Electrochemical reductive breakdown of solid-phase chlorinated rubber in aprotic and aqueous media

A study has been made of the electrochemical reductive breakdown (ECRB) of solid-phase chlorinated butyl rubber (CBR). It has been established that CBR does not accept electrons under conditions of fast sweep of electrode potential; however, with prolonged cathodic polarization of the substrate at the polymer/cathode/solution three-phase boundary, it undergoes reduction and subsequent chemical conversion, including intermolecular cross-linking and breakdown of the macromolecules. The rate of ECRB of the CBR depends on the potential and materials of the cathode, and also on the nature of the solvent. In a aprotic medium, the process of CBR breakdown leads to the formation of long polyconjugated structures that color its surface black in the vicinity of the three-phase boundary. In an aqueous medium, no such color is observed, but the products of ECRB are found to contain conjugated double bonds with a shorter conjugation chain than in the case of the aprotic medium. Gas-Chromatographic Determination of Butanol and Butyl Acrylate in Aqueous Solutions with the Use of Headspace Analysis

A procedure has been developed for the determination of the concentration of butanol and butyl acrylate in aqueous solutions in the range of 0.5–20 MPC. The procedure is based on static headspace gas-chromatographic analysis on a column filled with the Chromaton N-AW-HMDS sorbent containing 15 wt % of polyethylene glycol adipate with detection by a flame-ionization detector.     

Preparation of mesoporous silicon dioxide with high specific surface area

The influence of the reactant ratio on the specific surface area, total pore volume, and mean pore diameter of mesoporous silicon dioxide prepared by the sol-gel method was examined. The optimal reactant ratio for preparing the material with a high specific surface area was determimed.     

Increase in the contribution of transamination to the respiration of mitochondria during arousal

The involvement of transamination in the respiration of liver mitochondria in ground squirrels during hibernation and arousal has been studied. It was shown by HPLC that, in the presence of glutamate and malate, the formation of alpha-ketoglutarate (KGL), a transamination marker, and fumarate, a product of succinate oxidation, takes place. During arousal, the formation of KGL increased fourfold, and the respiration sensitive to the inhibitor of aspartate transaminase aminooxyacetate (AOA) increased threefold. The function of transamination upon arousal is related to the elimination of oxaloacetate, an endogenous inhibitor of succinate dehydrogenase. In addition, being more resistant to oxidative stress than oxidation, transamination is probably involved in the antioxidant defense required during the rapid rise of body temperature upon arousal. Our experiments showed an increase in the concentration of malonic dialdehyde (MDA), an end product of lipid peroxidation, in liver mitochondria in this state, which can reduce the activity of the enzymes of the tricarboxylic acids cycle. Under these conditions, the transamination contributes to the maintenance of a high respiration rate necessary for arousal.     

Spontaneous Decomposition of Industrially Manufactured Sodium Hypochlorite Solutions

Spontaneous decomposition of industrially manufactured aqueous solutions of sodium hypochlorite was studied. The effect of composition of the reaction medium on the structural-textural characteristics of mesoporous silicon dioxide

The conditions for the preparation of mesoporous silicon dioxide in water-alkali, alcohol-alkali, water-ammonia, alcohol-ammonia, and acid media were determined and its textural characteristics were studied.
