Cytoskeletal elements of chick embryo fibroblasts revealed by detergent extraction.

Treatment of chick embryo fibroblasts with 0.5% Triton X-100 extracts most of the cell protein, leaving an organized part of the cell structure attached to the tissue culture dish. This "Triton cytoskeleton" consists largely of intermediate-sized filaments and bundles of microfilaments. SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis reveals that this cytoskeleton is made up of three main proteins. One protein component is 42,000 daltons and co-migrates with muscle actin. The other two components are 52,000 and 230,000 daltons and remain quantitatively associated with the cytoskeleton during the detergent extraction. The possible identity of these three protein components and their organization into a supramolecular structure is discussed.     

Molecular and crystal structures of 5,7-dichloro-4-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole and products of its reactions with secondary amines

The molecular and crystal structures of 5,7-dichloro-4-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole and products of its reactions with hexamethyleneimine and dimethylamine were established by X-ray diffraction analysis. The molecular structures and the systems of hydrogen bonds in the crystals of these compounds are discussed.     

Synthesis and biological activity of both (E)- and (Z)-isomers of optically pure (S)-14-methyl-8-hexadecenal (trogodermal), the antipodes of the pheromone of the khapra beetle

Both (E)- and (Z)-isomers of (S)-14-methyl-8-hexadecenal (trogodermal) were synthesized from 100% optically pure (R)-(+)-citronellic acid. These antipodes of the khapra beetle pheromone were 1/500 to 1/1000 times as active as the natural (R)-pheromone. Determination of the optical purities of citronellic acid and related compounds was achieved by hplc method. Warning was made not to forget the measurement of density in expressing the optical rotation of a neat liquid as [α]_D (neat).     

Furazan-containing bromoarenes in the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction

The palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of 3-[bromo(het)aryl]furazans and bromobenzofurazans with arylboronic acids afford target biaryls in good yields. 3-Bromo-4-phenylfurazan containing a bromine atom in the furazan ring undergoes decomposition under the reaction conditions.     

Diffusion of nondecaying TA-phonons

Propagation of nonequilibrium phonons under spontaneous decay and impurity scattering is studied on an isotropic model with one decaying and one nondecaying phonon branch (LA and TA). It is shown that the phonon nonequilibrity spreads in space linearly with time, the spreading velocity being of the order of the sound velocity.     

A new rectangular beam theory

A new theory for beams of rectangular cross-section which includes warping of the cross-sections is presented in the present work. By satisfying the shear-free conditions on the lateral surfaces of the beam a pair of coupled equations of motion are obtained such that no arbitrary shear coefficient is required. It is shown that the uncoupled equation for the transverse displacement is the same as the corresponding equation in Timoshenko beam theory provided that for the Timoshenko equation the shear coefficient is taken to be $\text{5}\text{6}$; this value lies within the range of values, 0·822–0·870, appearing in the literature for the beam of rectangular cross-section. Results for two typical static examples are given for both the new theory and Timoshenko beam theory. These results are compared with the solutions of the comparable problems in the linear theory of elasticity. For the end loaded cantilever beam the new theory predicts the same result for the neutral surface deflection as does the linear theory of elasticity while Timoshenko beam theory underestimates the shear correction term by 20%. For the uniformly loaded and simply supported case both beam theories provide the same overestimate of the central deflection when compared with the theory of elasticity solution.     

Magnetic response of disordered metallic rings: large contribution of far levels

We calculate the orbital linear magnetic response of disordered metallic rings to an Aharonov-Bohm flux using the BCS model for attractive electron-electron interaction. The contribution of all levels including those up to a high energy cutoff results in a much larger value than previously obtained using the local interaction model. The possible relevance of our results to the resolution of the discrepancy between the experimental and theoretical values for the ensemble-averaged persistent currents in these systems is discussed.     

Acoustoelectric current and pumping in a ballistic quantum point contact

The acoustoelectric current induced by a surface acoustic wave (SAW) in a ballistic quantum point contact is considered using a quantum approach. We find that the current is of the "pumping" type and is not related to drag, i.e., to the momentum transfer from the wave to the electron gas. At gate voltages corresponding to the plateaus of the quantized conductance the current is small. It is peaked at the conductance step voltages. The peak current oscillates and decays with increasing SAW wave number for short wavelengths. These results contradict previous calculations, based on the classical Boltzmann equation.
