Synthesis of 1-(4-substituted)benzyl-6-hydroxyisoquinolines with potential activity on NA+,K+-atpase

The synthesis of 1-(4-substituted)benzyl-6-hydroxyisoquinolines, to be evaluated in the displacement of the specific ³H-ouabain binding to Na⁺,K⁺-ATPase, is described. The key step involved a cyclization to the isoquinoline ring under Pictet-Gams conditions which was best performed with the 6-hydroxy group protected as the benzyl ether. When an unsaturated ester group was present in position 4 of the 1-benzyl group, this was best introduced before the cyclization step, since the IIeck reaction on 1-(4-bromobenzyl)-6-hydroxyisoquinoline ( 8 ) with acrylic acid derivatives was not successful in all cases.     

New versatile route to the synthesis of tetrahydro-beta-carbolines and tetrahydro-pyrano[3,4-b]indoles via an intramolecular Michael addition catalyzed by InBr3

A simple multistep synthetic strategy to 4-substituted 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-beta-carboline and 1,3,4,9-tetrahydro-pyrano[3,4-b]indole derivatives starting from commercially available indole 2-carboxylic acid (5) is described. The final intramolecular Michael addition promoted by catalytic amount of InBr(3) (5-10 mol %) provided the expected polycyclic compounds in excellent yields (up to 97%) both in anhydrous organic and aqueous media.     

Can simple enones be useful partners for the catalytic stereoselective alkylation of indoles?

A new catalytic system for the first example of enantioselective Friedel-Crafts-type (FC) addition of indoles to simple enones is described. The use of an equimolar amount of chiral [Al(salen)Cl] and 2,6-lutidine (10 mol %) was found to be effective in promoting the conjugate addition of indoles to (E)-arylcrotyl ketones, furnishing the corresponding beta-indolyl ketones in excellent yield and high enantioselectivity (ee up to 89%). The role of the base was investigated through spectroscopic as well as computational analyses, which suggested that in situ formation of a new chiral (base.[Al(salen)]) complex was operating under our reaction conditions. In particular, a stable cationic [Al(salen)] hexacoordinate trans complex with the additive base and the enone is suggested as being responsible for the stereocontrolled reaction. Finally, detailed monitoring of the reaction course was carried out showing that a conventional FC pathway induced by [Al(salen)Cl] acting as a Lewis acid is operating.     

Experimental confirmation of matched bends

Modal conversion between the fundamental mode and the first-order (leaky) mode has been experimentally investigated in high-index-contrast integrated-optical bent waveguides. The matched bend condition has been experimentally confirmed on cascaded bends, and the effect of both matched and unmatched bends on Y branches has been investigated. Good agreement between theoretical predictions and experimental results for both monomode and multimode waveguides is achieved. It is demonstrated that, in bent waveguides, the modal conversion between the fundamental mode and the first (leaky) mode can be accurately controlled to avoid additional losses and transfer function impairments.     

Synthesis of phenyl-substituted 2H-3,4-dihydro-3-aminomethyl-1,4-benzoxazines. Intermediates for 1H-2,3,3a,4-tetrahydroimidazo[5,1-c][1,4]benzoxazin-1-one derivatives. Part II

The synthesis of 2H-3, 4-dihydro-3-aminomethyl-1, 4-benzoxazines substituted by one phenyl group in the 2, 3 or α-position is reported. The two diastereoisomers of the 2-phenyl-derivative were independently synthesized from ethyl trans-3-phenylglycidate by a stereospecific route. A previous attempt at the synthesis of these same compounds gave rise to an unexpected aliphatic-aromatic ketone rearrangement.     

Continuously tunable 1 byte delay in coupled-resonator optical waveguides

A reconfigurable coupled-resonator optical waveguide made of a few directly coupled ring resonators is employed to control the delay of data streams modulated at tens of gigabits per second. A delay of 8 bit lengths (1 optical byte) with a small pulse broadening and 1 dB/bit fractional loss is achieved by using only eight rings. The limiting role of waveguide loss and spurious backreflections is experimentally investigated. The high storage efficiency (1 bit/ring) of the device enables an easy, reliable, hitless, and relatively low-power-consuming management of the delay. A higher storage efficiency is demonstrated to be associated to an unavoidable higher pulse distortion.     

Measurement of the frequency response induced by electrostriction in optical fibers

Accurate measurements of the frequency response of the nonlinear refractive index induced by the combined effects of Kerr nonlinearity with electrostrictional excitation of acoustic waves in optical fibers are presented. A detailed experimental investigation of both standard (zero-dispersion wavelength,lambda(0) approximately 1.31microm) and dispersion-shifted (lambda(0)=1.55microm) single-mode fibers showed the presence of several resonant peaks induced by the electrostrictive nonlinearity in the fiber structure. This investigation has provided better insight into the frequency behavior of the electrostriction-induced acoustic waves in optical fibers.     

Reconfigurable silicon filter with continuous bandwidth tunability

We present the design and the fabrication of compact tunable silicon-on-insulator bandpass filters based on the integration of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with ring resonators and activated via thermo-optic phase shifters. The proposed architecture provides wide filter bandwidth tunability from 10% to 90% of the free spectral range preserving the filter off-band rejection. Possible applications are channel subset selection in wavelength division multiplexing optical systems, adaptive filtering to signal bandwidth, and reconfigurable filters for gridless networking.
