An enrichment method of molybdenum on a cellulose nitrate resin for the determination by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry coupled with the resin suspension injection.

Cellulose derivative resin (CDR) suspensions containing resin particles of cellulose nitrate (CDR(CN)), cellulose acetate (CDR(CA)), or cellulose triacetate (CDR(CTA)) were prepared as the sorbent for resin suspension injection (RSI) electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS), in which fine resin particles holding a desired trace element were directly injected into the graphite tube as the suspension. To compare the sorption ability, the distribution ratios of the Mo(VI)-phenylfluorone complex were measured between the aqueous phase and the sorbents, including the CDRs mentioned above and the finely divided anion exchange resin (AR). The results showed that the sorption ability decreases in the following order: CDR(CN) > or = AR > CDR(CA) > or = CDR(CTA). It was concluded that CDR(CN) was able to extract more than 98% of Mo(VI), and was suitable for RSI-ETAAS as well as AR. CDR(CN) was used for the determination of Mo in NIES certified reference materials, No. 10 Rice flour-unpolished; the results showed fairly good agreements between the analytical values and the certified values.     

The absorptive pion-nucleus optical potential

We calculate s-wave and p-wave absorptive pion-nucleus optical potentials assuming that a pion is absorbed by a pair of nucleons. Employing a model which takes into account both a single nucleon absorption with nucleon-nucleon correlations and rescattering, we obtain simple analytic expressions for Im B₀ sid Im C₀ of the pion-nucleus optical potential. The off-shell effect on the s-wave pion absorption is examined and shown to be strongly modified by short range correlations. The result for the p-wave absorptive part Im C₀ clearly shows the importance of the tensor correlations. The enhanced nn emission after π^? absorption is shown to be related with a large p-wave πN scattering length a₃₃ via the tensor correlations.     

Self-assembled lipid nanotube hosts: The dimension control for encapsulation of nanometer-scale guest substances

Supramolecular nanotube hosts with precisely controlled inner or outer diameters have been synthesized by self-assembly of unsymmetrical bolaamphiphilic monomers or glucopyranosylamide lipids, respectively. Time-resolved fluorescent measurement using 8-anilinonaphthalene-1-sulfonate (ANS) as a probe revealed that the water confined in a cardanyl-β-D -glucopyranoside lipid nanotube has relatively lower solvent polarity corresponding to that of propanol than bulk water. Extensively developed hydrogen bond networks also characterize the confined water in comparison to the case in bulk water. Encapsulation ability of the glucopyranosylamide lipid nanotube has been examined by filling the lyophilized LNTs with gold or silver nanoparticles, ferritin, or magnetic crystals. Filling the unsymmetrical bolaamphiphile nanotube possessing positively charged inner surfaces with negatively charged polymer beads or ferritin proved to be successful without depending on capillary action. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Analytical application and spectrophotometric study of the scandium-indoferron complex

A new spectrophotometric method for microgram amounts of scandium with indoferron is described. The molar absorptivity is 960 l.mole⁻¹.mm⁻¹ at 600 nm. Uranium and the rare earths do not interfere, if present in amounts less than 50 μg. Scandium in silicate rocks can be determined by the procedure after separation of the scandium by a three-stage ion-exchange Chromatographic technique. The acid dissociation constants of indoferron and conditional formation constants of the 1:2 complex have been determined spectrophotometrically.     

Novel ring transformation reactions of xanthine derivatives

The novel ring transformation reactions were found in the reactions of 1,3,7,9-tetra-alkyl-8,9-dihydroxanthines and acetylenic compounds. The reaction of the dihydroxanthine with DMAD gave a propellane type compound and with methyl propiolate afforded the similar type compound and a pyrimido[4,5-b]diazepine derivative. The mechanism of these reactions was also discussed.     

Self-assembling structures of long-chain phenyl glucoside influenced by the introduction of double bonds

Four long-chain phenyl glucoside amphiphiles possessing a saturated or unsaturated long alkyl chain group as the self-assembling unit of a highly organized molecular architecture were synthesized. Their self-assembling properties were investigated by EF-TEM, SEM, CD, FT-IR, and XRD. Compound 2 possessing one double bond in the lipophilic portion showed twisted helical fibers, which formed a bilayered structure with a 3.59 nm period, while compound 3 showed the helical ribbons and left-handed nanotubular structures with 150-200 nm inner diameters and ca. 20 nm of wall. Very interestingly, compound 4 possessing three double bonds showed a nanotubular structure with ca. 70 nm of inner diameter through a helical ribbon, which formed a loose bilayered structure with 4.62 nm. These results indicate that self-assembling properties strongly depend on the number of cis double bonds.
