Reliability of estimating the room volume from a single room impulse response

The methods investigated for the room volume estimation are based on geometrical acoustics, eigenmode, and diffuse field models and no data other than the room impulse response are available. The measurements include several receiver positions in a total of 12 rooms of vastly different sizes and acoustic characteristics. The limitations in identifying the pivotal specular reflections of the geometrical acoustics model in measured room impulse responses are examined both theoretically and experimentally. The eigenmode method uses the theoretical expression for the Schroeder frequency and the difficulty of accurately estimating this frequency from the varying statistics of the room transfer function is highlighted. Reliable results are only obtained with the diffuse field model and a part of the observed variance in the experimental results is explained by theoretical expressions for the standard deviation of the reverberant sound pressure and the reverberation time. The limitations due to source and receiver directivity are discussed and a simple volume estimation method based on an approximate relationship with the reverberation time is also presented.     

The putative Diels-Alderase macrophomate synthase is an efficient aldolase

We find that the putative Diels-Alderase macrophomate synthase (MPS) catalyzes the addition of pyruvate enolate, generated by decarboxylation of oxaloacetate, to a variety of aldehydes. Alkyl, aryl, and heteroaryl aldehydes are accepted as substrates, providing gamma-hydroxy-alpha-ketoacids in 35-95% yield with modest levels of stereochemical control. These aldol products, which are difficult to synthesize by other methods, are formed with efficiency comparable to that of macrophomate. Our results thus provide evidence that a two-step Michael-aldol pathway is a plausible alternative to the postulated [4 + 2] cycloaddition in the MPS-catalyzed addition of pyruvate enolate to 2-pyrones. They are also relevant to understanding the divergent evolution of type II pyruvate aldolases.     

Elimination reactions of ions in the gas phase

The loss of water from the molecular ion of 2-adamantanol was investigated using specifically labelled deuterium derivatives, and, in particular that stereospecifically labelled in position 4. Water is lost predominantly in a stereospecific 1, 3 fashion by two clearly distinguishable mechanisms. Determination of metastable ion characteristics proved to be essential for drawing this distinction.     

Synthesis of the Phenylpyridal Scaffold as a Helical Peptide Mimetic

Phenylpyridal‐ and phenyldipyridal‐based scaffolds have been designed and synthesized as novel helical peptide mimetics. The synthesis required optimisation and selective alkylation in producing 2,6‐functionalized 3‐hydroxypyridine derivatives for a convergent scheme. The pyridine analogues were coupled by a series of Suzuki/Stille types cross‐coupling reactions. A series of biaryl and ter‐aryl substituted heterocycles were produced. The synthetic approach was concise and high yielding allowing large variability at the wanted side‐chain attachment points. A number of compounds were synthesised to show the versatility of the strategy.     

Search for sub-eV mass solar axions by the CERN Axion Solar Telescope with 3He buffer gas

The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) has extended its search for solar axions by using (3)He as a buffer gas. At T=1.8 K this allows for larger pressure settings and hence sensitivity to higher axion masses than our previous measurements with (4)He. With about 1 h of data taking at each of 252 different pressure settings we have scanned the axion mass range 0.39 eV?m(a)?0.64 eV. From the absence of excess x rays when the magnet was pointing to the Sun we set a typical upper limit on the axion-photon coupling of g(aγ)?2.3×10(-10) GeV(-1) at 95% C.L., the exact value depending on the pressure setting. Kim-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov axions are excluded at the upper end of our mass range, the first time ever for any solar axion search. In the future we will extend our search to m(a)?1.15 eV, comfortably overlapping with cosmological hot dark matter bounds.     

Electro-optic fiber sensor for amplitude and phase detection of radio frequency electromagnetic fields

We present a miniature fiber-optic electromagnetic field (EMF) sensor that is capable of simultaneously detecting the amplitude and phase of an EMF in the range of 0.1-6 GHz. We focus on magnetic field measurements, since the H-field is more significant in our target applications due its direct relation to the current. The sensor is based on an open optical platform to which various antennas can be attached and contains a radio-frequency amplifier for signal conditioning and a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser as an electro-optic converter. The millimeter size and the full electrical isolation of the sensor allow EMF detection with minimal disturbance. We have characterized the sensor in the near field of a lambda/2 dipole, a rectangular waveguide, and a microstrip line, and we explain the experimental results with a simple theoretical model confirming the mapped near-field distribution of the investigated field source.     

Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric analysis and regulatory issues of polar pesticides in natural and treated waters

Pesticides are among the most detected contaminants in the aquatic environment. This is mainly due to their use in agriculture and their physico-chemical properties that enable transportation and a persistent or pseudo-persistent existence in the water media. Several directives and guidelines set maximum levels of pesticides in water in order to protect the human and environmental health. A brief discussion of the existing directives and guidelines concerning pesticides in water is presented, e.g., the new regulatory framework for the Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH), and the Directive 91/414/EEC concerning the placing of plant protection products on the market. Up-to-date analytical tools to support the REACH program are of prime importance to ensure its complete implementation. Since liquid chromatography (LC) coupled to mass spectrometry (MS) is considered the most appropriate technique for determination of most modern pesticides in environmental waters, the most recent developments and applications in this field are discussed in detail in this review.     

Liquid chromatography of sugars on silica-based stationary phases

A review is given of sugar analysis by liquid chromatography using silica columns. Aspects covered are column materials and preparation, chemically and physically modified amine columns, octadecy- and unmodified silica columns; eluent composition and elution mechanisms for the different types of columns used; detection methods, RI and UV detectors, visible lights, fluorescence, moving-wire, polarimetric and mass detection; and sample preparation and origin of samples.
