Hot dense capsule-implosion cores produced by Z-pinch dynamic Hohlraum radiation

Hot dense capsule implosions driven by Z-pinch x rays have been measured using a approximately 220 eV dynamic Hohlraum to implode 1.7-2.1 mm diameter gas-filled CH capsules. The capsules absorbed up to approximately 20 kJ of x rays. Argon tracer atom spectra were used to measure the T(e) approximately 1 keV electron temperature and the n(e) approximately 1-4 x 10(23) cm(-3) electron density. Spectra from multiple directions provide core symmetry estimates. Computer simulations agree well with the peak emission values of T(e), n(e), and symmetry, indicating reasonable understanding of the Hohlraum and implosion physics.     

Stereochemistry and mechanism of the conversion of 5-aminolaevulinic acid into porphobilinogen catalysed by porphobilinogen synthase

(3R)- and (3S)-Deuteriated forms of 5-aminolaevulinic acid have been synthesized and the (3R)-form shows a significantly larger isotope effect when incubated with porphobilinogen synthase from bovine liver and from Bacillus subtilis; based on this and on available crystal structures, a modified mechanism for the enzymic reaction is proposed.     

Preliminary study of the thermally stimulated blue luminescence of ulexite

In this paper, novel results on the blue thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) emission of ulexite (NaCaB₅O₆(OH)₆·5H₂O) have been studied. The four maxima appearing at 60, 110, 200 and 240°C on the TSL glow curves of this borate could be respectively associated to: (i) the first dehydration (NaCaB₅O₆(OH)₆·5H₂O→NaCaB₅O₆(OH)₆·3H₂O), (ii) the creation-annihilation of the three-hydrated phase, (iii) the Na-coordinated chains dehydroxylation and the starting point of the alkali self-diffusion through the lattice and (iv) the amorphisation of the lattice. These results are fairly well correlated with the differential thermal analyses (DTA), in situ thermal observations under environmental scanning electron microscope (TESEM) and thermal X-ray diffraction (TXRD) techniques.
