Two sterically equivalent series of phenoxy-terminated 5-alkoxy-2-(4-alkoxyphenyl)pyrimidine liquid crystals were synthesised, and their mesogenic properties were characterised by polarised optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The phenoxy end-group causes a significant increase in melting point and inhibits – at least partially – the mesomorphism of these materials relative to the parent isomers; in most cases, the broad enantiotropic SmC phase formed by the parent isomers is suppressed by the addition of the phenoxy end-group. However, detailed analyses by small-angle X-ray scattering and monodomain 2D X-ray scattering suggest that these compounds form a SmA phase with a partially intercalated bilayer structure in which the phenoxy end-groups are nanosegregated. Such an intercalated bilayer structure might enable the tuning of smectogenic properties by appropriate substitution of the phenoxy end-groups.  相似文献

Measurements of synchrotron radiation emitted by 30-MeV runaway electrons in the TEXTOR-94 tokamak show that the runaway population decays after switching on neutral beam injection (NBI). The decay starts only with a significant delay, which decreases with increasing NBI heating power. This delay provides direct evidence of the energy dependence of runaway confinement, which is expected if magnetic modes govern the loss of runaways. Application of the theory by Mynick and Strachan [Phys. Fluids 24, 695 (1981)] yields estimates for the "mode width" (delta) of magnetic perturbations: delta<0.5 cm in Ohmic discharges, increasing to delta = 4.4 cm for 0. 6 MW NBI.  相似文献

First-principles molecular dynamics (FPMD) simulations and static quantum chemical (QC) calculations are used to evaluate the tensile strengths, σ(c), of interfaces consisting of (0001) surfaces of α-Al(2)O(3) separated by small organic species. The evaluation of σ(c) with FPMD was achieved by performing simulations in which the simulation cell was extending in a direction normal to the fracture plane until rupture of the interface occurred. The static QC calculations employed an approach which treated fracture of the interface as a competition between uniform extension of the simulation cell and crack formation at the rupture site, which is analogous to that used in the construction of universal binding energy relationships. The results showed that the static QC calculations accurately reproduced the FPMD simulations with respect to tensile strength and the cell extension at which rupture occurred, provided that the rupture site employed in the static calculations matched the site at which rupture occurred during the FPMD simulations. A simple strategy for identifying the rupture site, even in complex systems containing many potential rupture sites, is proposed. Overall, the work extends the calculation of tensile strengths with static QC methods to highly heterogeneous interfaces, thus providing a computationally efficient alternative to demanding FPMD simulations for this purpose.  相似文献

Assigning effective atomic charges that properly reproduce the electrostatic fields of molecules is a crucial step in the construction of accurate interatomic potentials. We propose a new approach to calculate these charges, which as previous approaches are, is based on the idea of charge equilibration. However, we only allow charge to flow between covalently bonded neighbors by using the concept of so-called split charges. The semiempirical fit parameters in our approach do not only reflect atomic properties (electronegativity and atomic hardness) but also bond-dependent properties. The new method contains two popular but hitherto disjunct approaches as limiting cases. We apply our methodology to a set of molecules containing the elements silicon, carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen. Effective charges derived from electrostatic potential surfaces can be predicted more than twice as accurately as with previous works, at the expense of one additional fit parameter per bond type controlling the polarizability between two bonded atoms. Additional bond-type parameters can be introduced, but barely improve the results. An increase in accuracy of only 30% over existing techniques is achieved when predicting Mulliken charges. However, this could be improved with additional bond-type parameters.  相似文献

The neutral vapors above liquid alcohol/ether mixtures, (diethyl ether/methanol, diethyl ether/ethanol, tetrahydrofuran/methanol, and tetrahydrofuran/ethanol) were co-expanded with He in a supersonic jet, ionized with a 118-nm vacuum ultraviolet laser, and detected in a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. In each case, features attributed to protonated alcohol-ether dimers and protonated ether monomers were observed, as well as those ions obtained by ionizing neat alcohol or ether samples alone. Theoretical calculations, carried out to establish the energetics of the various possible reactions leading to the formation of the observed binary adducts, indicate that the most thermodynamically favorable pathway corresponds to the addition of a protonated alcohol monomer to neutral ether.  相似文献

The mechanism of the addition of nonenolizable aldehydes and ketones to group 14 (di)metallenes has been examined through a theoretical study of the addition of formaldehyde to Si=C, Ge=C, Si=Si, Si=Ge, and Ge=Ge bonds at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) and CAS-MCQDPT2/6-31++G(d,p) levels of theory. The reaction pathways located can be grouped as either involving the formation of singlet diradical or zwitterionic intermediates or as concerted processes. Within each group of reaction pathways, several different mechanisms have been located, with not all mechanisms being available to all of the (di)metallenes. It was found that for reactions in which a Si-O bond results (i.e., addition to Si=C, Si=Si, and Si=Ge) both diradical and zwitterionic intermediates are possible; however, the formation of diradical intermediates was not found for reactions that result in the formation of a Ge-O bond (addition to Ge=C and Ge=Ge). The underlying cause of this pathway selectivity is examined, as well as the effect of solvent on the relative energies of the pathways. The results of the study shed light on the cause of experimentally obtained results regarding the mechanism of the reaction of (di)metallenes with nonenolizable ketones and aldehydes.  相似文献
