Unsteady, axisymmetric stagnation flow about a circular cylinderis examined when the far-field flow is a periodic function oftime with a fixed time average and an oscillatory part of prescribedamplitude and frequency. Solutions are computed for arbitraryvalues of the Reynolds number, quantifying the effects of surfacecurvature, and a frequency parameter based on the period ofthe far-field flow. It is found that solutions remain regularand periodic provided that the far-field amplitude lies belowa critical value. Above this value, solutions terminate in afinite-time singularity. The blow-up time is delayed by increasingthe curvature of the surface. These results are corroboratedby asymptotic predictions valid in the limits of small and largeamplitude and frequency. For large Reynolds number, the problemreduces to the two-dimensional stagnation-point flow againsta plane wall studied by previous authors.  相似文献

S -nitrosothiols have many biological activities and may act as nitric oxide (NO) carriers and donors, prolonging NO half-life in vivo. In spite of their great potential as therapeutic agents, most S -nitrosothiols are too unstable to isolate. We have shown that the S -nitroso adduct of N -acetylcysteine (SNAC) can be synthesized directly in aqueous and polyethylene glycol (PEG) 400 matrix by using a reactive gaseous (NO/O2) mixture. Spectral monitoring of the S–N bond cleavage showed that SNAC, synthesized by this method, is relatively stable in nonbuf-fered aqueous solution at 25°C in the dark and that its stability is greatly increased in PEG matrix, resulting in a 28-fold decrease in its initial rate of thermal decomposition. Irradiation with UV light (λ= 333 nm) accelerated the rate of decomposition of SNAC to NO in both matrices, indicating that SNAC may find use for the photogeneration of NO. The quantum yield for SNAC decomposition decreased from 0.65 ± 0.15 in aqueous solution to 0.047 ± 0.005 in PEG 400 matrix. This increased stability in PEG matrix was assigned to a cage effect promoted by the PEG microenvironment that increases the rate of geminated radical pair recombination in the homolytic S–N bond cleavage process. This effect allowed for the storage of SNAC in PEG at −20°C in the dark for more than 10 weeks with negligible decomposition. Such stabilization may represent a viable option for the synthesis, storage and handling of S -nitrosothiol solutions for biomedical applications.  相似文献

The effect of four different polymers on the precipitation of calcium sulfate was investigated in the present work. The degree of inhibition was estimated from measurements of the calcium ion activity and from specific solution conductivity measurements in the supersaturated solutions during the course of the precipitation process. The effects of polyacrylic acid (PAA, three different polymers with average molecular weight 2000, 50,000, and 240,000, respectively) and of a co-polymer of PAA with polystyrene sulfonic acid (PSA, average molecular weight<20,000) were investigated with respect to their effect on the kinetics of spontaneous precipitation of calcium sulfate salts. The results of the kinetics experiments suggested that the spontaneous precipitation from supersaturated calcium sulfate solutions at 25 degrees C yielded exclusively calcium sulfate dihydrate (gypsum) both in the absence and in the presence of the polymeric additives. The induction times, preceding the formation of the solid increased in all cases in the presence of the polymeric additives. Polymer concentrations as low as 2.0 ppm increased induction time from practically zero to 10 min. The rates of precipitation were reduced according to the solutions content in the polymers added and precipitation was completely suppressed in the presence of 6.0 ppm of the polymers tested, depending on their molecular weight. The lower the molecular weight of PAA, the more efficient was the threshold inhibition and the stronger the reduction of the rates of spontaneous precipitation. PSA yielded the poorest inhibition efficiency in comparison with the PAA, possibly because of the relatively lower affinity of the sulfonate groups for the calcium ions of the surface of the solid forming. The kinetics results analysis assuming Langmuir-type adsorption of the polymeric molecules on the growing supercritical gypsum nuclei showed different affinity for the polymers tested in agreement with the respective inhibition efficiency, in the order: PAA1>PAA2>PSA>PAA3. The presence of the polymers in the supersaturated solutions resulted in modification of the precipitated gypsum crystals morphology.  相似文献

