Permeability,permselectivity, and penetrant‐induced plasticization in fluorinated polyimides studied by positron lifetime measurements

The ortho‐positronium (o‐Ps) lifetime τ₃ and its intensity I₃ in various fluorinated polyimides were determined by the positron annihilation technique and were studied with the spin–lattice relaxation time T₁ and the propylene permeability, solubility, diffusivity, and permselectivity for propylene/propane in them. τ₃, I₃, and the distribution of τ₃ changed when the bulky moieties in the polyimides were changed. The polyimides, having both large τ₃ and I₃ values, exhibited a short T₁ and a high permeability with a low permselectivity. The propylene permeability and diffusivity were exponentially correlated with the product of I₃ and the average free‐volume hole size estimated from τ₃. In highly plasticized states induced by the sorption of propylene, the permeability increased with the propylene pressure in excellent agreement with the change in the free‐volume hole properties probed by o‐Ps. The large and broad distribution of the free‐volume holes and increased local chain mobility for the 2,2‐bis(3,4‐decarboxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane dianhydride‐based polyimides are thought to be important physical properties for promoting penetrant‐induced plasticization. These results suggest that o‐Ps is a powerful probe of not only the free‐volume holes but also the corresponding permeation mechanism and penetrant‐induced plasticization phenomenon. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The first total synthesis of (+)?3-deoxyaphidicolin, a selective inhibitor of eukaryotic DNA polymerase α, has been completed efficiently and stereoselectively starting from 1-abietic acid.     

DNA-bleomycin interaction: Nucleotide sequence-specific binding and cleavage of DNA by bleomycin

Biosynthetic intermediates and synthetic analogues of bleomycin (BLM) have been investigated for their metal binding, dioxygen activation, and DNA cleavage. Molecular O₂ was activated by the Fe(II) complex of a synthetic model ligand. Nucleotide sequence specificities in DNA cleavage by the BLM-Fe(II) and deglyco-BLM-Fe(II) complexes were almost identical. It has been shown that (1) the β-aminoalanine-pyrimidine-β-hydroxyhistidine portion of BLM is essential for the metal binding and dioxygen activation and (2) the bithiazole moiety contributes to the specific binding to guanine base of DNA.     

Hexakis(2-pyridyl)- and hexakis(3-pyridyl)[3]radialene: novel,water-soluble [3]radialenes with potential utility for supramolecular chemistry

The titled [3]radialenes are the first, water-soluble hexaaryl[3]radialenes with considerably high electron affinity, their alkali metal reduction giving rise to anion-radicals and dianions stepwise as fairly stable species in degassed tetrahydrofuran.     

Studies on furan derivatives. XII. Nucleophilic substitution of methyl 5-nitro-2-furancarboxylate. Preparation of methyl 5-phenoxy-2-furancarboxylates

Twenty one methyl 5-phenoxy-2-furancarboxylates prepared from the reaction of methyl 5-nitro-2-furan-carboxylate with phenoxides via displacement of the nitro group. In the reaction of potassium 2-nitrophen-oxide with methyl 5-nitro-2-furancarboxylate at 110°-120°, 2,2′-dinitrodiphenyl ether was obtained as a main product.     

High n-value phases in the complex bismuth oxides with layered structure,Bi2CaNan−2NbnO3n+3

Complex bismuth oxides with layered structure are prepared with a series of compositions in the system Bi₂CaNb₂O₉-NaNbO₃. It is found by X-ray powder diffraction that each compound is composed of more than two phases, which are described by a formula Bi₂CaNa_n?2Nb_nO_3n+3, e.g., in the sample with the nominal composition Bi₂CaNb₂O₉ · 8NaNbO₃, the phases with n = 6 to 8 appear predominantly. These phases are closely intergrown to each other. Moreover, high-resolution electron microscopy reveals that microsyntactic intergrowth frequently occurs in the phases with n > 5. The occurrence of the latter intergrowth is explained in terms of the bond length obtained.

The chiral half-ester 2 obtained by asymmetric hydrolysis of the symmetric diester 1 with pig liver esterase has been shown to be a versatile synthon for various chiral cyclohexane derivatives.
