A fast atom bombardment mass spectrometric analysis of crown ether complexes [1]

Analyses of crown ether complexes of alkali metal ions and characterization of the complexes formed inm-nitrobenzyl alcohol have been carried out by fast atom bombardment (FAB) mass spectrometry. By using m-nitrobenzyl alcohol as a matrix for measurements, the stoichiometry of the complexes was assessed on the basis of the observed FAB peaks. In addition, the formation of crown ether-alkali metal complexes at a 2 : 1 molar ratio was enhanced by increasing the ionic radius of the metal ion in agreement with previous observations. On these grounds, FAB mass spectrometry may provide a rapid means for investigation of the complexation behavior of crown ethers and the stoichiometry of the complexes.     

High-performance liquid chromatographic method for determining trichothecene mycotoxins by post-column fluorescence derivatization

The method described here is based on a separation of deoxynivalenol, nivalenol and fusarenon-X on a C18 column using aqueous acetonitrile, and successive post-column fluorescence derivatization involving an alkaline decomposition to form formaldehyde and modified Hantzsch reaction with methyl acetoacetate and ammonium acetate (lambda ex = 370 nm and lambda em = 460 nm). By this method, 5-10 ng of the standard trichothecenes could be determined. By employing a clean-up procedure with a florisil column and a Sep-Pak CN cartridge, 61.4-96.9% recoveries were obtained for deoxynivalenol and nivalenol added to corn, wheat and barley at concentration levels of 0.05-1 ppm.     

Wavelength dependence of polyyne preparation by liquid-phase laser ablation using pellet targets

The amount of polyynes produced by Nd:YAG laser (355, 532, and 1064 nm) ablation of fullerene and graphite pellet targets was the largest for 1064 nm ablation, contrary to the powder target in the previous report. This result is believed to come from the difference in the main polyyne-production area in liquids in the optical cell, depending on the pellet and powder targets.     

Gauss Optics and Gauss Sum on an Optical Phenomena

In the previous article (Found. Phys. Lett. 16:325–341, 2003), we showed that a reciprocity of the Gauss sums is connected with the wave and particle complementary. In this article, we revise the previous investigation by considering a relation between the Gauss optics and the Gauss sum based upon the recent studies of the Weil representation for a finite group.     

Generalized Weierstrass Relations and Frobenius Reciprocity

This article investigates local properties of the further generalized Weierstrass relations for a spin manifold S immersed in a higher dimensional spin manifold M from the viewpoint of the study of submanifold quantum mechanics. We show that the kernel of a certain Dirac operator defined over S, which we call a submanifold Dirac operator, gives the data of the immersion. In the derivation, the simple Frobenius reciprocity of Clifford algebras S and M plays an important role.

Preparation and characterization of indium tin oxide films formed by oxygen ion beam assisted deposition

Indium tin oxide (ITO) films were produced by low-energy oxygen ion beam assisted electron-beam evaporation. The dependence of surface morphology, electrical and optical properties on evaporation rate, oxygen ion beam energy and density, as well as substrate temperatures was characterized by atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Hall-effect and optical transmittance measurements. The results show that high-quality ITO films (resistivity of 7.0×10⁻⁴ Ω cm, optical transmittance above 85% at wavelength 550 nm, surface roughness of 0.6 nm in root mean square) can be obtained at room temperature.