The precipitation of calcium carbonate as a binding salt for the consolidation of loose sand formations is a promising approach. The heterogeneous nucleation and growth of calcite were investigated in supersaturated solutions. The ionic activities in the solutions tested were selected so that they included both supersaturations in which crystal growth took place only following the introduction of seed particles and supersaturations in which precipitation occurred spontaneously past the lapse of induction times. In the latter case the supersaturation conditions were sufficiently low to allow the measurement of induction times preceding the onset of precipitation. The stability domain of the calcium carbonate system was established at pH 8.50, 25 degrees C, measuring the induction times in the range between 30 min and 2 h. The rates of precipitation following the destabilization of the solutions were measured from the pH and/or concentration-time profiles. The induction times were inversely proportional and rates proportional to the solution supersaturation as expected. The high-order dependence of the rates of precipitation on the solution supersaturation suggested a polynuclear growth mechanism. Fitting of the induction time-supersaturation data according to this model yielded a value of 64 mJ/m2 for the surface energy of the calcite nucleus. In the concentration domain corresponding to stable supersaturated solutions, seeded growth experiments at constant supersaturation showed a second-order dependence on the rates of crystal growth of calcite seed crystals. Inoculation of the stable supersaturated solutions with quartz seed crystals failed to induce nucleation. Raising supersaturation to reach the unstable domain showed interesting features: calcite seed crystals yielded crystal growth kinetics compatible with the polynuclear growth model, without any induction time. The presence of quartz seed crystals reduced the induction times and resulted in nucleation in the bulk solution. The kinetic data in the latter case were consistent with the polynuclear growth model and the surface energy for the newly forming embryo was calculated equal to 31.1 mJ/m2, because of the dominantly heterogeneous nature of the process.  相似文献

Work towards developing a prototype GaAs based X‐ray fluorescence spectrometer focusing on the detector‐preamplifier system for in situ characterisation of deep seabed minerals is presented. Such an instrument could be useful for marine geology and provide insight into hydrothermal processes. It would also be beneficial for deep sea mining applications. The GaAs photodiode was electrically characterised at 4 °C (ambient seawater temperature) and 33 °C. A system energy resolution (full width at half maximum) at 5.9 keV of 580 eV at 4°C, limited by the dielectric noise, broadening to 680 eV at 33°C, was recorded. The spectral performance of the system was characterised across the energy range 4.95 keV to 21.17 keV, at 33°C, using high‐purity X‐ray fluorescence calibration samples excited by a Mo target X‐ray tube. The charge output from the system was found to be linear with incident photon energy. The energy resolution was found to broaden from 695 eV at 4.95 keV to 735 eV at 21.17 keV, attributed to the increasing Fano noise with energy. The same X‐ray tube was used to fluoresce an unprepared manganese nodule (revealing the presence of Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb, Sr, and Mo) and a black smoker hydrothermal vent sample (containing Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb, and Mo). Such a spectrometer may also find use in future space missions to study the hydrothermal vents that are believed to exist in the oceans of Jupiter's moon Europa.  相似文献

Correlation of density turbulence suppression and reduced plasma transport is observed in the internal transport barrier (ITB) region of JET tokamak discharges with optimized magnetic shear. The suppression occurs in two stages. First, low frequency turbulence and ion transport are reduced across the plasma core by a toroidal velocity shear generated by intense auxiliary heating. Then with the ITB formation, high frequency turbulence and electron transport are reduced locally within the steep pressure gradient region of the ITB.  相似文献

Sparingly soluble salts precipitation, e.g. calcium carbonate or calcium sulfate, results in pore clogging in rock formations and in the concomitant reduction of the local permeability of oil wells during the oil extraction processes. On the other hand, in situ controlled salt precipitation is desirable in various applications e.g. waterproofing of concrete constructions suffering from leakages, etc. In the present study, calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitation in sandbeds was investigated, in the presence of organic solvents simulating the conditions prevalent in oil‐well zones. CaCO3 precipitation was investigated from supersaturated solutions prepared by in‐situ mixing of NaHCO3 and CaCl2.2H2O solutions before the inlet of sandbeds. The solution resulting from the mixing of the two solutions was supersaturated with respect to all calcium carbonate polymorphs. Three types of experiments were performed depending on the supersaturated solutions: a) aqueous solutions b) aqueous supersaturated solutions in contact with sandbeds pre‐saturated with n‐dodecane c) aqueous solutions containing monoethylene glycol (MEG). Results showed that oil–water interfaces enhanced the heterogeneity of the supersaturated solutions and accelerated crystal growth of calcium carbonate at the inlet of the sandbed, resulting in early pore clogging and limitation of local permeability. Maximum sandbed consolidation was obtained with the solutions containing MEG.  相似文献
