Exposure of the skin to UV radiation induces local inflammation. We hypothesized that inflammation induced by erythemal UV-B irradiation could elevate levels of serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and that suberythemal repeating doses of solar-simulating UV radiation (SSR) would produce photoadaptation to such inflammation. Separation-free high-sensitivity assays of CRP show an increase by 42% (P = 0.046) in CRP concentrations in healthy human subjects 24 h after a 3 minimal erythemal dose (MED) dose of UV-B delivered onto a 100 cm2 skin area. Preceding daily suberythemal doses of whole-body SSR for 10 or 30 consecutive days completely prevented the CRP increase. UV-B-induced skin erythema was partially attenuated by 30 preceding days of SSR only (P = 0.00066). After 10 daily SSR doses, the mean baseline CRP concentrations (0.24 +/- 0.21 mg/L) declined by 35% (P = 0.018). Using high-sensitivity analysis of serum CRP as the endpoint marker for cutaneous inflammation, we show that acute exposure of even a relatively small skin area to erythemal UV-B induces skin inflammation detectable also at the systemic level and that photoadaptation by preceding repeating suberythemal doses of SSR reduces signs of inflammation. Our data complement the view given by previous studies in that local photoadaptation also has systemic manifestations.  相似文献

The purpose of this work was to support the long-term experiments for investigation of rock matrix retention properties at the spent nuclear fuel repository site ONKALO, in Olkiluoto, Western Finland. Towards this end, rock samples were characterised in terms of porosity connected to mineralogy, with emphasis on pore sizes, and fillings. Both filled and unfilled pores were found with unfilled pores being majority in the pegmatitic granite veins of the mostly veined gneiss samples. It was found that the fillings were often connected to local alteration and the alteration caused variation in the range of pore sizes.  相似文献

Recently it was demonstrated that the rotational and vibrational spectra of quantum rings containing few electrons can be described quantitatively by an effective spin-Hamiltonian combined with rigid center-of-mass rotation and internal vibrations of localized electrons. We use this model Hamiltonian to study the quantum rings at finite temperatures and in presence of a nonzero magnetic field. Total spin, angular momentum and pair correlation show similar phase diagram which can be understood with help of the rotational spectrum of the ring. Abstract

This article introduces the main achievements resulting from the DWDM/ODC project. The five areas of research activity within the DWDM/ODC project cover some of the main issues of design and development of dense wavelength division multiplexing systems for transparent optical networks. These issues are: performance assessment with arbitrary optical filtering; performance of signaling formats; dispersion compensation strategies for directly and externally modulated systems in presence of nonlinear transmission-induced degradation; and the impact of noise and crosstalk in the extent of transparent optical networks. All five areas of research activity have contributed significantly to a better understanding of the limitations present in dense wavelength division multiplexing systems.  相似文献

Glyoxal bis(amidinohydrazone) (GBG) and several analogs thereof are compounds of considerable pharmacological interest, and a variety of HPLC and MECC methods have been developed for their analysis. In these methods, detection is invariably based on the strong UV absorption of the compound. Yet, almost nothing has been known of their UV and VIS spectral properties. In the present paper the UV and VIS Spectroscopy of GBG has been studied in several solvent systems (water, 0. 03 M aqueous sodium acetate buffer, 0. 1 inM aqueous NaOH and dimethylsulfoxide). In the case of solutions in bare water, the shape of the UV spectrum depends drastically on concentration, probably because of changes in the species distribution of GBG as a function of concentration. The spectrum comprises one maximum at ca. 200 nm, and between ca. 250 nin and 400 nm an absorption region with distinctly higher absorbance. In the case of aqueous sodium acetate as well as NaOH solutions, one strong maximum can be detected (at ca. 285–288 nm and 332–337 nm, respectively). In both cases, the maximum occurs at constant wavelength, being independent of concentration. In dimethylsulfoxide, the spectrum of GBG contains an absorption band at distinctly higher wavelengths (λmax 354 nm) than in any one of the aqueous solvents studied, indicating that solvent effects are considerable in the UV spectrum of GBG. In no case, distinct absorption could be detected at wavelengths higher than 400 nm. The results indicate that if aqueous media are used as elements in HPLC analyses of bis(amidinohydrazones) or as solvents in direct UV analysis, they must be buffered.  相似文献
