Synthesis of 1,3-diaryl-4,7-phenanthrolines

A number of new 1,3-diaryl-4,7-phenanthrolines were synthesized by heterocyclization of arylidene-6-quinolylamines with acetophenones in the presence of an acidic catalyst. Intermediate amino ketones and side products, viz., N-(R¹-benzyl)-6-quinolylamines and ,-unsaturated ketones, were isolated. The IR, UV, PMR, and mass spectra of the synthesized compounds are discussed.Translated from Khimiya Geterotsiklicheskikh Soedinenii, No. 10, pp. 1398–1401, October, 1985.     

Thermal decomposition of Np(IV) and Pu(III, IV) oxalates

Thermal decomposition of Pu(C₂O₄)₂·6H₂O, Pu₂(C₂O₄)₃·10H₂O and Np(C₂O₄)₂ ·6H₂O has been studied by using combination of gas chromatography, infrared spectroscopy, spectrophotometry and complex thermal analysis. We also investigated the decomposition of Pu oxalate under its -radiation. The reduction of Pu(IV) to Pu(III) has been confirmed. We found Np(V), which is formed from Np(IV), on the basis of infrared and absorption spectra of the intermediate compounds.     

Pentakis(carbamide)dioxoneptunium(V) Nitrate [NpO2{OC(NH2)2}5](NO3): Synthesis,Crystal Structure,and Some Properties

X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic data for a new Np(V) compound, namely, [NpO₂{OC(NH₂)₂}₅](NO₃) (I) are presented. Crystals are monoclinic, space group P2₁, a = 11.142(2) Å, b = 7.6379(9) Å, c = 11.143(2) Å, = 108.9(1)°, Z = 2, V = 897.1(2) ų. The neptunium atom has a typical pentagonal-bipyramidal environment with five oxygen atoms of the carbamide molecules in the equatorial plane. The nitrate ion is in the outer sphere. Carbamide is a strong molecular ligand with respect to Np(V) and hence, cation–cation bonds of the NpO₂ ⁺ ions are not realized in structure I. The wave length of the f–f transition in the electronic absorption spectra of crystalline complex I and Np(V) in a saturated carbamide solution is virtually the same and is equal to 991 nm.

Crystal Structure of Neptunium(V) Acetate [(NpO<Subscript>2</Subscript>)<Subscript>2</Subscript>(OOCCH<Subscript>3</Subscript>)<Subscript>2</Subscript>(H<Subscript>2</Subscript>O)] ⋅ 2H<Subscript>2</Subscript>O

A new neptunium(V) complex [(NpO₂)₂(CH₃COO)₂(H₂O)] ? 2H₂O was synthesized and its crystal structure was determined. The unit cell parameters are: a = 24.007(10) Å, b = 6.779(3) Å, c = 8.076(3) Å, space group Pnma, Z = 4, V = 1314.2(9) ų, R = 0.049, wR(F²) = 0.105. The crystal structure of the compound is composed of neutral [(NpO₂)₂(CH₃COO)₂(H₂O)] layers and molecules of the water of crystallization. Each of the crystallographically independent neptunoyl ions performs a bidentate function thus forming a composite system of cation-cation bonds.
