Complete replacement of H2 by D2 via Pd/C-catalyzed H/D exchange reaction

[reaction: see text] A general and in situ D2 gas generation method using 10% Pd/C-catalyzed H2-D2 exchange reaction in a H2-D2O system has been developed. H2 gas sealed in a reaction flask was efficiently converted into nearly pure D2 gas, which can be used for the reductive deuteration of substrates possessing reducible functionalities within the molecule.     

Highly chemoselective hydrogenation method using novel finely dispersed palladium catalyst on silk-fibroin: its preparation and activity

A palladium-fibroin complex (Pd/Fib) was prepared by soaking silk-fibroin in MeOH solution of Pd(OAc)₂ for 2 days (under Ar atmosphere)—4 days (under air). Pd(OAc)₂ was gradually absorbed by fibroin and the rapid reduction of fibroin conjugated Pd(OAc)₂ proceeded with MeOH as a reductant at room temperature to be the Pd(0) complex. Pd/Fib catalyzed chemoselective hydrogenation of acetylenes, olefins and azides in the presence of aromatic ketones and aldehydes, halides, N-Cbz protective groups and benzyl esters which are readily hydrogenated using Pd/C or Pd/C(en) as a catalyst.     

Pyrimidines. XIII. Novel pyrimidine to pyrimidine transformation reactions

Novel pyrimidine to pyrimidine transformation reactions are described. 1,3-Dimethyl-(or diethyl)-uracil(1) are converted into isocytosine, 2-thiouracil or uracil derivatives by treatment with guanidine, thiourea or urea, respectively. The latter two cases require base catalysis. The effects of some substituents at C-5 and C-6 of 1,3-dialkylated uracils (1a → 1e) on this transformation were examined and a plausible mechanism is offered for their reaction. The utility of this reaction is exemplified by the facile two-step conversion of pseudouridine into the anlileukemic agent, pseudoisocytidine, in good overall yield.     

A novel ring transformation of uracil into the benzene ring system

Reaction of 5-formyl-1,3-dimethyluracil with some active methylene compounds in the presence of base causes novel ring transformations to give the p-hydroxybenzoates and the nicotinate.     

Reductive and catalytic monoalkylation of primary amines using nitriles as an alkylating reagent

[reaction: see text] A selective and catalytic mono-N-alkylation method of both aromatic and aliphatic amines using nitriles as an alkylating agent with Pd/C or Rh/C as a catalyst is described. This method is particularly attractive to provide an environmentally benign and applicable alkylation method of amines without using toxic and corrosive alkylating agents such as alkyl halides and carbonyl compounds.     

Methyl torsional potentials of rotational isomers of m-methylanisole studied by spectral hole-burning spectroscopy

Laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) excitation spectra of m-methylanisole in a supersonic jet were measured. Two series of progressions were observed in the spectrum, originating at 36048 and 36115 cm⁻¹, which were successfully assigned to the transitions to the methyl internal rotational vibronic levels of the two isomers, i.e. cis and trans isomers, with the aid of hole-burning spectrum measurements and quantum-chemical calculations. The progression for the trans isomer was observed up to the 6a₁ band, while only the 3a₁ band in addition to the 0a₁ and 1e bands was observed for the cis isomer. This finding can be explained by the conformational change upon the electronic excitation; the 60° rotation of the methyl torsional angle takes place for the trans isomer but not for the cis isomer.     

Chiral Phosphoric‐Acid‐Catalyzed Transfer Hydrogenation of Ethyl Ketimine Derivatives by Using Benzothiazoline

Chiral phosphoric acid catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of ketimines derived from propiophenone derivatives and reductive amination of alkyl ethyl ketone derivatives were extensively examined in the presence of two representative hydrogen donors. The excellent enantioselective transfer hydrogenation was achieved by use of benzothiazoline as a hydrogen donor. The theoretical studies elucidated that the unsymmetrical structure of benzothiazoline plays an important role in high enantioselective hydrogenation.     

Cycloaddition reaction of pyrimidine-dienols with dienophiles. A new approach to quinazolines

A new synthetic approach to quinazolines bearing a carboxy group is described. Reaction of 5-carbonyl substituted 1,3,6-tri-methyluracils (I) with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate or electron-deficient olefines affords quinazoline derivatives (III-VI) $\text{via}$ pyrimidine(Z)-dienols (II) formed by base-catalyzed isomerization.     

Structure of commelinin,a blue complex pigment from the blue flowers of Commelina communis

The X-ray crystal structure of natural commelinin is investigated. The results demonstrate that commelinin is a tetranuclear (4 Mg²⁺) metal complex, in which two Mg²⁺ ions chelate to six anthocyanin molecules, while the other two Mg²⁺ ions bind to six flavone molecules, stabilizing the commelinin complex, a new type of supramolecular complex.
