Experiments by Gittings, Bandyopadhyay and Durian (Europhys. Lett. 65, 414 (2004)) demonstrate that light possesses a higher probability to propagate in the liquid phase of a foam due to total
reflection. The authors term this observation photon channelling which we investigate in this article theoretically. We first
derive a central relation in the work of Gitting et al. without any free parameters. It links the photon's path-length fraction f in the liquid phase to the liquid fraction ɛ. We then construct two-dimensional Voronoi foams, replace the cell edges by
channels to represent the liquid films and simulate photon paths according to the laws of ray optics using transmission and
reflection coefficients from Fresnel's formulas. In an exact honeycomb foam, the photons show superdiffusive behavior. It
becomes diffusive as soon as disorder is introduced into the foams. The dependence of the diffusion constant on channel width
and refractive index is explained by a one-dimensional random-walk model. It contains a photon channelling state that is crucial
for the understanding of the numerical results. At the end, we shortly comment on the observation that photon channelling

Objective
To determine the accuracy of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), perfusion MR imaging (MRP), or volume modeling in distinguishing tumor progression from radiation injury following radiotherapy for brain metastasis.Methods
Twenty-six patients with 33 intra-axial metastatic lesions who underwent MRS (n=41) with or without MRP (n=32) after cranial irradiation were retrospectively studied. The final diagnosis was based on histopathology (n=4) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) follow-up with clinical correlation (n=29). Cho/Cr (choline/creatinine), Cho/NAA (choline/N-acetylaspartate), Cho/nCho (choline/contralateral normal brain choline) ratios were retrospectively calculated for the multi-voxel MRS. Relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV), relative peak height (rPH) and percentage of signal-intensity recovery (PSR) were also retrospectively derived for the MRPs. Tumor volumes were determined using manual segmentation method and analyzed using different volume progression modeling. Different ratios or models were tested and plotted on the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC), with their performances quantified as area under the ROC curve (AUC). MRI follow-up time was calculated from the date of initial radiotherapy until the last MRI or the last MRI before surgical diagnosis.Results
Median MRI follow-up was 16 months (range: 2-33). Thirty percent of lesions (n=10) were determined to be radiation injury; 70% (n=23) were determined to be tumor progression. For the MRS, Cho/nCho had the best performance (AUC of 0.612), and Cho/nCho >1.2 had 33% sensitivity and 100% specificity in predicting tumor progression. For the MRP, rCBV had the best performance (AUC of 0.802), and rCBV >2 had 56% sensitivity and 100% specificity. The best volume model was percent increase (AUC of 0.891); 65% tumor volume increase had 100% sensitivity and 80% specificity.Conclusion
Cho/nCho of MRS, rCBV of MRP, and percent increase of MRI volume modeling provide the best discrimination of intra-axial metastatic tumor progression from radiation injury for their respective modalities. Cho/nCho and rCBV appear to have high specificities but low sensitivities. In contrast, percent volume increase of 65% can be a highly sensitive and moderately specific predictor for tumor progression after radiotherapy. Future incorporation of 65% volume increase as a pretest selection criterion may compensate for the low sensitivities of MRS and MRP. 相似文献3.

The impact of heparinoid characteristics on model surfaces obtained from immobilization of sole sulfate groups as well as sulfated glycosides, sulfated cellulose, and definite heparin has been investigated. The obtained layers were physico-chemically characterized regarding film thickness, chemical composition, wettability, and surface morphology. Antithrombin adsorption, studied by fluorescence labeling, revealed a strong dependence on the presence of glycosidic structures and on the molecular weight of the grafted saccharide. On contact with whole blood, the coatings resulted in a diminished plasmatic and cellular coagulation in vitro, which did not reflect well the antithrombin binding. The use of infrared laser-assisted fluorination to release oxygen from milligram quantities of silicates or other oxide mineral grains is a well-established technique. However, relatively few studies have reported the optimisation of this procedure for oxygen-17 isotope measurements. We describe here details of an analytical system using infrared (10 μm) laser-assisted fluorination, in conjunction with a dual inlet mass spectrometer of high resolving power ( approximately 250) to provide (17)O and (18)O oxygen isotope measurements from 0.5-2 mg of silicates or other oxide mineral grains. Respective precisions (1) of typically 0.08 and 0.04 per thousand are obtained for the complete analytical procedure. Departures from the mass-dependent oxygen isotope fractionation line are quantified by Delta(17)O; our precision (1) of such measurements on individual samples is shown to be +/-0.024 per thousand. In turn, this permits the offset between parallel, mass-dependent fractionation lines to be characterised to substantially greater precision than has been possible hitherto. Application of this system to investigate the (17)O versus (18)O relationship for numerous terrestrial whole-rock and mineral samples, of diverse geological origins and age, indicates that the complete data set may be described by a single, mass-dependent fractionation line of slope 0.5244+/- 0.00038 (standard error). Fast atom bombardment, combined with high-energy collision-induced tandem mass spectrometry, has been used to investigate gas-phase metal-ion interactions with captopril, enalaprilat and lisinopril, all angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors.Suggestions for the location of metal-binding sites are presented. For captopril, metal binding occurs most likely at both the sulphur and the nitrogen atom. For enalaprilat and lisinopril, binding preferably occurs at the amine nitrogen. It is shown by use of [2-14C]betaine that the formation of phenylmethylethers from phenoles and betaine takes place by methyl-group transfer from the trimethylammoniumgroup of the betaine. The formation of the by-products phenoxy acetic acid, trimethylamine and carbon dioxide is discussed.

