Synthesis and study of organic nitrates of heterofunctional series. 5. Synthesis of 3,3-bis(hydroxymethyl)oxetane mono- and dinitrates and 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propane-1,3-diol (pentaerythritol) mono- and dinitrates

New procedures were developed for the synthesis of 3,3-bis(hydroxymethyl)oxetane dinitrate (1) by O-nitration of the corresponding glycol (3) or its mononitrate (6), which were prepared by the reactions of 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propane-1,3-diol (pentaerythritol) (2) mono- (4) and dinitrates (5), respectively, with alkali. A new method was devised for the synthesis of compounds 4 and 5 by the reaction of tetraol 2 with concentrated HNO₃ in dichloroethane. The structures of compounds 1 and 6 were established by X-ray diffraction analysis.     

Synthesis and study of organic nitrates of the heterofunctional series

The first representative of organic nitrates of the oxazoline series, 4,4-dihydroxymethyl-2-(3-pyridyl)-2-oxazoline dinitrate, was synthesized by the reaction ofN-nicotinoyltri(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane trinitrate hydronitrate (1) with a solution of KOH in alcohol. The reactivities of compound1 andN-nicotinoylethanolamine nitrate (nicorandil) in the reaction of intramolecular heterocyclization were compared. Tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane dinitrate benzoate hydronitrate, the first representative of mixed nitric and carboxylic esters of aminopolyatomic alcohols, was obtained by the reaction of a mixture of concentrated HNO₃ and Ac₂O with 4,4-bis(hydroxymethyl)-2-phenyl-2-oxazoline. X-ray structural analysis demonstrated that the title compound exists in the crystal as two independent molecules. Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. O-Nitration of 4,4-bis(hydroxymethyl)-2-phenyl-2-oxazoline with conc. HNO₃ in the presence of Ac₂O was found to occur without ring-opening.
