Latex Fractionation by Sedimentation and Colloidal Crystallization: The Case of Poly(styrene-co-acrylamide)

Poly(styrene-co-acrylamide) (PS-AAM) latex was prepared, fractionated by sedimentation under gravity, and characterized by PCS, infrared spectra, secondary and backscattered electron imaging in the scanning electron microscope, and electron spectroscopy imaging in an analytical transmission electron microscope. Three latex fractions were obtained. The lower fraction was opalescent and its particles were the more uniform, concerning size, chemical composition, and topochemical features. This lower fraction was still further fractionated by zonal centrifugation in a density gradient, yielding two fractions with similar macrocrystal-forming abilities but different sizes and chemical compositions. These results confirm those previously obtained for the PS-HEMA latex. Copyright 2000 Academic Press.

It has been demonstrated that the output from a discharge pumped KrF laser (249 nm) is capable of ionizing a variety of molecules. The nature and yield of ions generated in this process, which have been identified by time of flight mass spectrometry, exhibit a striking intensity dependence.     

Separation of isochromatics and isopachics using a Faraday rotator in dynamic-holographic photoelasticity

A method is presented that allows the simultaneous separation of isochromatic- and isopachic-fringe patterns for transient-plane stress problems. Isopachic fringes are obtained by means of holography with a Faraday cell and a pulsed ruby laser flashing dual pulses. As usual isochromatic whole-order fringes are recorded in a circular-light polariscope. The shock generator (air-gun) and its synchronizing system with the ruby laser is described. The procedure is applied to the recording of the isochromatic- and isopachic-fringe patterns in a disk under radial dynamic loads.
