Polymer morphology and gas transport properties in relation to their chemical structure

The morphology, supramolecular structure, and gas transport properties of thin membranes of polymers with different chemical structure are studied. The relationship between the supramolecular structure of the polymers and their morphology and gas transport properties is revealed. The polymers studied represent low-permeability materials and exhibit a high degree of selectivity for different gas pairs.     

Composition of heteroassociates formed in a binary liquid system HF-Et<Subscript>2</Subscript>O

IR spectra and densities of solutions in a binary liquid system (BLS) HF-Et₂O were measured for the first time for the molar ratios of the components ranging from 1: 12 to 14: 1 and 31: 1, respectively. An analysis of the concentration dependences of the normalized (to the total number of moles of the BLS components in 1 L) absorbance and excess density of the studied solutions revealed that they contained heteroassociates with stoichiometric ratios of the molecules of 1: 2, 2: 1, 4: 1, and 11–12: 1. The concentration range in which each associate is formed in the binary mixture HF-Et₂O was estimated for all the associates. The results obtained were compared with the data on the HF: Solv ratios (Solv is solvent) in molecular complexes that prevail in the seven BLS HF-organic solvent studied earlier. Selective formation of C60F18(g) and C60F36(g) by reaction of [60]fullerene with molecular fluorine

Fluorination of C₆₀(s), C₆₀(s)-MnF₂(s), C₆₀(s)-NiF₂(s) and C₆₀(s)-MnF₃(s) mixtures has been studied by Knudsen cell mass spectrometry with admission of molecular fluorine. The fluorination is selective when fullerene reacts with the fluorine chemisorbed on the MnF₂ surface. When the MnF₂ content in the initial mixture is at least 90 mol% both C₆₀F₁₈ and C₆₀F₃₆ are selectively formed. Under certain conditions, mixtures predominantly containing one of three compounds C₆₀F₃₈, C₆₀F₄₀, and C₆₀F₄₂ can be obtained. A consecutive change of the main fluorination products (C₆₀F₁₈ and C₆₀F₃₆) takes place at constant temperature (720 K) and on fluorine admission. A quantitative explanation of this fact is given. Selective fluorination of C₆₀(s) by molecular fluorine is compared with solid-phase fluorination using MnF₃(s) as a fluorinating agent.     

Gallium alkoxides: Synthesis and properties

Compounds Ga(OR)₃ (R = Me, Et, Prⁱ, Buⁿ, C₂H₄OMe) were synthesized by exchange reactions between gallium chloride and alkali metal alkoxides, the reetherefication of Ga(OPrⁱ)₃ and Ga(OC₂H₄OMe)₃ by other ROH (R = Me, Et), and anodic dissolution of metallic gallium in the presence of a electroconductive additive (LiCl, Bu₄NBr). When solid GaCl₃ is introduced into an alcoholic solution of NaOEt, stable soluble gallium oxoalkoxyhalides are formed. The same reaction with a GaCl₃ solution in toluene or electrochemical synthesis produces nonvolatile Ga(OEt)₃ samples, which have the polymer zigzag configuration [Ga(OR)_4/2(OR)]_∞. Mass spectrometry shows that only Ga(OPrⁱ)₃ and freshly prepared X-ray amorphous Ga(OEt)₃ samples (produced by reetherefication) are transferred to the gas phase. The spectra of the latter contain ions generated by penta-and hexanuclear oxoalkoxide molecules, along with fragments of orthospecies [Ga(OEt)₃]_2?4. IR spectra are described for all compounds synthesized.     

Novel method of synthesis of C60F48 with improved yield and selectivity

A novel two-stage method of preparation of C₆₀F₄₈ with 96% purity and 80% yield is reported. A C₆₀ embedded into a MnF₂ matrix is reacted with molecular fluorine under dynamic conditions, i.e. in flow of fluorine gas and with sublimation of volatile products, which results in formation of C₆₀F₃₄-C₆₀F₃₈ mixtures with >90% yield. Subsequent fluorination of the mixture thus obtained in the closed reactor at elevated pressure directly leads to the final product. C₆₀F₄₈ thus synthesized has been characterized by means of EI-MS, MALDI-MS, IR-spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The problems of fullerene burning and degradation in the fluorine atmosphere are discussed.

Mechanical and thermal properties of modified bismaleimide matrices toughened by polyetherimides and polyimide

Thermal and mechanical properties such as G_IC (critical strain energy release rate), K_IC (critical stress intensity factor), tensile, and flexural strength of bismaleimide (BMI) matrix toughened by commercially available polyetherimides (Ultem 1000P, Siltem STM 1700, and Extem VH1003) and polyimide P84 were investigated. In case of various contents, polyetherimides soluble in BMI phase separation was observed. The influence of the toughener amount on the mechanical properties of the matrices was studied. It was shown that Ultem and Siltem had a more significant influence on the G_IC and K_IC parameters than the more thermally stable P84 and Extem. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Determination of polyaromatic hydrocarbons in coal tar pitch

Different techniques for extracting polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from coal tar pitch for their quantitative determination by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry are compared. It has been found that the ultrasonic treatment of a sample allowed the quantitative extraction of PAHs from coal tar pitch. The results of the quantitative determination of PAHs in samples of coal tar pitch obtained by Soxhlet extraction and liquid-liquid extraction with ultrasonic treatment agree within the experimental error range.
