An intensive care nursery provides health care for critically ill newborn infants. During a typical shift, infants range from those needing only occasional care to those requiring constant attention. At the beginning of each shift, the head nurse groups the patients for assignment to staff nurses. Typically each nurse cares for one group of infants throughout the shift. The large variation in infant conditions along with several complicating side constraints makes it difficult to develop balanced nurse work loads. We develop a mathematical programming approach for achieving better workload balance. We first develop a detailed neonatal acuity system that quantifies the nursing workload of each patient. We then develop an integer linear program that assigns patients to nurses while balancing nurse workloads. Because this model is computationally intractable, we develop a heuristic that exploits the fact that most nurseries are divided into a number of physical zones. We use ten case studies taken from a major university hospital to benchmark the performance of this heuristic. We also perform a designed experiment using randomly generated problems that examines the effect of nursery parameters on heuristic performance.  相似文献

Clusters of galaxies are excellent probes of cosmic structure and evolution. X-ray studies of clusters provide some of their key parameters, viz., temperature of the hot intra-cluster gas, its metallicity, X-ray luminosity and surface brightness giving mass distribution and mass-flow rate in the case of cooling flows. X-ray measurements for a large sample of clusters have lead to estimates of the total gravitating mass in them, which can be compared to the virial masses derived from dynamical considerations and gravitational lensing in some of them. X-ray derived total masses are consistent with masses obtained from the other methods after the effects due to the presence of cooling flows are taken into account in the analyses. Estimated virial masses, lack of evolution in X-ray properties, and detection of several very hot clusters at high redshifts indicate a Universe with a low value (≤ 0.3) for the Ω parameter.  相似文献

We investigate the phase diagram of isospin-asymmetric matter at T=0T=0 in the two-flavor Nambu–Jona-Lasinio model. Our approach describes the single nucleon as a confined quark–diquark state, the saturation properties of nuclear matter at normal densities, and the phase transition to normal or color superconducting quark matter at higher densities. The resulting equation of state of charge-neutral matter and the structure of compact stars are discussed.  相似文献

The variation with temperature of long-range order in iron-aluminium solid solutions was studied using a high temperature diffractometer, and short-range order was studied at room temperature by measuring diffusely scattered X-rays. Compositions in the range 19–50 at. per cent aluminium were investigated. The atomic configurations discovered by Bradley and Jay were largely confirmed, including the structural discontinuity at the stoichiometric Fe3Al composition. The Fe3Al-type superlattice exists over the range 23–35 per cent Al approximately, and the order disappears gradually during heating, with no sudden drop at the critical temperature Tc. The degree of order at a given temperature below Tc depends on the thermal history by which that temperature was approached. This anomaly is explained in terms of a competition between directional order, of ferromagnetic origin, and long-range order; this model is also used to interpret certain anomalous magnetic properties at high temperature.

Alloys with less than 23 per cent aluminium possess various kinds of short-range order. An alloy containing 20.5 per cent aluminium has a structure which is unaffected by heat treatment, but all the other alloys investigated are sensitive to heat treatment. A unique observation is presented of interacting predissociating resonances which exhibit completely destructive interference in a region between the resonances. The use of a double-resonance technique, in which single rotational levels of the b (1)Sigma(+)(g) state of O2, prepared by pumping the magnetic-dipole b <--X transition, are probed by (2+1) resonance-enhanced multiphoton-ionization spectroscopy, eliminates overlapping rotational structure and enables observation of the interference process. Using a diabatic coupled-channel model, the interacting resonances are shown to be derived from the d (1)Pi(g)(v = 3,J = 17) Rydberg and II (1)Delta(g)(v = 6,J = 17) valence states.  相似文献

The vacuum ultraviolet laser-excited photoion-pair formation spectrum of CH 3Br has been measured under high resolution in the threshold region. The (2 + 1) and (3 + 1) resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization spectra in the same energy region are also reported. By comparison of the spectra in this and a more extended region, resonances in the photoion-pair formation spectrum are assigned to p and f Rydberg states. It is concluded that all the structure in the photoion-pair formation spectrum near threshold can be accounted for by members of the Omega = 0 subset of Rydberg states that act as doorway states to the ion channel.  相似文献

The optical-optical double resonance spectra of I(2) and I(2)-Xe mixtures at room temperature reported in the literature using a fixed-wavelength, broad band pump laser have now been recorded using a tuneable, narrow band source. We show that during the time of the overlapped laser pulses ( approximately 10 ns) and with 10-20 Torr of Xe there is widespread collisional energy transfer in the intermediate state and that this phenomenon offers an alternative explanation for the broad bands in the excitation spectrum, assigned to XeI(2) complexes by the authors of the earlier study (M. E. Akopyan, I. Y. Novikova, S. A. Poretsky and A. M. Pravilov, Chem. Phys., 2005, 310, 287). Dispersed emission bands, previously attributed to direct fluorescence from the ion-pair state(s) of the complexes, are re-assigned to emission from ion-pair states of the parent I(2) that are populated by collisional energy transfer out of the initially excited state.  相似文献

A range of vibrational levels of the D 0(u)(+)((3)P(2)) and F' 0(u)(+)((1)D(2)) ion-pair states of I(2) is shown to be easily generated by amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) from their more accessible partners, E 0(g)(+)((3)P(2)) and f' 0(g)(+)((1)D(2)), in sufficient concentration for dispersed fluorescence studies of the D 0(u)(+)((3)P(2)) --> 0(g)(+)(bb) and F' 0(u)(+)((1)D(2)) --> 0(g)(+)(bb) transitions to be carried out. T(0) (J = 49) of this shallow-bound 0(g)(+)(bb) valence state is unambiguously determined and an improved R(e) value of 3.952 +/- 0.005 A is obtained from optimizing the fit of the intensities of the vibrational progressions in the 0(g)(+)(bb) state, and T(e) is found to be 27311.3 +/- 2 cm(-1), leading to D(e) = 442.0 +/- 2 cm(-1).  相似文献

Using high-resolution Fourier transform emission techniques, we have resolved rotational structure in the D0(u)(+)((3)P(2)) → X0(g)(+) emission following collisional transfer from the E0(g)(+)((3)P(2)) state in I(2). The P:R branch ratios in the E0(g)(+)((3)P(2)) → D0(u)(+)((3)P(2)) transfer are found to vary enormously with v(E) and v(D). We show that the observed intensities are all consistent with the transfer being dominated by long-range, near-resonant collisions with residual H(2)O. Unequal P:R branch ratios in the E0(g)(+)((3)P(2)) → A1(u) emission have been shown to result from mixing of the E0(g)(+)((3)P(2)) and β1(g)((3)P(2)) states via Ω-uncoupling.  相似文献

Half life for the emission of exotic clusters like 8Be, 12C, 16O, 20Ne, 24Mg and 28Si are computed taking Coulomb and proximity potentials as interacting barrier and many of these are found well within the present upper limit of measurement. These results lie very close to those values reported by Shanmugam et al using their cubic plus Yukawa plus exponential model (CYEM). It is found that 12C and 16O emissions from 116Ce and 16O from 118Ce are most favorable for measurement (T 1/2<1010 s). Lowest half life time for 16O emission from 116Ce stress the role of doubly magic 100Sn daughter in exotic decay. Geiger-Nuttall plots were studied for different clusters and are found to be linear. Inclusion of proximity potential will not produce much deviation to linear nature of Geiger-Nuttall plots. It is observed that neutron excess in the parent nuclei slow down the exotic decay process. These findings support the earlier observations of Gupta and collaborators using their preformed cluster model (PCM).  相似文献
