Preparative isolation of (+)-beta-eudesmol fromAmyris balsamifera

Summary Optically pure (+)-beta-eudesmol is a possible starting material for the synthesis of several termite defense compounds. A two step procedure for the isolation of gram quantities of (+)-beta-eudesmol from commercially availableAmyris balsamifera oil (syn. West Indian sandalwood oil), containing 8% beta-eudesmol, was developed. Step one consisted of an efficient vacuum distillation of the total oil. Step two was a medium pressure LC separation with an AgNO₃ impregnated silica gel stationary phase. Several other separation procedures failed due to the presence of many closely related sesquiterpene alcohols (75% of the oil).     

The Effects of a Third Generation Combined Oral Contraceptive Pill on the Classical Singing Voice

The success of professional operatic singers depends upon the quality of their vocal mechanism. This is known to be sensitive to changes in the endocrine environment. Despite a widespread belief among singers that vocal quality changes according to the stage of the menstrual cycle, this has received little attention. In particular, the possibility that use of the contraceptive pill might stabilize vocal quality by "dampening" hormonal fluctuations has not previously been studied systematically. Here, we show that drospirenone containing oral contraceptive pill (Yasmin, Schering AG, West Sussex, UK) with antiandrogenic and antimineralocorticoid properties demonstrates a significant reduction in the irregularity of the pattern of vibration of the vocal folds during the performance of highly trained classical singers. This study constitutes the first double blind, randomized placebo controlled trial to assess the effects of the contraceptive pill on the patterns of vibration of the vocal folds during the performance of Western classical singing repertoire.     

A stochastic partial differential equation model for the pricing of mortgage-backed securities

We develop a dynamic structural model for the wealth of individual mortgagors in a mortgage pool. We model the process of default and prepayment and, by taking a limit as the pool size goes to infinity, derive a stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) which can be used to describe the evolution of the loss process from the pool. We prove existence and uniqueness of solutions to this SPDE and show how our model is able to capture, in a flexible way, the prices of credit risky tranches of mortgage-backed securities under different market conditions.     

Investigation of precipitator ash from two sub-bituminous coals

Iron-57 Mössbauer spectra of the precipitator ash from two South Australian coals have allowed the identification of five iron containing phases, with extensive aluminium substitution for iron. Some effects of variation in the flame temperature were observed, but the analysis did not explain differences in the fouling characteristics of the coals.     

Characterisation of multiple conducting permeable objects in metal detection by polarizability tensors

Realistic applications in metal detection involve multiple inhomogeneous‐conducting permeable objects, and the aim of this paper is to characterise such objects by polarizability tensors. We show that, for the eddy current model, the leading order terms for the perturbation in the magnetic field, due to the presence of N small conducting permeable homogeneous inclusions, comprises of a sum of N terms with each containing a complex symmetric rank 2 polarizability tensor. Each tensor contains information about the shape and material properties of one of the objects and is independent of its position. The asymptotic expansion we obtain extends a previously known result for a single isolated object and applies in situations where the object sizes are small and the objects are sufficiently well separated. We also obtain a second expansion that describes the perturbed magnetic field for inhomogeneous and closely spaced objects, which again characterises the objects by a complex symmetric rank 2 tensor. The tensor's coefficients can be computed by solving a vector valued transmission problem, and we include numerical examples to illustrate the agreement between the asymptotic formula describing the perturbed fields and the numerical prediction. We also include algorithms for the localisation and identification of multiple inhomogeneous objects.
