Electronic and geometric properties of alkali-C60 molecules

First-principle electronic structure calculations are carried out for M_xC ₆₀ ^q , where M = Li, Na, K and ( x , q ) = (1, 0),(1,±1),(2, 0),(3, - 1),(6, 0),(6, - 1),(12, 0) using the local density functional. The electric dipole moment for MC₆₀ agrees with the experimental results. The calculated Mulliken charge indicates that the bonding of the alkali atom with C₆₀ is mostly ionic except for lithium. The alkali atom prefers to make many bonds with the carbon atoms rather than a single bond with the neighbor carbon atom. The calculated adsorption energy suggest that the metal-metal bonding of sodiums and potassiums on C₆₀ arises for more than the six valence electrons in the alkali atoms. The lithium-lithium bond is, on the other hand, not appeared for x ? 12. The difference in the most stable geometry between lithiums and the other alkali atoms on C₆₀ comes from the covalent character of the lithium-carbon bond.     

Endoscopic Observation of Tissue by Narrowband Illumination

We propose a new illumination method for a medical endoscope: narrow band imaging (NBI), in which the spectral bandwidth of the filtered light is narrowed. To confirm how the spectral specifications of the filtered light influence a reproduced image, an experiment was conducted observing the endoscopic images of the back mucosa of a human tongue. In addition, the effect of NBI on endoscopic images was investigated through preliminary clinical tests in colonoscopy and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. It has been shown that NBI can enhance the capillary pattern and the crypt pattern on the mucosa. These patterns are useful features for diagnosing an early cancer.     

Re-entrant phase transitions of the Blume-Emery-Griffiths model

We have investigated the spin-1 Ising model on the simple cubic lattice with bilinear, biquadratic interaction and anisotropic energy (BEG model). We have been specially interested in the case of antiferro biquadratic interaction, because the interaction will cause the competition with bilinear interaction and anisotropy. A two-sublattice ordering, so called the staggered quadrupole (SQ) phase, occurs as long as biquadratic interaction is negative large enough. We have obtained a full phase diagram in the whole interaction parameter space (for the positive bilinear interaction) by the Bethe approximation, and found several kinds of phase transitions, such as successive, re-entrant and double re-entrant transitions. These transitions are also confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations on simple cubic lattices.     

Strained silacycle-catalyzed asymmetric Diels-Alder cycloadditions: the first highly enantioselective silicon Lewis acid catalyst

The first highly enantioselective silicon Lewis acid catalyst for an asymmetric organic transformation has been developed. The catalyst derives its activity from the strain induced in the silicon center by virtue of being constrained in a five-membered ring. A simple tridentate ligand has been developed and the derived chlorosilane complex catalyzes the Diels-Alder cycloaddition of methacrolein and cyclopentadiene with 94% ee.     

Establishment of hybrid-derived offspring populations in the Ohomopterus ground beetles through unidirectional hybridization

An approach to deduce the mechanism of stabilization of the hybrid-derived populations in the Ohomopterus ground beetles has been made by comparative studies on the phylogenetic trees of the mitochondrial and nuclear DNA. A phylogenetic tree based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) of nuclear ribosomal gene roughly reflects the relations of morphological species group, while mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 5 (ND5) gene shows a considerable different topology on the tree; there exist several geographically-linked lineages, most of which consist of more than one species. These results suggest that the replacement of mitochondria has occurred widely in the Ohomopterus species. In most cases, hybridization is unidirectional, i.e., the species A (♂) hybridized with another species B (♀) and not vice versa, with accompanied replacement of mitochondria of A by those of B. The results also suggest that partial or complete occupation of the distribution territory by a hybrid-derived morphological species. The morphological appearance of the resultant hybrid-derivatives are recognized as that of the original species A. Emergence of a morphological new species from a hybrid-derived population has been exemplified.
