Structural characterization by chromatographic profiling of the oligosaccharides of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) recombinant envelope glycoprotein gp120 produced in Chinese hamster ovary cells

This report together with the paper by T. Mizuochi, M. W. Spellman, M. Larkin, J. Solomon, L. J. Basa and T. Feizi (1988) Biochem. J. 254, 599-603 describes the structural elucidation of the N-linked oligosaccharides of the HIV envelope glycoprotein, gp120 (cloned from the HTLV-III B isolate and expressed as a secreted fusion protein after transfection of Chinese hamster ovary cells), which is known to bind with high affinity to human T4 lymphocytes. Oligosaccharides were released from peptide by hydrazinolysis, fractionated by paper electrophoresis, high performance lectin affinity chromatography and Bio-Gel P-4 column chromatography, and their structures determined by sequential exoglycosidase digestions in conjunction with methylation analysis. The glycoprotein was found to be unique in its diversity of oligosaccharide structures. These include high-mannose type and hybrid type, as well as four categories of complex type chains: mono-, bi-, tri- and tetra-antennary, with or without N-acetyllactosamine repeats, and with or without a core region fucose residue. Among the sialidase-treated oligosaccharides no less than 29 structures were identified as follows: (formula; see text) where G = galactose; GN = N-acetylglucosamine; M = mannose; F = fucose; +/- = residues present in a proportion of chains. The actual number of oligosaccharide structures is much greater since before desialylation there was evidence that among the hybrid and complex type chains all but 6% contained sialic acid at the C-3 position of terminal galactose residues, and partially sialylated forms of the bi- and multiantennary chains were present.     

The crossover from classical to quantum regime in the problem of the decay of the metastable state

The probability of the decay of the metastable state has been found as a function of viscosity and temperature. At low temperatures, a classical overbarrier transition changes to the quantum tunneling. At low viscosity in classical and transitive semiquantum region of temperatures a depopulation of the distribution function is significant. The distribution function is shown to satisfy the integral kinetic equation, the kernel of which equals the transition probability. The probability of transitions, induced by the red noise, with the frequency comparable to the transition frequency, is found.     

Wigner dynamics of quantum semi-relativistic oscillator

The integral Wigner–Liouville equation describing time evolution of the semi-relativistic quantum 1D harmonic oscillator have been exactly solved by combination of the Monte Carlo procedure and molecular dynamics methods. The strong influence of the relativistic effects on the time evolution of the momentum, velocity and coordinate Wigner distribution functions and the average values of quantum operators have been studied. Unexpected ‘protuberances’ in time evolution of the distribution functions were observed. Relativistic proper time dilation for oscillator have been calculated.     

Depolarization in reentrant spin glasses: a comparison between neutron and muon probes

In the amorphous ( Fe_1-x Mn_x)₇₅ P₁₆ B_6 Al_3 alloys, muon and neutron depolarization data, combined with the results of small angle neutron scattering, magnetization and Mössbauer spectroscopy, probe the existence of three distinct magnetic transitions at T_C, T_K and T_F (T_F < _K < _C).     

Deterministic weak localization in periodic structures

In some perfect periodic structures classical motion exhibits deterministic diffusion. For such systems we present the weak localization theory. As a manifestation for the velocity autocorrelation function a universal power law decay is predicted to appear at four Ehrenfest times. This deterministic weak localization is robust against weak quenched disorders, which may be confirmed by coherent backscattering measurements of periodic photonic crystals.     

Time evolution of a fractal distribution: Particle concentrations in free-surface turbulence

Steady-state turbulence is generated in a tank of water and the trajectories of particles forming a compressible system on the surface are tracked in time. The initial uniformly distributed floating particles coagulate and form a fractal structure, a rare manifestation of a strange attractor observable in real space. The surface pattern reaches a steady state in approximately 1 s. Measurements are made of the fractal dimensions D_q(t) (q=1 to 6) of the floating particles starting with the uniform distribution D_q(0)=2 for Taylor Microscale Reynolds number Re_λ?160. Focus is on the time evolution of the correlation dimension D₂(t) as the steady state is approached. This steady state is reached in several large eddy turnover times and does so at an exponential rate.     

Observation of Spin and Valley Splitting of Landau Levels under Magnetic Tunneling in Graphene/Boron Nitride/Graphene Structures

Resonance magnetic tunneling in heterostructures formed by graphene single sheets separated by a hexagonal boron nitride barrier and bounded by two gates has been investigated in a strong magnetic field, which has allowed observing transitions between spin- and valley-split Landau levels with various indices belonging to different graphene sheets. An unexpected increase with the temperature in the interlayer tunneling conductance owing to transitions between the Landau levels in strong magnetic fields cannot be explained by existing theories.