Thrombosis and restenosis are the main causes of failure of cardiovascular and other blood-contacting biomedical devices. It is recognized that rapid endothelialization is a promising method for preventing these complications. Convincing evidence in vivo has further emerged that the vascular homing of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) contributes to rapid endothelial regeneration. This study deals with improving the hemocompatibility and enhancing EPC colonization of titanium by covalently bonding PEG(600) or PEG(4000), then end-grafting of an anti-CD34 antibody. For this, a chemically hydroxylated titanium surface was aminosilanized, which was further used for covalent grafting of polyethylene glycol and the antibody. The grafting efficiency was verified in each step. In vitro platelet adhesion analysis confirmed superior hemocompatibility of the modified surface over the control. Affinity of EPC to the surface and inhibition of smooth muscle cell adhesion, two prerequisites for endothelialization, are demonstrated in in vitro cell culture. While the coating selectively stimulates EPC adhesion, its antifouling properties prevent formation of an extracellular matrix and proliferation of the cells. Additional affinity for matrix proteins in the coating is considered for further studies. Potent inhibitory effect on macrophage activation and the relative stability of the coating render this technique applicable. 相似文献

Abstract. Wake-induced oscillations on bundled conductors of overhead transmission lines are investigated. These oscillations are due to the leeward conductor lying in the wake of the windward one. We consider a twin horizontal bundle of overhead lines. First of all, the critical wind velocity (bifurcation point) of incipient flutter is identified [3, 4]. A nonlinear analysis is adopted to investigate the post-bifurcational behaviour of the oscillations. Using, if necessary a reduction to the center manifold, and an additional normal form transformation we obtain amplitude equations which can be analyzed qualitatively with regard to the unfolding parameters.Sommario: Vengono studiate le oscillazioni indotte dal distacco di scia in fasci di conduttori di linee di trasmissione sospese. Queste oscillazioni sono presenti nel conduttore sottovento che giace nella scia del conduttore sopravvento. In particolare viene considerato il caso di una coppia di conduttori disposti orizzontalmente. Prima di tutto, viene identificata la velocità critica del vento (punto di biforcazione) dovuta al flutter incipiente [3, 4]. Viene utilizzata un'analisi non lineare al fine di valutare il comportamento post-biforcativo delle oscillazioni. Usando, se necessario, una riduzione alla varietà centrale e un'addizionale applicazione del metodo della forma normale, si ottengono equazioni nelle ampiezze che possono essere analizzate in modo qualitativo con riferimento ai parametri essenziali. 相似文献

The effects on the radiation response of Harwell polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) dosimeters of dose-rate, radiation type, temperature during irradiation and post-irradiation storage, and post-irradiation stability, are of importance to the operators of commercial irradiation facilities.

Fibrinogen is a major plasma protein. Previous investigations of structural changes of fibrinogen due to adsorption are mostly based on indirect evidence after its desorption, whereas our measurements were performed on fibrinogen in its adsorbed state. Specific enzyme-linked immunosorption experiments showed that the amount of adsorbed fibrinogen increased as the surface became more hydrophobic. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) investigations revealed the trinodular shape of fibrinogen molecules adsorbed on hydrophilic surfaces, whereas all of the molecules appeared globular on hydrophobic surfaces. The distribution of secondary structures in adsorbed fibrinogen was quantified by in situ Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) analysis. Substrates of identical chemical bulk composition but different surface hydrophobicity permit direct comparison among them. Adsorption properties of fibrinogen are different for each degree of hydrophobicity. Although there is some increase of turn structure and decrease of β-sheet structure, the secondary structure of adsorbed fibrinogen on hydrophilic surface turned out to be rather similar to that of the protein in solution phase with a major -helix content. Hydrophilic surfaces exhibit superior blood compatibility as required for medical applications. 相似文献
