Orientation control of perovskite thin films on glass substrates by the application of a seed layer prepared from oxide nanosheets

Orientation control of perovskite compounds was investigated by the application of a seed layer prepared from oxide nanosheets. An aqueous suspension of oxide nanosheets was prepared by the exfoliation of a layered compound of KCa₂Nb₃O₁₀ oxide grains. A seed layer composed of (TBA)Ca₂Nb₃O₁₀ nanosheets (TBA = tetrabutylammonium) was formed on a glass substrate by simply dip coating it in the suspension. Two kinds of perovskite compounds, LaNiO₃ (LNO) and Pb(Zr,Ti)O₃ (PZT) with a preferred orientation of (00l) were successfully grown on this seeded glass substrate. In this study, the relation between lattice mismatch and electrical properties is investigated. A large, oriented PZT film with a size of 5 ×4 cm shows an improved P-E hysteresis behavior by use of this orientation control.     

Processing and characterization of Pb(Mg,Nb)O3-PbTiO3 thin films from metal alkoxide-derived gels

The sol-gel processing is one of promising methods to fabricate well-derived integrated thin films at relatively low temperature. Ferroelectric niobates films do afford the possibilities for adding the values by the hybridization with semiconductor and/or electro-optic systems. The molecular level designing of the precursor solution was stressed as well as the control of key processing factors. The advantages of this sol-gel have been extended to prepare the ferroelectric Pb(Mg, Nb)O₃-PbTiO₃ solid solution films integrated on Si wafers. The crystallization of the films with desired crystal structure could be promoted by the controlled partial hydrolysis of designed alkoxide solution in the intermediate state and the pre-heated treatment of alkoxide-derived films in flow of water vapor and oxygen gas mixture.     

Photochemical Behavior of Single‐Walled Carbon Nanotubes in the Presence of Propylamine

This report describes the photochemical behavior of single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in the presence of propylamine. The SWNTs are characterized by absorption and Raman spectroscopy. The spectral changes due to photoirradiation indicate that reactions occur predominantly with the metallic SWNTs and small‐diameter SWNTs. The detection of amine radicalcation species by ESR spectroscopy reveals photoinduced electron transfer from the amine to the excited SWNTs. After exposure of the photoirradiated SWNTs to air, the characteristic spectra were recovered, except for that of the small‐diameter SWNTs. The results suggest that, after photoreduction of the SWNTs, subsequent selective sidewall functionalization of the small‐diameter SWNTs occurs.     

The mineralization of CO32− ions on chitin- or chitosan- metal composite beads in water

The following dry composite beads (diameter 1.0-1-2 mm) were prepared: chitin-CaCO₃, chitosan-CaCl₂. chitosan-CuCl₂, partially N-acetylated chitosan-CuCl₂, chitosan-CuSO₄, chitosan-Fe₃O₄, chitin-SiO₂. Each of chitosan-CuCl₂, chitosan-CuSO₄ and chitin-CaCl₂ composite beads was treated in aqueous K₂CO₃ at room temperature to afford a mixture of metal carbonates and hydroxides on chitin or chitosan chain.

Optical properties and origin of infrared light scattering centers in undoped semi-insulating GaAs crystals

The wavelength dependence and polarization characteristics of the infrared light scattered from an undoped GaAs crystal were investigated in the 90° angle infrared light scattering configuration. The scattering is Rayleigh scattering from scatterers which are always associated with the dislocations, and they are classified into three types,S, L _A , andL _G scatterers, according to their polarization characteristics. TheS, L _A , andL _G -scatterers are thought to be small As clusters, large As precipitates and large Ga precipitates, respectively.     

Ramanujan type congruences for the Klingen-Eisenstein series

In the case of Siegel modular forms of degree \(n\) , we prove that, for almost all prime ideals \(\mathfrak {p}\) in any ring of algebraic integers, mod \(\mathfrak {p}^m\) cusp forms are congruent to true cusp forms of the same weight. As an application we give congruences for the Klingen-Eisenstein series and cusp forms, which can be regarded as a generalization of Ramanujan’s congruence. We will conclude by giving numerical examples.     

Response of liver to glucocorticoid is altered by administration of shosaikoto (kampo medicine)

The effects of Shosaikoto, one of the Kampo medicines used for therapy for chronic hepatitis, on liver functions were studied in mice. Oral administration of Shosaikoto for 5 d enhanced the well-known induction of tyrosine aminotransferase (TAT) activity by dexamethasone. Further, TAT activity in mice treated with Shosaikoto was induced effectively by a smaller dose of dexamethasone, as compared with that in control mice. However, Shosaikoto itself did not induce TAT activity in the liver on oral administration or in cultured hepatocytes by direct addition. Moreover, Shosaikoto did not affect the induction of TAT activity by butyryl-adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate. The amplifying effect of Shosaikoto seemed to be specific for induction by dexamethasone. These data suggest that Shosaikoto makes the liver sensitive to glucocorticoid by some unknown mechanism.
