Photorefractive Four-Wave Mixing Switches Utilizing Pockels Effect -Longitudinal and Lateral Switches-

We carried out detailed calculations for photorefractive wave-mixing switches based on one of three crystals with high electro-optic coefficients, namely, BaTiO₃, Strontium Barium Niobate (SBN (0.75)), and Potasium Sodium Strontium Barium Niobate (KNSBN). A comparison of results for the three crystals shows that a 0_-cut BaTiO³ crystal is suitable for a longitudinal switch and requires a voltage of about 80 for a 2-mm-thick crystal to induce sufficient phase mismatch. The electrodes must be transparent for the incident and diffracted beams. A 45_-cut SBN (0.75) crystal, however, is suitable for a lateral switch and requires a voltage of about 150 for a 1-mm-wide crystal. The electrodes do not need to be transparent.     

Determination of trace moisture in hydrogen chloride gas by Karl Fischer titration

Moisture of several ppm in hydrogen chloride gas has been accurately determined by a new method using the Karl Fischer reagent, which hitherto had a limitation in accuracy because of a partial reaction with hydrogen chloride when direct titration was employed.The moisture in the sample gas was collected in a cold trap kept at about ?80 °C while the hydrogen chloride gas passed through and the frozen moisture was dissolved by pyridine-methanol (1:1) solvent. a KF Reagent of factoe: 0.35 mg H₂O/ml.Titration by the Karl Fischer reagent having the equivalency factor of, e.g., 0.5 mg H₂O/ml was carried out and the concentration of the moisture was calculated from the sample volume used.     

Stark effects on the phosphorescence spectra of p-benzoquinone

Stark effects on the phosphorescence spectra of p-benzoquinone have been studied in naphthalene crystals at temperatures between 1.7 and 30 K. The experimental data establish that the band splitting of 24 cm^?1 arises from a double minimum potential in the T₁ state.     

A new synthetic route to 2-substituted naphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione2-Substituted Naphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione

4,9-Dimethoxynaphtho[2,3-b]furan 9 was obtained in 91% yield via the reductive methylation of naphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione 2 . After treatment of 9 with butyllithium, the mixture was allowed to react with N,N-dimethylacetamide, followed by oxidization with cerium(IV) diammonium nitrate to give 2-acetylnaphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione 1 . 2-Formylnaphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione 13 and 2-trimethylsilyl-naphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione 14 were also obtained from 9 by a similar method. The halodesilylations of 14 easily gave 2-iodonaphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione 16 , 2-bromonaphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione 17 , and 2-chloronaphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione 18 in 82%, and 93% and 83% yield, respectively. Furthermore, the nitrodesilylation of 14 gave 2-nitronaphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione 3 in 77% yield.     

Making the liquid-phase catalytic hydrodechlorination of pce over Pd/C safer

Summary The hydrodechlorination of tetrachloroethylene in methanol (MeOH) over palladium catalysts on activated carbon (Pd/C) at 20°C and atmospheric pressure was rendered safer by using ethanol (EtOH), isopropanol (IPA) or water-alcohol mixtures as solvents. Adding water to MeOH was better than using EtOH or IPA since it resulted in a faster reaction and better stability of Pd/C, which could also be completely reactivated.     

Spongistatin synthetic studies. An efficient, second-generation construction of an advanced ABCD intermediate

[reaction: see text] A short, efficient, and stereocontrolled synthesis of (-)-4, an advanced ABCD subunit of the spongistatins, has been achieved. Central to the synthetic strategy is the multicomponent linchpin union of silyl dithianes with epoxides to access both the AB and CD fragments. Fragment coupling was then achieved via an efficient stereoselective aldol reaction. The linear sequence required 22 steps and proceeded in 4.0% overall yield.     

Efficient regioselective aldol condensation of methyl ketones promoted by organoaluminum compounds,and its application to muscone synthesis

Regioselective aldol condensation of 2-octanone and 2-butanone at the methyl side proceeded in high yields using a system of dialkylaluminum phenoxide/tertiary amine. The intramolecular aldol condensation of 2,15-hexadecanedione was carried out by the same system, especially di-i-butylaluminum phenoxide/pyridine, to give dehydromuscone in 65% yield. Its hydrogenation afforded muscone (3-methylcyclopentadecanone).     

Effect of Headgroups on Small‐Ion Permeability across Archaea‐Inspired Tetraether Lipid Membranes

This paper examines the effects of four different polar headgroups on small‐ion membrane permeability from liposomes comprised of Archaea‐inspired glycerolmonoalkyl glycerol tetraether (GMGT) lipids. We found that the membrane‐leakage rate across GMGT lipid membranes varied by a factor of ≤1.6 as a function of headgroup structure. However, the leakage rates of small ions across membranes comprised of commercial bilayer‐forming 1‐palmitoyl‐2‐oleoyl‐sn‐glycerol (PO) lipids varied by as much as 32‐fold within the same series of headgroups. These results demonstrate that membrane leakage from GMGT lipids is less influenced by headgroup structure, making it possible to tailor the structure of the polar headgroups on GMGT lipids while retaining predictable leakage properties of membranes comprised of these tethered lipids.
