Nano palladium supported on high‐surface‐area metal–organic framework MIL‐101: an efficient catalyst for Sonogashira coupling of aryl and heteroaryl bromides with alkynes

Palladium nanoparticle‐incorporated metal–organic framework MIL‐101 (Pd/MIL‐101) was successfully synthesized and characterized using X‐ray diffraction, nitrogen physisorption, X‐ray photoelectron, UV–visible and infrared spectroscopies, and transmission electron microscopy. The characterization techniques confirmed high porosity and high surface area of MIL‐101 and high stability of nano‐size palladium particles. Pd/MIL‐101 nanocomposite was investigated for the Sonogashira cross‐coupling reaction of aryl and heteroaryl bromides with various alkynes under copper‐free conditions. The reusability of the catalyst was tested for up to four cycles without any significant loss in catalytic activity. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Rapid and efficient synthesis of optically active pyrazoles under solvent-free conditions

2-Formyl glycals undergo rapid condensation with arylhydrazines under solvent-free conditions to give the corresponding optically pure 4-substituted pyrazoles in good yields with high selectivity. The stereochemistry of the products was assigned by various NMR experiments.     

Friedel-Crafts alkylation of indoles with epoxides catalyzed by nanocrystalline titanium(IV) oxide

Friedel-Crafts alkylation of indoles with epoxides to afford 3-alkyl indole derivatives at room temperature with moderate to good yields and high regioselectivity using nanocrystalline titanium(IV) oxide catalyst is described.     

Construction of spiro[5.5]undecanes containing a quaternary carbon atom adjacent to a spirocentre via an Ireland ester Claisen rearrangement and RCM reaction sequence. Total syntheses of (±)-α-chamigrene, (±)-β-chamigrene and (±)-laurencenone C

Starting from cyclohexanecarboxylic acid, a combination of an Ireland ester Claisen rearrangement and RCM reactions was exploited for an efficient construction of spiro[5.5]undecanes containing a quaternary carbon atom adjacent to the spirocentre and the methodology was extended to complete total syntheses of three chamigrenes.     

CAN mediated cyclization of epoxypropyl cinnamyl ethers: a facile stereoselective synthesis of tetrahydropyran derivatives

Cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate in substoichiometric amounts, promotes the intramolecular cyclization of epoxypropyl cinnamyl ethers to the corresponding 3,4,5-trisubstituted tetrahydropyran derivatives in moderate to good yields.     

Chiral self-dimerization of vanadium complexes on a SiO2 surface: the first heterogeneous catalyst for asymmetric 2-naphthol coupling

The self-dimerized chiral assembly of vanadium-Schiff-base complexes was found to occur on a SiO2 surface and to be the first heterogeneous catalyst for the asymmetric oxidative coupling of 2-naphthol with 100% selectivity and 90% enantioselectivity.     

Investigation into new materials for optical devices: the miscibility and solvent effects of azobenzene derivative blends

With the increasing demand for novel devices with optical applications the search for new materials to data store and process becomes a priority. By introducing blends, tailor made properties and low cost give added advantage. Miscibility is an essential requirement for a new material, this research thus involves miscibility studies of poly(4‐(N‐(2‐methacryloyloxyethyl)‐N‐ethylamino)‐4′‐nitroazobenzene)₉₀‐co‐(methyl methacrylate)₁₀, (azobenzene derivative) with polymethyl‐methacrylate (PMMA), polyvinylacetate (PVAc) and polyvinylchloride (PVC) prepared in tetrahydrofuran (THF), and/or dimethylformamide (DMF) and/or dichloromethane (CH₂Cl₂). The glass transitions, solvent and varying molecular weight effect were investigated, since these all primarily influence the miscibility. THF was found to encourage miscibility at specific compositions of PVAc and PVC blends. However, with CH₂Cl₂ and DMF immiscibility is encouraged. The Fox–Flory equation was applied to the blends analyzing the PVC blends in DMF as deviations from ideality. Different molecular weights of PMMA were identified as immiscible regardless of solvent. PMMA's lower solubility in THF and CH₂Cl₂ compared to the azobenzene derivative, displayed the existence of PMMA islands. In all blends the favorable and unfavorable interactions between polymer–solvent–polymer systems are considered. Application of sodium metaperiodate for the determination of ribavirin in pharmaceutical formulations

Three simple and sensitive visible spectrophotometric methods (A-C) have been described for the assay of ribavirin either in pure form or in pharmaceutical formulations. They are based on the oxidation of ribavirin with excess sodium metaperiodate and estimating either the products formed (dialdehyde with MBTH, method A; iodate with metol-sulphanilamide, in the presence of Mo(VI) and iodide, method B) or the amount of periodate consumed (celestine blue in the presence of telurium (IV), method C). All of the variables have been optimized and the reaction mechanisms presented. The concentration measurements are reproducible within a R.S.D. of 1.0%. Recoveries are 99.2-101.2%.     

Design and synthesis of novel fluoropeptidomimetics as potential mimics of the transition state during peptide hydrolysis

alpha-Fluoroamino acids were targeted in our ongoing efforts to design novel fluoropeptidomimetics (1) as potential protease inhibitors. alpha-Fluoroglycine derivative (2) and alpha-fluoro-beta-aminoethanethiol derivatives (3-9) were synthesized for the first time en route to obtain the peptidomimetic moiety 1. The stability of 2-9 was investigated under organic as well as aqueous conditions. The stability of 3-9 under acidic and basic conditions, the effect of substitution at C-2 position, and potential biological activities are discussed.
