New Synthetic Method for Bicyclic Compounds Through a Sequence of Ene-Type Chlorination,Palladium Catalyzed Dehydrochlorination,and Intramolecular Diels-Alder Reaction

A sequence of ene-type chlorination, palladium catalyzed dehydrochlorination, and the intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction afforded a new method for conversion of prenyl derivatives into bicyclic compounds.     

A New Convenient Synthesis of α-Arylpropionic Acid Esters and α-Arylpropionitriles

Various types of α-arylpropionic acid esters were effectively obtained by the coupling reaction of aryl Grignard reagents and α-bromopropionic acid esters in the presence of nickel catalysts. α-Arylpropionitriles, precursors of α-arylpropionic acids, were also synthesized by the reaction of α-methanesulfonyloxypropionitrile and arylcopper reagents prepared from equimolar amount of arylmagnesium halides and copper(I) bromide.     

From Fish Waste to Value: An Overview of the Sustainable Recovery of Omega-3 for Food Supplements

The disposal of food waste is a current and pressing issue, urging novel solutions to implement sustainable waste management practices. Fish leftovers and their processing byproducts represent a significant portion of the original fish, and their disposal has a high environmental and economic impact. The utilization of waste as raw materials for the production of different classes of biofuels and high-value chemicals, a concept known as “biorefinery”, is gaining interest in a vision of circular economy and zero waste policies. In this context, an interesting route of valorization is the extraction of omega-3 fatty acids (ω-3 FAs) for nutraceutical application. These fatty acids, such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) have received attention over the last decades due to their beneficial effects on human health. Their sustainable production is a key process for matching the increased market demand while reducing the pressure on marine ecosystems and lowering the impact of waste production. The high resale value of the products makes this waste a powerful tool that simultaneously protects the environment and benefits the global economy. This review aims to provide a complete overview of the sustainable exploitation of fish waste to recover ω-3 FAs for food supplement applications, covering composition, storage, and processing of the raw material.     

On the Essential Features of Metastability: Tunnelling Time and Critical Configurations

We consider Metropolis Markov chains with finite state space and transition probabilities of the form $$P(\eta ,\eta ')=q(\eta ,\eta ')e^{- \beta [H(\eta ') - H(\eta)]_+}$$ for given energy function H and symmetric Markov kernel q. We propose a simple approach to determine the asymptotic behavior, for large β, of the first hitting time to the ground state starting from a particular class of local minima for H called metastable states. We separate the asymptotic behavior of the transition time from the determination of the tube of typical paths realizing the transition. This approach turns out to be useful when the determination of the tube of typical paths is too difficult, as for instance in the case of conservative dynamics. We analyze the structure of the saddles introducing the notion of “essentiality” and describing essential saddles in terms of “gates.” As an example we discuss the case of the 2D Ising Model in the degenerate case of integer ${\tfrac{{2j}}{h}}$ .     

Crucigasterins A-E, antimicrobial amino alcohols from the Mediterranean colonial ascidian Pseudodistoma crucigaster

Five new unsaturated 2-amino-3-alcohols, crucigasterins A-E (2-6), were isolated together with known related compound 7 from the Mediterranean ascidian Pseudodistoma crucigaster and characterised as diacetyl derivatives (2a-6a) by spectroscopic methods. The threo-relative configuration of the amino alcohol portion was inferred by NOE analysis of the oxazolidinone derivative of crucigasterin A (2) as well as by ¹³C NMR comparison with synthetic threo and erythro model compounds. The co-occurring metabolites were assumed to have the same relative configuration as 2 by comparison of the diagnostic carbon value of C-1. The absolute stereochemistry of compound 7 that had not been previously reported was determined by applying the modified Mosher’s method on the corresponding N-acetyl derivative. The same absolute configuration was suggested for the other co-occurring crucigasterins by biogenetic considerations. Antibacterial and antifungal activities of selected crucigasterins were also evaluated.     

Gold-catalyzed intramolecular hydroamination of α-amino allenamides as a route to enantiopure 2-vinylimidazolidinones

An efficient gold-catalyzed procedure for the preparation of 2-vinylimidazolidinones has been developed. The starting materials for the synthesis of these compounds are α-amino allenamides which undergo heterocyclization by means of nucleophilic attack of the amino group on the inside double bond of the 1,2-diene moiety. This is the first example of a gold-catalyzed cyclization on allene substrates bearing an amido group which, however, resulted inactive.
