sulphate

Some procedures for the gravimetric determination of silica in lead-bearing samples involve the extraction of lead sulphate with ammonium acetate. Results for silica are then low because some silica is dissolved in ammonium acetate solution. Correct results can be obtained only by avoiding fuming with sulphuric acid. If samples contain a large proportion of insoluble silica, preliminary fusion with sodium hydroxide is recommended.     

Use of isothermal microcalorimetry in pharmaceutical preformulation studies

Excipient compatibility of a new chemical entity was assessed using an isothermal microcalorimeter. Mixtures of an active pharmaceutical ingredient with a primary amine group and excipients were prepared in a 1:1 ratio and compatibility monitored by exposing to 50, 60 and 70°C in presence of 200 mL of water. The new chemical entity, a primary amine, reacted with reducing sugars such as lactose and resulted in a brown discoloration. This reaction is the Maillard type condensation reaction between amines and reducing sugars. The rate of reaction was dependent on the temperature with rapid degradation at higher temperatures. No other incompatibility was apparent between the primary amine and other excipients This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Favipiravir (SARS-CoV-2) degradation impurities: Identification and route of degradation mechanism in the finished solid dosage form using LC/LC–MS method

Favipiravir finished dosage was approved for emergency use in many countries to treat SARS-CoV-2 patients. A specific, accurate, linear, robust, simple, and stability-indicating HPLC method was developed and validated for the determination of degradation impurities present in favipiravir film-coated tablets. The separation of all impurities was achieved from the stationary phase (Inert sustain AQ-C18, 250 × 4.6 mm, 5-μm particle) and mobile phase. Mobile phase A contained KH₂PO₄ buffer (pH 2.5 ± 0.05) and acetonitrile in the ratio of 98:2 (v/v), and mobile phase B contained water and acetonitrile in the ratio of 50:50 (v/v). The chromatographic conditions were optimized as follows: flow rate, 0.7 mL/min; UV detection, 210 nm; injection volume, 20 μL; and column temperature, 33°C. The proposed method was validated per the current International Conference on Harmonization Q2 (R1) guidelines. The recovery study and linearity ranges were established from the limit of quantification to 150% optimal concentrations. The method validation results were found to be between 98.6 and 106.2% for recovery and r² = 0.9995–0.9999 for linearity of all identified impurities. The method precision results were achieved below 5% of relative standard deviation. Forced degradation studies were performed in chemical and physical stress conditions. The compound was sensitive to chemical stress conditions. During the study, the analyte degraded and converted to unknown degradation impurities, and its molecular mass was found using the LC–MS technique and established degradation pathways supported by reaction of mechanism. The developed method was found to be suitable for routine analysis of research and development and quality control.     

Filtered optical feedback induced frequency dynamics in semiconductor lasers

We demonstrate experimentally and numerically that, by spectrally filtering the delayed optical feedback into a semiconductor laser, one can elicit novel dynamics in the frequency of the laser output light on a time scale that is set by the delay time of the feedback. In particular, we show that through a judicious choice of the filter bandwidth, and its frequency relative to that of the laser, one can produce controlled oscillations in the frequency of light from the laser.     

Low-dimensional models for vertically falling viscous films

Long wave evolution on free falling viscous films is described using a new evolution equation. The scaling proposed here brings in the viscous and pressure correction terms that are missing in the existing long-wave equations. Small amplitude expansion of the equation gives a dissipative form of the Kuromoto-Sivashinsky equation. Improved accuracy of the new equation over existing equations is demonstrated by comparison of neutral curves with Orr-Sommerfeld equations and experimental data.
