Improved coating method for uniform polymer layer in infrared hollow fiber

An improved coating method was proposed in order to form a uniform polymer layer in the fabrication of cyclic olefin polymer-coated silver (COP/Ag) hollow fiber. A COP solution was flowed in a closed loop, in which the silver-coated tube was used as a part of the loop. Owing to the constant flowing speed of the COP solution and the airtight flowing environment, a COP layer was uniformly formed. The hollow fibers attain high performance and deliver multi-wavelength laser light from the infrared to the visible simultaneously. The method was successfully applied to the fabrication of practical hollow fibers with 2 m length for the near and mid-infrared lasers.

Effects of Roxadustat on Erythropoietin Production in the Rat Body

Anemia is a major complication of chronic renal failure. To treat this anemia, prolylhydroxylase domain enzyme (PHD) inhibitors as well as erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) have been used. Although PHD inhibitors rapidly stimulate erythropoietin (Epo) production, the precise sites of Epo production following the administration of these drugs have not been identified. We developed a novel method for the detection of the Epo protein that employs deglycosylation-coupled Western blotting. With protein deglycosylation, tissue Epo contents can be quantified over an extremely wide range. Using this method, we examined the effects of the PHD inhibitor, Roxadustat (ROX), and severe hypoxia on Epo production in various tissues in rats. We observed that ROX increased Epo mRNA expression in both the kidneys and liver. However, Epo protein was detected in the kidneys but not in the liver. Epo protein was also detected in the salivary glands, spleen, epididymis and ovaries. However, both PHD inhibitors (ROX) and severe hypoxia increased the Epo protein abundance only in the kidneys. These data show that, while Epo is produced in many tissues, PHD inhibitors as well as severe hypoxia regulate Epo production only in the kidneys.     

Optical testing of star sensor (II): Alignment of star sensor from off-line pictures taken in orbital test

Alignment error of an image sensor relative to the optical axis of a star sensor head and alignment errors between four heads were calculated from pictures taken in an orbital experiment. When comparing the image sensor alignment parameters in the orbital test and a ground test, both values matched well. By determining the relative relationship of the four heads using four pictures taken at the same moment in orbit and uploading the parameters to the star sensor system in orbit, the estimated attitude error was improved from 0.29 to 0.17°, though the accuracy was limited by the ±0.2° determination accuracy of the satellite itself. We estimated the attitude determination accuracy from separation angles between boresights of the four heads, calculated from pattern matching between downloaded pictures and a star catalogue. The estimated accuracy, in terms of potential optical performance, was 0.60 arcmin at 3σ, which is sufficient to satisfy the specification of 1 arcmin.     

Asymmetric Ni(II)/Cr(II)-mediated coupling reaction: stoichiometric process

[reaction: see text] Via an X-ray analysis, the sulfonamide bearing R(1) = i-Pr, R(2) = Me, and R(3) = Me is shown to be a tridentate ligand to a Cr(III) salt. This class of ligands, represented by R(1) = t-Bu, R(2) = 2-naphthyl, and R(3) = Me, is effective to achieve an asymmetric Ni/Cr-mediated coupling reaction and, with the C14-C38 segment of halichondrins, its synthetic potential has been demonstrated. A possible mechanism is suggested for the process.     

Optimal design for hollow fiber inner-coated by dielectric layers with surface roughness

We report the optimal design for hollow fiber inner-coated with metallic and multidielectric layers by using ray-optics theory. Transmission characteristics of the multilayer hollow fiber are more dependent on the film surface roughness in the IR region. Comparisons of fibers with smooth and rough films are made and discussed in detail. The optimal design for film thickness, inner radius, and the number of layers and refractive indices is presented. The calculation results are important for structure design, material selection, and fabrication when considering imperfections in film-coating techniques. Multilayer fibers are fabricated based on the calculation and experimental results agree with the theoretical ones.     

Tandem conjugate additions and 3-aza-Cope rearrangements of tertiary allyl amines and cyclic alpha-vinylamines with acetylenic sulfones. Applications to simple and iterative ring expansions leading to medium and large-ring nitrogen heterocycles

Tertiary acyclic allyl amines and tertiary cyclic alpha-vinyl amines undergo conjugate additions to acetylenic sulfones to produce zwitterion intermediates, followed by 3-aza-Cope rearrangements. In the case of cyclic alpha-vinyl amines, the process results in ring-expansion, providing a novel route to 9- to 17-membered cyclic amines. The Hammett plot for the reaction of 8b with 2a- 2f shows rho = +1.19, which is consistent with formation of the proposed zwitterion in the rate-determining step, where electron-withdrawing substituents on the arylsulfonyl moiety stabilize the negative charge and enhance the rate of the reaction. Alternative pathways were observed in methanol in the case of 11, where a methoxy substituent promotes a dissociative mechanism of the corresponding zwitterion via a stabilized allyl cation, whereas the zwitterion derived from amine 12 undergoes ring-opening by direct attack of methanol upon the strained aziridinium moiety instead of by rearrangement. An iterative process was developed, where the product of one ring-expansion is converted into a new cyclic alpha-vinyl amine, followed by a repetition of the conjugate addition and [3,3] rearrangement. This protocol was illustrated by its application to the synthesis of motuporamine A and B.     

A modified method using static head-space gas chromatography for determining the stability constants of 1-alkanol/alpha-cyclodextrin complexation

A modification of the conventional static head-space gas chromatography method (SHSGC method) to determine stability constants for 1-alkanol/alpha-CD inclusion complexes was investigated. The 1 : 1 stability constants determined by this modified SHSGC method are in reasonable agreement with the corresponding values reported previously. The modified SHSGC method precludes the necessity of the calibration curve by the use of Henry's law constant of guest. Consequently, the modified SHSGC method is more advantageous than the conventional SHSGC method because the experimental time required for determination of the stability constant is markedly reduced.     

Optical properties of AgI/Ag infrared hollow fiber in the visible wavelength region

We report on AgI/Ag infrared hollow fiber with low-loss in visible region. Improved methods of silver plating and iodination were proposed to fabricate the hollow fiber. The surface roughness of the silver layer and the silver iodide layer was reduced by the pretreatment with an SnCl2 solution and low iodination temperature. Losses for the Er:YAG and green laser light were 0.4 and 7dB/m. The loss property of green laser beam was low to deliver a pilot beam for the invisible infrared laser light. Owing to the smooth and uniform AgI film, the loss spectrum of the hollow fiber showed clear interference peaks in the visible region. An empirical formula for AgI material dispersion was derived, which is of special importance for the design of high-performance AgI/Ag hollow fiber.     

Stability Constants for 1:1 Complexes Formed between2-hydroxypropyl-β-Cyclodextrin with an Average Substitution Degree of 4.4 and Benzene and Alkylbenzenes as Guests by Modified Static Head-Space Gas Chromatography Method

Modified static head-space gas chromatography method (M-SHSGC method) was used to determine the stability constants of benzene and alkylbenzenes with 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes. The 1:1 stability constants were in agreement with those obtained by conventional SHSGC method. The M-SHSGC method precludes the necessity of the calibration curve by the use of Henry’s law constant of guest. Consequently, it is more advantageous than conventional SHSGC method because the time required to determine the stability constant is markedly reduced.
