Local automorphisms of operator algebras on Banach spaces

In this paper we extend a result of Semrl stating that every 2-local automorphism of the full operator algebra on a separable infinite dimensional Hilbert space is an automorphism. In fact, besides separable Hilbert spaces, we obtain the same conclusion for the much larger class of Banach spaces with Schauder bases. The proof rests on an analogous statement concerning the 2-local automorphisms of matrix algebras for which we present a short proof. The need to get such a proof was formulated in Semrl's paper.

     

A remark on the Kochen-Specker theorem and some characterizations of the determinant on sets of Hermitian matrices

In this paper we describe the general forms of all (nonlinear) continuous functionals on the sets of positive definite, positive semi-definite and Hermitian matrices which are multiplicative on the commuting elements. As a consequence, we obtain some new characterizations of the determinant on those classes of matrices.

     

Proton-proton correlations at small relative momentum in neon-nucleus collisions at E/A=400 and 800 MeV

Proton-proton small angle correlations have been measured in neon-nucleus collisions, using the 4 pi detector Diogene, at 400 and 800 MeV per nucleon incident energies. Values of the size of the emitting region are obtained by comparison with the Koonin formula, taking into account the biases of the apparatus. The dependence of the density on target mass and incident energy is also analysed.     

Thermal investigations on the crystallization of sorbitol

The melting and crystallization of sorbitol were investigated with the DSC method and thermal microscopy. Sorbitol was found to have two crystalline modifications (confirmed by X-ray diffraction) with different melting points, while rapid cooling of molten sorbitol resulted in an amorphous form. The effect of inoculation on the crystallization of the melt was studied too. Powders of both crystalline modifications were used for this purpose. A new technological process for rapid crystallization of molten sorbitol has been worked out on the basis of the thermal analysis results.

For everyt>1 and positiven we construct explicit examples of graphsG with |V (G)|=n, |E(G)|c _t ·n ^2–1/t which do not contain a complete bipartite graghK _t,t !+1 This establishes the exact order of magnitude of the Turán numbers ex (n, K _t,s ) for any fixedt and allst!+1, improving over the previous probabilistic lower bounds for such pairs (t, s). Synthesis of vinca alkaloids and related compounds. 100. Stereoselective oxidation reactions of compounds with the aspidospermane and quebrachamine ring system. First synthesis of some alkaloids containing the epoxy ring

The first syntheses of the alkaloids (-)-mehranine (3), (+)-voaphylline/conoflorine (4), (+)-N(a)-methylvoaphylline/hecubine (5), and (-)-lochnericine (2) were achieved by stereoselective epoxidation starting from (-)-tabersonine (1), through intermediates with the aspidospermane and quebrachamine skeleton.     

Investigation of the species-specific degradation behaviour of methylmercury and ethylmercury under microwave irradiation

The degradation behaviour of methylmercury (MeHg) under microwave irradiation is investigated, as is the (different) degradation behaviour of ethylmercury (EtHg) under similar irradiation. A simple and highly sensitive SPME-GC-pyrolysis-AFS system was used to analyse the aqueous MeHg and EtHg standard solutions after derivatization with sodium tetraphenylborate (NaBPh₄). Samples were irradiated in a microwave digester at microwave powers ranging from 20 to 160 W for durations of 2 to 10 min. The different tolerances towards microwave treatment of the two organomercury species were evident. Practically no degradation was experienced for MeHg for up to 8 minutes of irradiation at 120 W or for up to 4 minutes at 160 W. Significant analyte loss was observed for EtHg after 2 minutes at 40 W of microwave power. Ternary β-Cyclodextrin Complexes as Models of Allosteric Effects

Two guests reacting with cyclodextrins (CDs) may form ternary complexes, in addition to the common competition of 1:1 complexes. One of the guests can really be included into the cavity of the CD, while the second guest molecule is either inserted close to the first one or attached to the outer surface of the supramolecule by H-bonding. There is a further possibility when the included guest bears a substituent outside the cavity and the second guest can interact with it. The properties of the ternary species formed are highly influenced by the solely (or primarily) included guest. The changes are attributed to the altered properties of the hydrophilic domain of the CD. The phenomena can be proved by NMR data obtained for some binary systems of -CD inclusion complexes and acetic acid and by the stability constants of the ternary complexes formed. Allosteric effects as well as coenzyme/apoenzyme/substrate interactions could be well modelled by these types of CD complexes.     

Cycloaddition reactions of 1.3-benzothiazines v synthesis of new tetracyclic ring systems

New tetracyclic derivatives (3a,$\text{b}$, 5, 8) similar to protoberberines, but containing a lactam structural element and other hetero atoms besides the bridge-head nitrogen in rings B and C, were prepared by cycloaddition of 6,7-dimethoxy-2H-1,3-benzothiazine (1a) with $\text{o}$-substituted aromatic carboxylic acid derivatives (2a,$\text{b}$, 4) and from 4- methyl-6,7-dimethoxy-2$\text{H}$-1,3-benzothiazine (1b) with 3.5-dinitrobenzoyl chloride.
